Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but on this page the UK government claim that "gender" is a protected characteristic:

www.gov.uk/government/organisations/equality-and-human-rights-commission

This can be reported here (I've done so, but it may be helpful if others do too):

www.gov.uk/contact/govuk

More on David Isaac here. Last year he was appointed chair of governors at UAL.

OvertheInfluence · 14/03/2019 17:52

Urgh! I've emailed every link on this thread to complain.

This isn't insidious, it's flagrant.

EweSurname · 14/03/2019 17:56

Bloody hell

OldCrone · 14/03/2019 18:40

I've just remembered where I'd seen UAL mentioned recently on here. It was on this thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3529135-grayson-perry-irks-me?msgid=85507318

Post by @GPismyboss on that thread:

GP is the Chancellor of UAL. That’s the university that Central st Martins is part of. I mention that as the college was mentioned in the OPs first post. Lots of women work for UAL. UAL has a gender pay gap. UAL really listens to Stonewall. It’s not a great place to be GC. I think it’s the next Goldsmiths.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 14/03/2019 18:57

I've emailed. Bastards..

PaleBlueMoonlight · 14/03/2019 19:15

GetsReported. This stuff really my goat.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 14/03/2019 19:16

Eh?

Try again,

Reported. This stuff really gets my goat.

userschmoozer · 14/03/2019 19:18

I'll email my MP but I still haven't heard anything back from him from IWD.

stumbledin · 15/03/2019 14:11

There's another thread about this. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3531825-Governments-own-website-sites-gender-not-sex-as-protected-characteristic

And I didn't notice at first but the web page is an old "holding" page to say that EHRC now has its own web site. Where (I think!) they do have the right list of protected characteristics.

But just shows how far by 2016 the gripping misuse of the word gender, when it should actually be sex had crept.

This has been one of the most powerful tools for trans activists by graduallly getting people to use the word gender when they mean sex. they sucessfully lobbied the nuj about this, in much the same way (also part of queeer activism) they got the media to talk about sex "work" rather than prostitution.

It might be worth complaining direct to EHRC and point out how sloppy it makes them look to have this page incorrectly stating what their work is (meant) to be about. [hmmm]

GPismyboss · 15/03/2019 18:01

Thanks OldCrone. Gin

GerryblewuptheER · 18/03/2019 11:45

Just got the same reply as Ewe

Original query with Gov.uk closed.. Hmm

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/03/2019 18:05

I had mine today, too.

Let's see what happens next, I suppose...

Daughterofmabel · 18/03/2019 18:21

I got an acknowledgement today. Didnt say owt about EHRC.

SlipperyLizard · 19/03/2019 07:58

Just reading a newly released DWP consultation on pensions (rock n roll!), I’d already spotted numerous typos but this is the only one I feel like complaining about!

Incorrect Government Information
SlipperyLizard · 19/03/2019 07:58

Clearly this isn’t a typo though.

OvertheInfluence · 24/03/2019 08:37

Just wanted to resurrect this thread to say...the page now correctly lists sex 🎉

Well done everyone that emailed, proof that it works!

SingingLily · 24/03/2019 12:20

Delighted with the result! Thank you, ClingFilmApplications, for spotting it in the first place.

ClingFilmApplications · 26/03/2019 15:49

Yay!

gov.uk page in my original post has now been FIXED.

Thanks to everyone who helped get this sorted!

OP posts:
Apollo440 · 26/03/2019 15:51

Well done. Let's roll this nonsense back wherever we find it.

sackrifice · 26/03/2019 15:53

Well done, I reported it as well - they must have had quite a few reports so they had to change it.

Backseatonthebus · 26/03/2019 15:57

Brilliant work. I emailed my local County Council who were claiming exactly the same thing on their website. They never replied to any of my emails, but I can no longer find the incorrect information, so hopefully they have now changed it. Small victories but important ones.

AltGr · 26/03/2019 16:23

Unbrave lurker here, slowly moving towards small actions. Is there a thread more generally listing places where sex has been replaced by gender? I've just spotted the Royal College of Nursing has listed gender instead of sex as a protected characteristic. A female dominated profession, where I'd imagine it's vital to know the difference! I've contacted them, but in case any RCN members felt the urge to do the same, I thought I'd post here. I can't work out how do link on my phone but it's in several places on their website, including in their strategic vision for equality and inclusion publications.

OldCrone · 26/03/2019 16:28

Link to RCN page on discrimination where they use gender instead of sex.

JackyHolyoake · 26/03/2019 16:40

It is the responsibility of the Government Equalities office to monitor such behaviours by other public institutions. As I have said befioe, though, the Government Equalities Office is nothing more than a sub-branch of Stonewall now.
