... of sending this little thug to a men's prison? I'm sure if they had been transitioning to a woman, a woman's jail would have been in the running.

Of course, Darren may have been at risk of sexual assualt in a men's prison. But then, women are at risk, as we have seen, of sexual assualt when transwomen are sent to join them. But the risk for Darren seems to have been seen as unacceptable, whereas ...

Darren would be hugely at risk in a men's prison but should have gone to a women's prison because Darren broke the law and should have been punished appropriately.

PrinceOfPies · 30/03/2019 11:33

I for one am glad "Darren" wasn't sent to a man's prison. It would be a breach of their human rights as we know exactly what would happen to him and it would basically be torture. But that person should be in a woman's prison. I wonder if ironically the judge was worried about the comfort of the women prisoners around that person? It would be nice if other judges considered their feelings before adding Karen White and the like to the prison.

*who the hell chooses the name Darren for themselves?

DpWm · 30/03/2019 11:52

Idk, Daily Mail...
They don't send all thugs to prison for all sorts of reasons. I'm sure being a transman wasn't much to do with it.
In the women's prison population there are a few trans men and so far none have been sent to a man's prison and rightly so.
Maybe now they have the trans wing for mtfs they can think about one for ftms.

Darren would be hugely at risk in a men's prison..

Like any vulnerable young man?

That's what people say isn't it - "you're too pretty to go to prison young man!" The subtext being, you will be sexually assaulted..

So yeah, that's a thing - prison is shit.

I wonder if thugs' legal representatives have started urging their clients to transition? Yet.

HorsewithnoBackstop · 30/03/2019 12:06

I may have got the wrong end of the stick.

Wouldn't be the first time.

PrinceOfPies · 30/03/2019 12:12

A woman will be far more at risk in a men's prison than a man will. No matter how pretty

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 30/03/2019 12:14

Horse Darren is biologically female so yes would be at particular risk in a male prison and particularly unable to defend themselves against any attack. I think prisons should be single sex and with facilities for trans prisoners. Had there been a trans prison, Darren could have gone there.

PrinceOfPies · 30/03/2019 12:23

I would expect raped to death to be an actual worry for a female in a men's prison. It doesnt bare thinking about.

donquixotedelamancha · 30/03/2019 12:23

Bloody confusing isn't it? The article only referred to him* as him and didn't explain what was going on.

Poor diddums can't go to prison because he would feel uncomfortable, but he can't be arsed to comply with his* community punishment.

The piece did say this person was 'transitioning from woman', donquixote.

I thought this (my italics) implied the judge was considering the impact on women prisoners on having a masculinised female in with them

': 'Because of what I am told is the position of you recently complying and the fact that you would go to a female prison, which would not be comfortable for you or somebody else there, on this occasion I am going to do what probation asks. '
'

Very true, but this is MN, you are breaking the rules if you read the OP, thread and links carefully :-)

I agree that women should be protected, but I don't think that should stop someone going to prison if they refuse to comply with the courts.

People are blaming the judge, but really it's an indictment of the prison service that they don't have facilities he feels are appropriate.

I knew I'd fit in here.

StopThePlanet · 30/03/2019 16:21

The description of this ftm individual includes "transgender thug" (their behavior is horrific so thug may apply), but my question is... In the reporting of mtf trans sexual perpetrators why have I not encountered a similar descriptor?

It appears that the dogma dictates that mtf are courageous regardless of offenses and ftm are not.

Granted, sentencing for trans offenders (compared to non trans) appears to be more lax and accommodating as a rule. Yet language regarding offenders appears to further demonize ftm (female as the important indicator) - misogyny is pervasive even regarding offenders.

StopThePlanet · 30/03/2019 16:24

Damn autocorrect! I meant transgender offenders not transsexual as I know there is a divide between the two (in many cases).

NotAJellyBaby · 30/03/2019 19:40

Unfortunately it's going to be the FtM who suffer most when this all collapses in on itself. It won't be common sense that routes it out, it'll be misogyny. The press may go easy on MtF prisoners/ offenders/ general assholes, and the general public may give them a free pass too because (shockingly) most people will still treat them according to the M in MtF. But it'll only take few FtM to step out of line and the wrath of god will fall on the movement with the FtM bearing the brunt of it. Misogyny is driving this forward and I'm afraid that misogyny will have to be what ends it. No matter which side "wins" it will still come at the expense of women.
