That's Facebook etc done for. DD and her entire Yr 6 class added years to their ages to sign up so they could befriend each other before leaving for secondary school. (I insisted that she used my, rather than her, email till she turned 13 so more false information.) If there were concerns about people giving false details to websites, surely sites serving children, jihadis, or paedophiles, to give just three examples, would be higher priority that a site for mums. Or are mums that dangerous!

GCAcademic · 09/04/2019 10:38

Thank you Zebras.

I've just read the "Monkey Dance" article that @JessicaWakefieldSV linked to above:

donawheeler.wordpress.com/2015/09/17/ignoring-the-narcissist-how-to-spot-the-monkey-dance/

I agree with others who have suggested that these sideshows are being put on to try to distract attention from the main events of the day.

Very amusing, all the same Grin

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 09/04/2019 10:48

I may be reading that wrong, but is Hayden claiming that if MN think someone signed up with a throwaway email and fake name, and they allowed the person to post, they are in a lot of trouble? Whats the 'website operator' defense? Surely a lot of people don't use their real details signing up to forums.

Very odd behaviour from Steph. But not surprising.

AbsintheFriends · 09/04/2019 10:49

I can't get my head around the daftness of it. A person (SH) going nuclear about an internet poster using SH's real name, and frothing with outrage that, whilst doing so, the internet user did not use their own real name.

It seems that SH is a great stickler for total transparency in everyone else, but demands to reinvent themselves and entirely erase their own past at every verse end.

If you're reading Steph (of course you are!) may I suggest that you might find it more useful to train as a stage hypnotist than a 'lawyer'? ('look in the eyes, not around the eyes...')

No, afaik MN won't be in any trouble. Mumsnet allow us to be anonymous - they are an anonymous chat forum. They allow name-changing for that reason.

They have the ability to remove any defamatory posts - and they've abided by the protocol that Michael laid out upthread.

Steph is all hot air.

ZebrasAreBras · 09/04/2019 10:59

Is it difficult to set up a VPN?

No I don't think so. Google protonmail.com and proton vpn.

But nobody should really worry - MNHQ will contest a court order if you ask them too.

They can also just remove the posts with your permission - and I think that ends any potential defamation case. (Happy to be corrected by anyone more legally qualified!)

Steph is just throwing Steph's weight around.

pancaketosser · 09/04/2019 11:00

I finally read the monkey dance article GrinGrin

Laughed out loud at throwing faeces.

Now I've got Cabin Pressure in my head - "fizz buzz 'ave a banana!"

That’s the bit that tickles me, too. Steph’s desired outcome is presumably to stop people making the connection between Steph s current name and Steph’s alleged previous name, so why in the name of all that’s holy would you do that by making a huuuuuuge song and dance about how people using aliases are up to no good and have to be stopped 🤣

It’s priceless.

Thanks for the explanation, Michaelmumsnet. I can only imagine what Steph is up to behind the scenes. Sheesh.

Penguincake · 09/04/2019 11:12

Has anyone told reddit that they are not allowed to have users with false email addresses? I am sure they will shut down immediately when they know. Steph contact them ASAP. Your stunning legal insights are invaluable.

buzzbobbly · 09/04/2019 11:13

XXcstatic if I am called Jane Smith, I have to have an email address of [email protected]

Ooh, now wondering if XX is double bluffing us and really IS called Jane Smith. Perhaps I should get a court order to reveal this.

It's a mystery and no mistake.

thirdfiddle · 09/04/2019 11:14

They'd have to prove some defamation actually took place wouldn't they? Strongly suspect MN think not or they'd have deleted by now given their strict moderation on gender related matters. Though I would understand if MN or the original poster CBA and just let the posts go. The information is in the public domain, which means defamation unlikely to stick afaik, but also means no great need to fight to keep the posts if it's a nuisance. Just my view.

Question for @MNHQ:

If you receive one of these court orders that ultimately ends up with you providing the info, do you provide the info as a snapshot of what is currently on your system for that user on that day?

Or do you provide the whole historical list of usernames, email addresses and any other personal info people may have added, changed or deleted over time?

JessicaWakefieldSV · 09/04/2019 11:23

They don’t just have to prove defamation, but serious harm was caused. In order for that to be proven, they’d have to have a reputation to damage. Stalking MN & then claiming harassment because a few women say things you don’t like about your actual real past, is the kind of thing a judge would throw out. Remember, they’ve already tried to go after Glinner and dropped their case. Why do you think they did that? After making the case so well known that quite a few people, globally, now know they’re trans and their previous names.

BadPennyNoBiscuit · 09/04/2019 11:25

Is it difficult to set up a VPN?

Opera web browser has a built in VPN which you can activate for free.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 09/04/2019 11:25

buzzbobbly You should de register and start all over again, rather than changing emails or usernames.

VeniceAllan · 09/04/2019 11:29

Changing your name, re-registering, using a vpn... this is what these creeps want... to scare women. We're not doing anything wrong and need to stand up to bullies not fear them.

BreakWindandFire · 09/04/2019 11:33

Why are Caroline Hirons and Sali Hughes cheering these men on?

A couple of years ago someone went on the beauty pages here and accused Sali of taking money for product endorsements - something she has never done. She had to come on and defend herself as Mumsnet HQ were pretty tardy in taking the defamatory allegations down.

XXcstatic · 09/04/2019 11:37

Curses.

DancingRaven · 09/04/2019 11:39

For someone so fond of the law, it is extraordinary to what lengths they are going to to hide their punishments for breaking the law.
