Plans for "radical" trans health service model to be rolled out across England

A “radical” new model for trans health services – run by trans people and offering hormones, surgery referrals and non-medical support – is to be trialled in Greater Manchester. NHS England then plan to roll this model out across the country in order to meet the increasing demands from more and more people identifying as transgender. The service will initially deal with people currently on waiting lists but the plan is to then allow new GP referrals and, when fully operational, for people aged 17 and over to be able to self-refer themselves without going through a GP:

Fuck, that's insane. Is no one listening?

TheCatsServant · 02/04/2019 20:37

OMFG! Are they completely deluded? All this without ANY well conducted large scientific studies, published in high quality peer-reviewed medical journals. The £££ litigation the NHS will be up against a few years down the line will finish it.

The reckless stupidity (and dangerousness) of it all is staggering

RedToothBrush · 02/04/2019 20:40

Isn't this like getting hooked on heroine but with hormones?

Only NHS supervised.

Nuts. Utterly nuts.

plattercake · 02/04/2019 20:45

Well well, here's more of the stuff that was hiding in the pipeline eh? Last year's consultation was supposed to go by quietly so all this harmful ideology could just be rubber stamped and cheques signed

I can't open the PDF, but the NHS page says

The day will be split into two sessions, the first session in the morning will be for potential users to hear ideas around the new service and to shape the important questions to bidding organisations.

The afternoon session will provide an opportunity for potential service users to meet the organisations who have expressed an interest in delivering the new service. This will allow them to hear first hand of what is important to people and allow these providers to discuss how they might see the service working. (my emphasis)

Amongst other Qs, who are these organisations? Why are they not specialist services from within the NHS (not that the Tavistock is anything to be proud of.. but I am even more concerned about private organisations, and the money they will make out of it.

I am in total support of trans people getting quality care but frankly, think this needs to be MH care. No money for this though it seems.

And 17? FFS and with no need for a GP to know or refer?

stillathing · 02/04/2019 20:45

Women should totally copy this idea and start sexual health services and refuges for women run by women! Oh, wait....

EmpressLesbianInChair · 02/04/2019 20:48

Wasn’t this in the Action for Trans Health manifesto?

Imnobody4 · 02/04/2019 20:56

I just want to cry. Does no one learn from history. Undemocratic, 'charitable' organisations being given unfettered powers without any real controls. This is getting like Ireland putting the Catholic Church in charge of public services.

ChattyLion · 02/04/2019 21:04

This is really bad. Just had a quick scan but I don’t think health services of this high level of risk and permanence should be being delivered outside of very very specialist care.

And since when were health services best delivered by patients- this document suggests services should be staffed by trans identifying people.

I’m sorry but that is really inappropriate. Once again let’s look at how other forms of mental distress or body dysmorphia are clinically managed in the NHS.

Why is are trans patients being treated as though normal safeguarding, specialist clinical expertise, standard medical ethics, and normal clinical protocols do not apply to them? We should all be very worried by this.

Dinneratbreadsticks · 02/04/2019 21:08

So is being trans a mental health or physical health condition? Because I thought I saw a clip of Theresa May being applauded for saying it wasn't.

CottonDuvet · 02/04/2019 21:09

Thanks for posting that link OP.

There was a good point in there - which is the current NHS pathway leads almost inevitably to medical transition, and that trans people feel under pressure to medically transition.

If a new service could genuinely support gender non conforming people to live their lives confidently without taking risks with irreversible interventions then that is s good thing.

That's me sounding more optimistic that I should...

PerspicaciaTick · 02/04/2019 21:10

A nice new, fat income stream for Mermaids.

ChattyLion · 02/04/2019 21:11

Also is that Manchester foundation mentioned at the top of the document linked to that group who posts out binders to underage girls..?

StephsCaddy · 02/04/2019 21:12

Sounds expensive

RepealTheGRA · 02/04/2019 21:16

Has the ATH’s batshit manifesto actually been put into practice? JFC Shock

OvaHere · 02/04/2019 21:19

Has the ATH’s batshit manifesto actually been put into practice?

Does this mean we can look forward to the immediate release of all trans prisoners and all trans surgery carried out by trans people?

Thingybob · 02/04/2019 21:25

From the pdf, "Many people accessing the service do not always require medical intervention"

I don't get it, what do trans people want from this service?

RepealTheGRA · 02/04/2019 21:26

Does this mean we can look forward to the immediate release of all trans prisoners

Well we’re already not joining them so it’s the next logical step.

www.thesun.co.uk/news/8752617/transgender-thug-spared-jail-bottle-attack-uncomfortable-womens-prison/amp/

all trans surgery carried out by trans people

We don’t seem to give a crap about safeguards when it comes to trans people, especially children, so why not? Now that, THAT is transphobia that the powers that be do not give a crap about 17 year old CHILDREN’s safety the minute they say they’re trans. Sad

RepealTheGRA · 02/04/2019 21:27

*jailing

EweSurname · 02/04/2019 21:29

Wtf! This is shocking - how is this ok?

Especially bearing in mind this was published yesterday

Dinneratbreadsticks

On the video I just post here the paediatrician talking about 25 minutes in says that GID was originally declared to not be a mental disorder in an attempt to demedicalise it by reinforcing that it was socially induced not innate. The idea was to send the message that there was nothing wrong with the individual, and that it was societies attitude that was causing the problem. I haven't been able to find any additional sources yet to back that up but oh the irony if it's true.

AnyOldPrion · 02/04/2019 21:49

”OMFG! Are they completely deluded?”

Yes.

RepealTheGRA · 02/04/2019 21:59

The idea was to send the message that there was nothing wrong with the individual, and that it was societies attitude that was causing the problem

Tbf I agree with that. Doesn’t mean that people in distress shouldn’t be helped though - with therapy, not off label drugs!

SirVixofVixHall · 02/04/2019 22:09

“The local non binary population “ er...as EVERYONE IS NON BLOODY BINARY that will be an awful lot of service users eh ?
There is clearly a lot of money in this.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASavings · 02/04/2019 22:10

I agree with it too, I think that's exactly what we should be telling people. Your body is fine, your perfect as you are, it's society that's wrong. Here's some support to help you cope with reality and feel confident expressing yourself however you please. Which is why it's so ironic that instead we've now gone into a tail spin of hyper medicalised self diagnosis! Because talking therapy is conversion therapy obvs. Unlike telling lesbians they're actually straight men and sterilising them which is... oh wait

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASavings · 02/04/2019 22:11

My comment was to RepealTheGRA btw
