Look what I found in the school library...

NC for obvious reasons. Found this on display in the school library. It starts off promising, explaining about sex chromosomes and gender being socially defined and saying you can do whatever you want irrespective of your sex. And then you get this... It even includes a questionnaire to determine your gender! It conveniently doesn't mention surgery at all.

I don't know where I stand on the woke-GC spectrum, but I do find it problematic that this book states twaw/tmam, just without the ability to reproduce. I feel it's hugely misleading and potentially dangerous when aimed at vulnerable teens. I also have issues with cisgender. Is there any point addressing this at work? How do I do this in a way that will not impede my career?

The questions are weird, I know a girl who is a tom boy, wears boys clothes, plays typical boy games etc but is a girl. My brother wore dresses and loved make up and playing with dolls and he’s a straight male. My son is very camp and I won’t be surprised if he’s gay.
I just wonder if people are too quick to label children and if by trying to be inclusive they’re actually trying to force kids into a box and label them as something when it could just be personality types or a phase or exploring themselves and their sexuality. Which doesn’t answer your question at all sorry!

Unless it's mandatory reading material, I don't see how it could be an issue. Let teens make up their own minds.

FermatsTheorem · 02/04/2019 17:51

Oh it's Juno Dawson.

Suggest you follow the clicky link there about 3 lines down to see all of Dawson's works, including those published under previous name.

Has made some eye-wateringly homophobic tweets, IIRC. I think Dawson does not have an entirely happy relationship with their sexuality.

But shouldn't they be doing that based on facts? Also not entirely sure they will know what's best for them day to day school life would indicate not

FML, if gender is such an issue, then why change your body to make it align with your gender identity (whatever that is)? From the gender games blurb.

It was one of the books included in the Book Trust's 2018 book pack for secondary school libraries. The give away a free pack of books to schools that sign up.

I haven't put the copy sent to me on the shelf.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/04/2019 18:07

My sister put that in the Cupboard of Shame too!

jenthelibrarian · 02/04/2019 18:08

Do you have a professional librarian at school?

How and on whose authority was this book obtained? By this I mean did someone at school choose it, order it and pay for it or is it part of a packaged service from the local authority Schools Library Service or similar?

What would the school science teachers think about it?

Quick way to get it off the shelves: borrow it and don't give it back Grin

newtlover · 02/04/2019 18:25

what is your role in the school?

newtlover · 02/04/2019 18:29

if anyone has read the book, they can review it on the book trust ws

OldCrone · 02/04/2019 18:32

Juno Dawson was a self-hating gay man who transitioned because Juno is homophobic and needed to be a 'woman' so that Juno wasn't gay any more.

'A lot of gay men are gay men as a consolation prize, because they couldn't be women,' says Dawson, while apparently unaware that that forms the basis for the violent oppression of gay men in Iran

From the Independent article Fermat linked to.

Banning books is a step on the road to fascism so I say let people read what they want to read BUT that is a crappy book. That one page where they misuse quotes from feminist icons like Gloria Steinem and Annie Lennox to support the trans agenda is irritating. Feminists of that era supported the end of gender and a move towards a society that is less defined by gender roles, not one where liking pink things and dresses makes you a girl and liking soccer and climbing trees makes you a boy. That is pretty much the entire opposite of what second wave feminists like Gloria Steinem fought for.

teawamutu · 02/04/2019 18:39

Normally I'd never deface a book, but how about:borrow, annotate (or get someone else to), hand back?

SchrodingersUnicorn · 02/04/2019 18:46

What's the questionnaire to determine your gender? Can you add a photo?

Genderbenderatschool · 02/04/2019 19:38

Schrödinger, it's the middle pic. I'm not in again until Thursday, will take clearer pics then.

I would be asking the school what books about feminism and lesbian/gay issues they have on the shelves. This book is not science but opinion and any good school library should be balanced, presenting many views.

AnnaMagnani · 02/04/2019 19:45

Can you hide it on a shelf no-one will ever look at?

Maybe one under your desk?

Genderbenderatschool · 02/04/2019 20:55

Ha! Loving the creative ideas on here! I don't have my own classroom and the librarian is far too organised for me to borrow and lose it, she'd definitely notice!
