Single sex wards in mental health provision - whose needs hold the trump card? **Thread title edited at OP's request**

Just saw this thread on twitter and thought I'd post it as it's one to watch.

I feel concern wherever this young person is placed. I am quite clear that women should have single sex accommodation, especially within mental health provision.

I also recognise that this can present problems for some trans women. They deserve safe accommodation too.

Legally should be in the men’s. Though obviously needs to be accommodated as much as possible and kept away from the other men if needed for safety or distress reasons.

There are single SEX exemptions in the Equality Act, not single GENDER.

Whether she likes it or not she’s male.

The women in the women’s wards have rights.

I remember a woman on Twitter posting from the opposite side from that thread. She had been placed on a mental health ward (mixed sex dayroom but single sex areas including bedrooms) with a transwoman given a room in the female only area. The TRAs went to town on her.

I believe unless the patient has a GRC the hospital would face a breach.

Somewhere on MN is the poor poster who has posted several times before on such threads about being woken by the TW placed in her MH ward room overnight by them masturbating a few inches from her face. The TW only stopped when other patients intervened and physically removed them. The staff, faced with having to challenge or face up to the risk posed by the TW's behaviour, immediately discharged the woman when she stated she would not return to the room with the perpetrator. Perpetrator experienced no consequences at all.

Redshoeblueshoe · 02/04/2019 17:47

Well it's obvious. It's the woman with a penis.

FlippinFumin · 02/04/2019 17:54

What about the mental health and wellbeing of the women? What if they are victims of abuse by male bodied people. I notice they tweeted that their friend had no surgery or hormones or clothes or make up, but can still present as a woman. A man then. Fighting for access to vulnerable women. Bastard.

The female patients rights and needs should be paramount on a women's ward, just as they should be in women's refuges, prisons, changing rooms, sporting events, medical provision, etc etc.
I've bolded the operative words. If any men feel unsafe in male areas and facilities that should be adressed by making those areas safer, not by moving men into women's spaces.
Personally I would consider exceptions in the case of men who hold a GRC and full SRS, but only when there is no history or evidence of violence against women and children. Well, any violence really.

Things like this really chill me to the bone.

I was hospitalized on a psychiatric ward late last year after a suicide attempt. I was so vulnerable and sick and also as a survivor of rape and sexual trauma, I really do believe that one of the reasons I was able to recover as fast as I did was because there were no men on the ward. I know that if a male bodied person had been placed on the same ward then it would have brought back so many traumatic memories and there is no way I would have recovered so fast or even at all.

A transwoman's mental health and well being is not more important than my mental health nor that of any other woman.

BickerinBrattle · 02/04/2019 18:20

Before committing assault in a women's estate, didn't Karen White rape women on a women's psychiatric ward?

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 02/04/2019 18:29

Unfortunately I've seen transwomen on the female wards in our trust several times in recent years, I imagine speaking out about this from a staff point of view is tricky but I do know several nurses who have stuck their neck out advocating for their patients, many of whom have suffered abuse at the hands of men. They unfortunately don't get very far because as we know mens rights trump women's rights every time.

Its strange though, transmen never want to be treated on the male wards.

RepealTheGRA · 02/04/2019 18:46

There is legal provision to exclude GRC holders. Having a GRC is not going to prevent other vulnerable women from recognising them as male, some of whom are going to have a really visceral reaction to being locked up with a man.

RepealTheGRA · 02/04/2019 18:47

Before committing assault in a women's estate, didn't Karen White rape women on a women's psychiatric ward?

Yes. I hope the women are in the process of suing whoever enabled that to happen.

BickerinBrattle · 02/04/2019 19:06

Flowers to you, Queen

Knicknackpaddyflak · 02/04/2019 19:06

White committed the sex offences in a women's prison while there waiting to be tried for raping a woman in a MH ward White had self identified onto. The papers reported the woman so badly injured from the (repeated) rapes that she may never be able to carry a child.

And yet, while awaiting trial for this as a result of self ID, White was trotted into a prison full of new victims to carry on offending.

Third space. Totally respect that a TW may not feel safe or appropriately placed among men. They need to equally respect that for much the same reasons women need to feel equally safe and appropriately placed. Women are not validation props, or any less human.

feelingverylazytoday · 02/04/2019 19:09

BrickerlingBrattle he repeatedly raped a young woman with Aspergers syndrome. One can only imagine the pain fear and confusion that young woman went through, and no doubt still lives with.
My daughter is a vulnerable adult, if anything like this ever happens to her I will purposely hold responsible every beardy woke twat , every bluehaired handmaiden and all the rolypolyrat types that advocate for this.

BickerinBrattle · 02/04/2019 19:12

Yes. Women are not the dumping ground or the refuge for vulnerable males. All sorts of males are vulnerable for all sorts of reasons. Why should one set be privileged over another, regarding their access to women-only facilities, merely because they speak the shibboleth: I identify as a woman?

Gay males, nerdy males, short & weak males, BAME males, elderly males, disabled males -- all vulnerable. The problem for them lies with how males respond to vulnerable males, just as it does for males who say they identify as women, and that's a problem for males to sort out amongst themselves.

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 02/04/2019 19:16

TRA really need to concentrate their efforts into campaigning for their own wards and spaces.

It would be more productive than trying to eliminate women's rights and safety. And probably safer for them in the end, because they way they are pushing, the easiest solution for hospitals will be the removal of all sex segregation.

AncientLights · 02/04/2019 19:21

Very depressing to read all those woke replies and not a glimmer of recognition that women might not want this individual on their ward.

Same old shit.
