Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Idea for a thread??

OK. So I was thinking, there are probably quite a few people like me who've never really been 'into' feminism before being radicalised on mumsnet. Didn't go to university /didn't join feminist groups and don't have anyone to discuss these things in real life.
could we do a thread where we say, nominate a woman, either current or historical who's done great or interesting things, not necessarily a feminist but inspirational anyway.

We could start a thread by say, suggesting someone, maybe including a link to an article /wiki page and then come back here to discuss. Maybe a personal heroine. We could keep it going until it naturally falls off the front page then start on someone new.

It could be really educational, inspirational and empowering and also provide some relief from the darker stuff that gets discussed here.

What do you think?

To start: Hedi Lamarr. Escaped violent husband, ran off to USA via England, made movies, designed wartime technology still used in mobiles and GPS today.

Ooh. Good one. 😁

So you mean each thread would have one woman as the "title" and there would be seperarate threads for different women?

Nightwitch · 28/03/2019 18:47

DpWm

Yes. So it doesn't get all messy and confusing.

Because I don't want it to be a mish mash. I'd like individual threads for celebrating specific women that can maybe referenced later.

I got the idea because I stumbled on a documentary last night about Lillian Bilocca and the headscarf revolutionaries and was really exited to talk about it with others. Yeah, shamelessly plugging thread I tried to start earlier. 😞

Nice idea OP I’ve just googled Lillian Bilocca, she sounds fab.

I like following WPUK they share lots of good posts about women I’d never previously heard of.

Great idea; it might be worth having an index thread that collects them all together as they pop up.

So if someone posts a thread about a new woman they or someone else can pop it onto the collection.

You could make it this thread if the title was changed - needs to be really clear - or start a new one.

DpWm · 28/03/2019 21:14

I like the idea of an Index thread, like the FAQ thread that heresyandwitchcraft compiled on trans threads.
It takes a dedicated user to compile an index thread.

I also like the idea of people on this board frequently starting posts featuring inspirational women that people can learn from or add to. (It would actually be a refreshing change from the usual thread topics).
I see where you're coming from Nightwitch

Well we've had a Martina Navratilova that went on for ages.
We've had a Penny Mordaunt...

Have we had much chat about Theresa May here?
Maggie Thatcher?
(Honest question... Feminists seem to have dodged T. May.)

It'll need to be something kick started by someone and tried out for a while.

NeorotrashWarrior that's a great idea, any suggestions for a title? . I'm rubbish at titles!

Lillian Bilocca was my grandma's generation, there may well be posters on here from Hull whose own grandmothers took part in the march. It would be great if people could add their stories.

I'm sure there was a poster on another thread whose grandmother did some kind of activism in New Zealand?
I can't remember who she was, or which thread, but that lady definitely deserves a thread.
I'd like it to be about lesser known women as well as the famous ones from all over the world, different cultures, religions and backgrounds.

We could discuss stuff like the political climate that created the need for activism. Attitudes to women in their backgrounds. What happened to her after. Her legacy
That sort of thing. You know, more interactive than just an article to read
Only qualification, she must be of the female sex and have achieved something great.

There would need to be a few great threads about women to run first, then a thread could be set up
"This thread is a thread to compile great threads about women"

Nightwitch · 28/03/2019 22:51

Gah! Needed elsewhere. Getting late now so if you have any more excellent ideas. Thread titles, women to start with that will get interest, add on here and we can maybe start tomorrow?
