Sharron Davies knows the injustice of competing in an uneven field and says that is why she is concerned by transgender athletes taking part in women’s sport, Martyn Ziegler writes

"Last week, Davies sent a letter to the IOC’s president Thomas Bach signed by 60 former British athletes — including 20 gold medallists — calling on the organisation to rethink its guidelines which, from 2016, have made it much easier for men who identify as women to compete in female sport."

Let's just hope that those athletes can put some pressure on and get the rules changed so that only xx females can compete in women's sports although I am not particularly hopeful given the current political climate around these issues

Great that so many athletes have signed the letter. I’ll be interested to hear if there is a response.

ivykaty44 · 26/03/2019 20:04

it will kill woman’s sports if it continues

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 26/03/2019 20:09

Fantastic article.

BixBeiderbecke · 26/03/2019 20:10

Sharon has really picked up the baton and run with it 💪

BixBeiderbecke · 26/03/2019 20:13

Also:
“I don’t think people realised how the rules changed in 2015. I believe it was stealthily done.”

Like everything else!

moofolk · 26/03/2019 20:18

Brilliant article. Davis has really helped the argument to gain ground as the issue as she explains it is so clear and the right thing to do so obvious.

MindTheMinotaur · 26/03/2019 20:36

I'm very thankful she's championing this.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 26/03/2019 21:00

Brilliant article and so good to see that 60 former British athletes have signed! That trick cyclist is going to be very busy hurling around their allegations of transphobia.

Ereshkigal · 26/03/2019 21:12

Sharron is brilliant on this.

SpeakUpXXWomen · 26/03/2019 21:18

The Times are linking to this article too, anyone got a share token please?

Hooray for Sharron and her co-signatories.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 26/03/2019 21:25

That's a dreadful article SpeakUp - as is being pointed out below the line:

Balls.

I thought the Times had done other stuff discrediting that ridic "research", maybe I read it somewhere else. Ok I will totally ignore that then. The comments are reassuring.

Just incredible and awe inspiring to watch this champion relay in action.

60 signatories, just wow SIXTY!

SpeakUpXXWomen · 26/03/2019 21:38

Also (slight derail) I have a paper copy of Times today, just double checked and that Q&A article is not in it. There is an excellent piece on the pay gap at Goldman Sachs and a nice picture of a hedgehog.

GrinitchSpinach · 26/03/2019 21:59

Thanks for posting! Sharron is a powerful voice to have on the side of women and girls.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 26/03/2019 22:05

Great

These articles went up in their 5.00pm update so presumably they'll be in the paper edition tomorrow.

Antibles · 26/03/2019 22:11

Sharron is being amazing.

boatyardblues · 26/03/2019 22:45

Fantastic work Sharron and colleagues! You are such an impressive advocate for female athletes.

SwimmingKaren · 26/03/2019 22:49

Sharon is my real life super hero.

littlbrowndog · 26/03/2019 22:56

Great Sharon 💪💪💪
Women are not hormonally weakened men

ErrolTheDragon · 26/03/2019 23:01

She's great. She didn't give up against the doped East Germans, she's made of stronger stuff than that. Those trying to bully great women athletes made a big mistake.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 26/03/2019 23:02

There are some particularly good comments under that article (looks around this thread...)
Including this great one from 'Girl Scout' :
it's really simple, transwomen are male, and don't belong in female sports. Women's sports are about extraordinary females, they're not about males, not about comparing us to males, arguing whether we are as a 'good as' males, nor indeed about including males (regardless of the nebulous concept of gender identity), women's sports are about females. It's not women's job to figure out this problem, share our resources or budge over for males. And the thing that insults me the most about this entire argument is this notion that a woman is a chemically suppressed man! Greer wrote the Female Eunuch all those years ago, to settle that argument. Females exist in our own right, and it frustrates me how we are expected to accommodate this push for trans rights for males, this a problem men need to figure out Flowers for that girl scout!
