As the (currently) one poster comments, 'ridiculous'.

*vulnerable ffs

I’m all for mixed changing rooms AND toilets as long as the cubicals have solid locking doors, not these stupid waffy curtains.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 17/03/2019 17:42

shops won't do that because the 'identifying as a woman' brigade will complain they are a woman today so need the female space.

I know, which makes this decision to create “gender neutral” changing all the more pointless. It’s placating. They will want more. They’re taking piece by piece and all these companies are just handing it to them like idiots.

Caileag · 17/03/2019 17:42

If enough of us - fortunate enough to have decent credit - went in and bought armfuls in various sizes to try on at home then return it all just within the time limit and state clearly at the tills that we’re not comfortable with mixed sex changing maybe that may be an effective protest??

ILoveMaxiBondi · 17/03/2019 17:44

and our swimming pool only has a mixed changing room so it's not that far out of the way, and I'll admit I've not felt threatened of venerable using them.

I was photographed over the top of a mixed sex changing cubicle in our local swimming pool as a teenager. Before there were smartphones that photograph silently.

I think this is fine if the changing room is constantly monitored by a member of staff, or two and the division between cubicles is floor to ceiling with preferably a full height door too.

NicoAndTheNiners · 17/03/2019 17:49

I would feel ok using gender neutral cubicles if they had open doors and either opened straight onto the shop floor (like my local fat face) or were consistently staffed my a shop worker who could see the corridor bit (like my local top shop and urban outfitters).

NicoAndTheNiners · 17/03/2019 17:50

Full doors, not open doors!

ssssm · 17/03/2019 17:51

Where we are M&S has unisex changing rooms - there are solid, lockable doors, along a single corridor with mirrors opposite and an attendant on duty. No problem whatsoever using these. Flimsy curtains and nooks and crannies - no thank you.

NicoAndTheNiners · 17/03/2019 17:51

And I would rather have gender neutral changing rooms set up as I just outlined rather than facing that DM sad face person or a man in a dress in a women's changing room with curtains.

AssassinatedBeauty · 17/03/2019 17:53

Any mixed sex changing cubicles would need to be full height walls and doors, with decent locks, and with attendants there all the time.

boatyardblues · 17/03/2019 17:56

Another reason not to shop at Primark. You could always use the changing room of your choice too - in another shop.

Nowt to stop you trying on in another store in town with single sex changing and returning items during the same trip.

Gone4Good · 17/03/2019 17:57

A few years ago Target here in the U.S made their toilets/restrooms gender neutral and were subsequently boycotted. Since then there have been instances all around the U.S of men following little girls and women into the toilets/restrooms to commit voyeurism, sexual assault, or just exposing their male genitals.

Yesterday I used the loos in a massive home improvement DIY store. There were about 10 stalls and I went into one at the furthest end of the row. Right after I closed the door someone entered the stall next to me.

The gap from the floor to the wall is about 14" or more and there are big gaps around the doors and also the frame where it is attached to the wall.

We were the only people in there and it was dead silent. I felt really uncomfortable seeing their black boots two feet from me as I sat there wishing they use one of the stalls the other end of the place. I quickly left and they were right behind me (they never 'went') and when I turned I saw it was clearly a man. These were not gender neutral loos either. I have heard women say they don't say anything when there they see a man in the loos because they are afraid of being called a bigot.

To make a few people feel comfortable they are putting the rest of us in danger.

PeapodBurgundy · 17/03/2019 18:00

ILoveMaxiBondi I know it happens, and places need to take steps to prevent it. Ours has privacy bars at the top which prevent people climbing up to take pictures over the top of the cubicles, but a big enough gap at the bottom that my baby rolled under it into the cubicle behind ours Hmm

ILoveMaxiBondi · 17/03/2019 18:03

I have heard women say they don't say anything when there they see a man in the loos because they are afraid of being called a bigot.

Well that’s the key to all this. That’s their biggest weapon. People are terrfied of being labelled a bigot. It’s at the point now where women are having the police come to their homes and “invite” them for an interview because of supposed bigotry online when they discuss this issue. Everyone is so determinedly woke.

abuseofpowercomesasnosurprise · 17/03/2019 18:07

It's not just the problem of having your own body exposed, there are plenty of men out there who will 'accidentally' leave their door open and expose themselves too. This happens all the time in mixed sex toilets, not to mention the amount of dick pics men like to send, or wave their dicks around when they're having a piss on the street. No ta!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/03/2019 18:08

I boycotted that place when they filled it with bloody rainbow pride tat and gave money to stonewall.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 17/03/2019 18:11

Peapod its a number of things and right now I think of it through the experience of my young DD who is of an age now where she enjoys the independence of trying stuff on by herself. Some reasons why gender neutral will not work-

  • most facilities are a flimsy curtain so don't provide much privacy anyway
  • depending on the time of day she could be the only one in there and I'll wait just outside
  • if any staff member is "on" fitting room duty they are often a young lady who if anything untoward were to happen may not feel comfortable addressing it

Why should the problem be hers if she doesn't feel safe?

You can probably substitute my young DD in this scenario for any woman who has experienced violence or trauma from a man. Or actually just me as plain and simple I would not feel comfortable being partially dressed in close proximity to a biological male.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 17/03/2019 18:13

No idea why a random paragraph was in bold Confused

Oh and when I referred to why it should be her problem I meant DD or other customer, not the shop assistant.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 17/03/2019 18:18

A month or so ago an Irish clothes shop posted CCTV footage of two of their young Male staff members taking off their tops and flexing/strutting in front of the mirrors in their changing rooms. Having a great time. The shop posted it as “banter”, humourus ribbing of their staff.

But I’ve seen This quite a few times on FB. Footage of young males doing what I consider to be metaphorical dick swinging in clothes shops. Showing off their muscles and being super macho. I’ve never seen footage of women or girls doing similar.

Does a 12 year old girl who is trying on her first bra really feel comfortable doing so with the above going on outside her curtain?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 17/03/2019 18:21

Maxi that's it exactly

hazeyjane · 17/03/2019 18:21

Our H&M have mixed changing rooms, with curtains, just like those in the photo. Which is why the dds (11 and 12) refuse to use them. Now they won't try try things on in Primark either...yay.....another big win for those pesky teenage girls.

UnWilly · 17/03/2019 18:24

At M&S recently with teen for bra fitting.

The cubicles are double ones, so a locked full length solid door with another curtained area inside.

I heard the staff turn a man away who was wanting to try something on and directed him to other changing.

He said there weren't any signs to say it was just for women and he was told that as it was in the lingerie section and fittings taking place there may be women in who may be uncomfortable.

He went off, but even assuming no dodgy intent on his part, whatever direction he approached from he had walked through several aisles of lingerie, so how he could have thought it was appropriate I really don't know.

Credit to the staff for stopping him though.

SuziQ10 · 17/03/2019 18:31

I can see what will happen.
Feel very sorry for the vulnerable teenage girls out there who will have to face being perved on in the semi-privacy of those changing rooms.

When will this rubbish end. For the sake of a very small % of the country, all our lives have to be negatively affected and our personal space and feeling of security completely disregarded. Thanks a lot. So selfish.
