New attempt to ban FGM in Kentucky, USA

FGM is not banned in the US, since a federal ruling was overturned as unconstitutional;

''The judge said... If there is an interstate market for FGM, why is this the first time the government has ever brought charges under this 1996 statute?”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have estimated at least 513,000 U.S. women and girls are at risk of FGM or have already been subjected to the procedure. Of those, more than 118,000 who are at risk live in the 23 U.S. states without legislation against FGM, according to the CDC. ''

23 states permit FGM. If it is to be banned, it has to be done state by state. A FGM victim from a strict Christian community in Kentucky is trying to get FGM banned in her state.

FGM is a human rights violation.

It's amazing that Jennifer's parents could distinguish their XX child from an XY for the purposes of genital mutilation. If only Jennifer had thought to identify as a transman, I'm sure that would have halted them in their tracks. /s, very dark s

Women and girls suffer around the world because of our female bodies. Wishing success, support and strength to brave Jennifer in her efforts to get this evil banned.

In the US we:

  • are beginning to hold high a child's right to consent to alter their bodies because children are capable of making life-altering irreversible decisions.
  • in some states we ignore a child's rights to dissent from FGM, children are not capable of dissent from a life-altering irreversible decision. Furthermore aren't afforded protection from HR violation.
  • allow child marriage in most states (as early as 12yr old in Massachusetts). Children are not capable to consent to a life altering and possibly irreversible decision. Side note - almost every state boys age of consent is 1-2yrs older.
  • do not allow girls under the age of 18yr old to access abortion without parental consent because children are not capable of making a life altering and irreversible decision.

My logical brain has a real problem parsing out all of these conflicting perspectives on child exposure. All of these issues have very easy solutions WTF are we doing here?
