Some weekend flowers, cake and wine for Mumsnet

I'm not sure how this'll go, as I know not everyone will agree (pfft - ie, as in almost every thread on Mumsnet, ever!)

I thought it might be lovely to send some weekend-thanks back to the Mumsnet team, the site owners, the moderators, just the team in general really.

I know there's a lot of frustration about what we can and can't say, particularly within FWR.

But Mumsnet has held its ground, enabled a conversation, a two-way dialogue that just doesn't happen on many other sites right now.

They haven't shut the conversation down, when I'm guessing often it may have felt easier to do so given external pressure being exerted by certain groups and people (and hopefully the number of clicks on FWR as a result have been good for businessSmile)

There will be those who say 'oh, but look at the pile-ons' etc, this site is 'transphobic'.

But this site doesn't delete threads that often, so the evidence remains to the contrary. Threads that show intelligent, mostly calm discussion when people disagree with each other.

(I particularly find the terminology of 'pile-ons' interesting - often deployed when a poster finds lots of people on the thread disagree with them. If I recall, that used to be defined as 'hmm, most people seem to disagree with me' - now re-identifying as a 'pile-on' once 'more than two people disagree with me' as if it disagreement = act of hate and aggression! I suspect many visitors who solely come to FWR wouldn't cope with a wedding-thread/parking thread disagreement!)

And I'm pretty sure the Mumsnet team doesn't have a 'hive mind' just like none of us do here, so your office team meetings must be fascinating!

So to the moderators, the leadership team, to the person on reception who probably worries sometimes who's going to walk through the door, given some of the aggressive tactics we've seen from those who wish to silence women's voices:-

I'd like to thank you for keeping this space open to enable everyone to have the conversation.

Flowers Cake Wine Gin Glitterball depending on what floats your boat!

I offer my support to HQ, too.

Lots of different people, lots of different personalities, politics and a view points must make up the moderating team.

But one thing is for sure, they have kept communication going.

Justine Roberts publicly drew a line in the sand over free speech. And, as much as she has been able, has adhered to it ever since.

This board is a leaping, bucking, influential entity. And HQ and Justine have been right at the coal face. Maintaining their neutrality, whilst recognising harassment and intimidation, must have been a bloody nightmare of judgement.

And they called it several years ago. Despite banning people when we wish they hadn't.

There are many people who think we are operating at 80%, due to strictures, on this board.

But we are bloody operating.

And I guarantee that Justine Roberts and the team at HQ will absolutely go down as influential - on the right side of history.

Thanks MNHQ GinFlowersCake

Erm, i imagine they earn enough to buy their own cake and wine. Have you ever been to MN towers? It's like a gorgeous set of offices from a posh tv drama. Very Naice. I've had odd things happen to my mn account after i've posted gc things they decided they didn't like. Very creepy.

Datun · 08/04/2019 19:20

I’ve had my wrist slapped a few times for losing the rag on Mumsnet, but I still fecking think you’re bloody marvellous for giving us a place to have a voice. I also like to think that some of your staff now realise who the real vulnerable people are. 💐

NowtSalamander · 08/04/2019 22:17

Mumsnet Towers - sounds like the setting of the next superhero film for a reason.

You’ve ruined me for any other GC site as I am fundamentally a Luddite and can barely use this one as is, certainly can’t work Reddit. Never leave me FlowersFlowersFlowers

If at any point allowing us to freely discuss is costing you hard cash @MNHQ please break your own rules and crowdfund. I would give. I'm sure many others would too!
