Don’t mis-gender me

At work today, having and diversity chat and I got called a cis woman. Thanks to mumsnet I said ‘I reject that term, don’t mis-gender me’. Went down like a lead balloon especially when I followed up with ‘I’m not a sub-set of women, I am a woman, an adult female human’.
Thanks for giving me the confidence to hold my ground.

Could someone please explain this thread to me? No joke. I'm actually confused.

Good for you!! ✊

Brilliant! Fantastic work. Star I hope there aren’t any repercussions, though.

I hate the cis thing. Why does someone else get to chose what I am called?

Susanna30 · 17/04/2019 21:50

What is a cis woman?
I get so confused with all this terminology.
I am female (genetically) so am I cis?

Victoriapestis01 · 17/04/2019 22:18

Yes susanna , and as such you are part of the boring subset of women, those who actually are women.

I believe the use of the term is prohibited here, for the good reason that it is thoroughly silly and insulting.

Morecookies many women find cis (short for cisgender) offensive and do not accept that label for a variety of reasons.

Some people view “cis” as a neutral descriptor and are happy to use it or have it applied to them.

OP is in the first category (me too) Smile

2BthatUnnoticed · 17/04/2019 22:28

Susanna if people want to identify themselves as cis, that is fine in my view.

It is imposing the label on other people, without their consent, that is wrong.

Haven’t men always dictated how women are defined?
