Man pleads guilty to the murder of Poppy Devey Waterhouse

Poppy was just 24 and found murdered in the Leeds flat she shared with Joe Atkinson, last December. She was found with stab wounds to her head and neck. Mr Atkinson has previously pleaded not guilty, but has now changed his plea. At least her family is spared a long trial.

I don’t want any woman’s murder to go by unnoticed. Poppy worked as a betting analyst and had a bachelors degree in mathematics. She was born in London. This is truly heartbreaking.

Name the problem: male violence

RIP Poppy.

Just 24, so young to be on the end of such horrible violence. I don’t see many tweets about this. Poor young woman. My heart goes out to her family Flowers

Clicky link.

What a horrific waste of life.

Male violence against women is so commonplace, so many cases, it hardly seems people consider it noteworthy Sad

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 05/04/2019 17:37

It's awful. I'm so sorry for Poppy's family.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 05/04/2019 17:38

So many women being murdered by their partners. Awful.

Sexnotgender · 05/04/2019 17:40

Awful, poor woman, her family must be devastated.

More male violence.

Ifonlyus · 05/04/2019 18:10

I saw this earlier only because I was looking for something else on the BBC news page. I hadn't heard about it in the news. I was rather disgusted to read the details and then see the BBC had added this:

"Police previously described it as a "domestic-related incident"

StealthPolarBear · 05/04/2019 18:13

Awful. Another one to add to the statistic

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 05/04/2019 18:14

Police previously described it as a "domestic-related incident"

Isn’t that awful how they do that? I believe homicide stats don’t include those murdered in a ‘domestic incident’.

They were both basically still kids and one of them is now a murderer and the other is dead. It’s horrificly sad.

Male violence
Male violence
Male violence

Messyisthenewtidy · 05/04/2019 18:22

“A domestic related incident”. Nothing to see here.

Barracker · 05/04/2019 18:24

Awful. Poor Poppy.

God, I wish I could obliterate the word 'domestic' from every crime report ever.

Male Violence.

MilletSentToForceIt · 05/04/2019 18:59

💐💐for Poppy and family.

jamrollyolly · 05/04/2019 19:05

Good grief Jessica, domestic incidents aren't recorded as homicide? That is unbelievable.

Actually as I sit here thinking about what I've been learning on these boards it becomes chillingly believable. What is it is outrageous.

I bet it's homicide if it's a man that dies.

RIP Poppy.

StealthPolarBear · 05/04/2019 19:07

In the crime stats? I find that hard to believe

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 05/04/2019 19:29

I probably didn’t phrase that right. You often see written the difference in homicide stats between males and females, I’ll find exact stats in a bit, and it shows men are far more likely to be the victim of homicide. But when they add DV murders the gap between the sexes is a lot closer. I’ll find an example of what I mean. Sorry, menopause fog has me not phrasing or explaining it well. I actually first learnt that here.

I wish I had saved the thread I saw it on now! about to jump into a sauna. I think it was about how media report it. Government have overall figures plus DV figures as separate, where as we know women are more likely to be victims. Men are more likely to be victims of homicide by unknown persons.

I'm naming it for what it is: Male violence.

Police everywhere: get on the fucking ball. Domestic incident is violence. No domestic about it. Stop letting women in danger down.

PS There is no such thing as menopause fog. Our brains are not ruled by our ovaries.

ZebrasAreBras · 05/04/2019 20:23

I know that Karen Ingala Smith started collecting the data on domestic violence against women, and male violence against women, because the government specifically don't record them. Or have no way of differentiating the sex of dv victims (overwhelmingly women).

Counting Dead Women

It's her list that Jess Philips reads out in the House of Commons every year on International Women's Day.

Today I read an article, one of many, about this Fijian rugby player in NZ who is doing soooo great now, less than a year after his ‘off field incident’ as they continually refer to it. He chased and dragged his girlfriend along the ground and beat her. That’s called an ‘ off field incident’ in New Zealand. He got off conviction.

Domestic incident.
Off field incident.

What the actual fuck.

And does anyone blame a Male forum for any of this? As Mumsnet is being blamed for school violence today? Of course fucking not.
