Joan McAlpine MSP has posted a new thread criticising today's article in the Herald by Paul Hutcheon and challenging the view that conversations which challenge self-ID are "toxic."

I love her style: short, calm, accurate and evidenced. If only someone like her had been on the Women and Equalities Committee back in 2010 or whenever. Maria Miller, Penny Mordaunt, Jess Phillips — Joan McAlpine demonstrates what women ought to have been able to expect from you and shows how badly you have let women and girls down.

She makes her points clearly and respectfully. The clarity is quite powerful. Why is this so difficult for other politicians? If only we could clone Joan Smile.

I'm a bit in love with Joan.

She always backs up what she says with references, links and evidence.

I am sick of hearing that the debate is toxic with violence "on both sides". It's a pack of lies - just like the lies in the stats around the suicides, murders, assaults and victimisation of the supposedly 'most marginalised' group that call themselves trans. Just like the lies around "it could never happen": It did happen and we could prove it.

Fact checking blew apart all those lies. They were designed to garner sympathy and shut critics down. A cursory check of the claim that "both sides" are responsible for toxicity blows this one apart too.

Women are angy and have every right to be so - but we cannot be accused of the sorts of sabotage, doxxing, vexatious prosecutions, assaults and intimidation that have come from people in masks, with blue hair.

Joan is fantastic. So calm and rational.

One of the few politicians I am impressed with at the moment.

SpeakUpXXWomen · 17/03/2019 20:23

She is but I am calling her McAlpine from now on. We always refer to men by full name or surname, especially in politics, lets show women the same gravitas.

I came looking for this. A thread in praise of Joan McAlpine. She is amazing. I think I'm in love with her. I became aware of her when I watched the Rosa Freedman committee evidence session (twice) and she has been amazing, uncompromising and faultless since. She clearly had a full understanding of this from the word go. Let's hope some of it rubs off on the likes of Nicola Sturgeon who is either woke or thinks that way votes lie.

It's been interesting to watch Martina publicly play out her evolution from mildly gender sceptical to full-on, as she gets pilloried by the TRAs, going from one WTAF moment to the next.

But Joan seemed to burst into the public consciousness fully formed in her understanding of this and she is not backing down.

If you are reading this Joan, thank you, you are fabulous xxxx
