Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

If Glinner is such an 'ally' why is he working only with white men?

I'm a GC feminist, but I do find all the fawning around Graham Linehan to be pathetic. He's barely given a peep about women's rights in the past, and suddenly he's jumped on the anti-TRA bandwagon, centering himself in what is and should a women-led movement (i.e. feminism).
The last straw for me is seeing fellow feminists fawn over this tweet - he posits himself as an ally, yet shows 0 interest in opening up the world of comedy beyond the thoughts of white men.

A heterosexual man being critical of transgenderism =! feminism

And is not a feminist. Being gender critical doesn't make you a feminist.

People like the OP are the reason I've always hesitated to wear the badge feminist despite, or perhaps because of, being raised by a hard core feminist in the 50's and 60's. When feminism becomes an agenda of "must believe" and "must do" and "must not" do in order to wear the badge, then I'm out. I've always gone gladly against the usual dogma, including being a SAHM. I don't care who points a finger. I'm also lucky enough to know lots of wonderful white males of the gentler, supportive sort supportive not of an agenda, but of the basic caring and compassion that comes from a healthy psyche rather than a political stance.
I'm fairly new to this forum and new to Glinner but what I've seen of him is top notch.

I really fancy a custard cream, or maybe a bourbon .
While watching black books

Melroses · 29/03/2019 17:02

I love black books Grin especially when Fran is learning the piano and Manny is hanging upside down hitting the strings with a knife and fork so that the piano teacher cannot tell that she hasn't practiced. And all the rest.

Lamaha · 29/03/2019 17:12

I had no idea who Glinner was before I joined this board and no idea who Graham Lineham was or many of the other names mentioned I was not living in UK-Ireland culture until a year ago. But I did bingewatch Black Books many years ago on the recommendation of a friend and loved it! My son in law has recommended Father Ted as well but I'm not sure how or where -- box set?

Coyoacan · 29/03/2019 17:19

I would not consider that Glinner is an ally on this issue though. He has a lot of people he loves who would be harmed if self-ID came in and IMHO that makes him a stakeholder.

Any father of children who loves their children would not want them be convinced to mutilate their bodies; and especially, if they have daughters, to have to use intimate facilities that are not sex-segregated; be unable to practice sports or attend Girl Guides, etc.

He is as much of a stakeholder as I am.

Bluestitch · 29/03/2019 17:23

Lamaha I think they are available on All 4.

Sitdownstandup · 29/03/2019 17:23

I'm not really invested in faffing over who counts as an ally or not. Better way to look at it as that some people are resources for a particular movement. Glinner certainly is.

Bluestitch · 29/03/2019 17:24

Yep just checked, they are all on there to watch.

You can buy all of Father Ted for less than a tenner Lamaha. If you "get" it, it's one of the best UK comedy programmes ever made. It's that good.

Lamaha · 29/03/2019 17:56

Thanks all, I'll get the series.

Ereshkigal · 29/03/2019 18:04

So yes, I'm going to thank him and support him. Partly because I think it's very well done, and partly because why on earth wouldn't you.

Me too. Thank you Glinner. No fawning, just an appreciation of a rare man sticking his neck out to challenge this.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/03/2019 18:07

Writing a comedy which ripped the piss out of the catholic priesthood and now, I assume, out of the position of pontiff seems like darned good subversive antipatriarchal stuff to me. And that's the sort of thing which maybe can't be done so effectively by an outsider.

Blueblueyellow · 29/03/2019 18:08

Haven't rtft, but he did campaign for repeal of the 8th in Ireland, i.e to allow abortions. Abortion was illegal in Ireland untill last year. So he is an ally. HTH

nettie434 · 29/03/2019 18:22

Datun he's also outspoken in supporting conservative gender roles and is pro life.

I really don't think that is true Plinytheprettier . After the tragic death of Savita Haleppenaver he spoke very movingly about how he & his wife had been in a similar position and his wife underwent an abortion.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 29/03/2019 18:26

nettie434 I think they were referring to Ben Shapiro

nettie434 · 29/03/2019 18:38

Ah thanks Jessica. That thread was a bit too long and complicated for me Blush

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 29/03/2019 18:39

No probs!! No idea why Ben Shapiro was raised anyway!

Blueblueyellow · 29/03/2019 19:00

Nettie After the tragic death of Savita Haleppenaver he spoke very movingly about how he & his wife had been in a similar position and his wife underwent an abortion.
Op, please understand this, Glinner is pro choice. Being from Ireland I had to have an abortion 5 years ago in liverpool. A group called Abortionsupportnetwork.com (yes please do donate if you can, abortion is still illegal in Northern Ireland.) helped me and paid 75 percent for me, for the flights, for the operation, and a lovely woman and her partner, who was heavily pregnant at the time put me up for two nights. Only after Savita did people in Ireland start to realise on a big scale how much we need abortion to be legal. Grahame was one of the people at the forefront.HTH.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 29/03/2019 19:03

Here’s the link to the abortion support network, they have also extended their services to include Gibraltar and Malta

Blueblueyellow · 29/03/2019 19:16

JessicaWake Thank you, I was to emotive to even give the Web address. That's the thing people think femenisim is about one or two issues but it goes so much deeper. And why do it Op? Because each of us has been affected in some way, we are real women, with real experiences, sometimes life changing experiences. We are not just sitting down on a Friday night with a glass of prosecco looking at @Glinners twitter page for a laugh. This affects us deeply.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 29/03/2019 19:23

You’re welcome, I am sorry you had to go through all that for bodily autonomy. I am grateful that I could access an abortion free in England, but the process is deliberately dehumanising and my DH was furious. They don’t give appointments and make you wait for hours and hours, without any food until late afternoon as I was told not to eat- I have endocrine disorders so was shaking so bad I couldn’t sign my own name. You are crammed into a hot room staring at each other during this time. And I had to go back a second day. I found the whole thing humiliating and very upsetting.

SocFem19 · 29/03/2019 19:27

Yeah I'm usually quite sensitive to stuff like this and can honestly say I haven't seen a man centre women more than he does in a long, long time. He seems sound.

birdsdestiny · 29/03/2019 19:29

Jessica and blueblue Flowers
I wonder if glinners experience of fighting for abortion rights in Ireland helped to give him the resilience for this fight.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 29/03/2019 19:35

birdsdestiny

Thank you. Yes, I’m sure it has.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 29/03/2019 19:53

Why aren't men speaking up about this? Where are all the men supporting us?
Why is everyone listening to this white man? It should be a women-led movement.
