Twitter is a porn site

There's a campaign to get twitter labelled as a porn site. Essentially this would mean twitter would have to clean up its very sticky act OR users would have to pay for a special porn card thingy to access it.

If you have:
A strong stomach
Mind bleach

And you can face looking, the campaign are asking for screenshots to be sent too:
[email protected]

I can't believe twitter bans women for stating biological fact, but sex work and hard-core porn is absolutely fine. There are literally thousand of these accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers. Just typing 18 + and it's gang bang all the way. Twitter IS a porn site, it could at least be honest.

The problem with your OP is the term sex work, as if it is a job like any other.

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 11/03/2019 07:05

Okay, prostitution then.

But if people could help that would be great. I think it's a real issue for twitter.

No. No they won't. It is not possible for our government to block access to porn sites in the first place.

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 11/03/2019 08:01

Well they've been trying to bring in legalisation to stop under 18's accessing porn for a while. The law has passed and I think they are trying to bring in checks from April. Don't know how successful that'll be!

Either way, putting pressure on Twitter to clean up its act is surely a good thing?

Don't know how successful that'll be!

It will be entirely unsuccessful. The only people it may stop accessing porn is the very elderly if they don't have much internet nous. It will be laughably simple to bypass.

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 11/03/2019 09:04

My kids school have told them that any googling of vpn's will led to suspension!!! I'm guessing as all sides prepare.

Grin

I just want twitter to take a serious look at themselves and think this campaign could help!

"OR users would have to pay for a special porn card thingy to access it. "

Or just use a proxy/VPN/TOR.

The "prove your age with a credit card" thing the Government wants is very easily circumvented. TOR for example is free to use and can be downloaded and set-up in minutes. The proposal intends to protect young people from porn but overlooks the fact young people (who have grown up with the internet) are far more tech-savvy than the middle-aged politicians who grew up without it.

I would be interested in knowing just how the Government is even going to implement this. Not to mention if someone does verify their age using a card to access porn their details will end up on a database which will be of high interest to hackers.

This will be a disaster. Wait and see.

quixote9 · 11/03/2019 19:38

Of course it's easily circumvented. That's not the point. Right now, Twitter can pretend it's a free speech exchange of the people's news and all that good stuff, with yes maybe some unsavory crap stuck to the bottom of its shoe.

Making it label itself a porn site makes the excuses hollow.

It's far from unjustified, too. That resistance to taking down misogynist garbage because "engagement" while censoring feminists at the drop of a tweet tells you where they're making their money and what they really are.

traceyracer · 11/03/2019 20:43

do you want to ban porn completely?

evilkitten · 11/03/2019 20:55

Don't forget google. It pretends that it's just a search engine, but google images is awash with smut. We should make that label itslef as a porn site too, or else the 'do no evil mantra' just rings hollow.

Also, mumsnet. Have you seen the sex topic?!!! Not something I'd want my children reading. Likes to think of itself as a parenting website, but in truth, it's just corroding this proud nation's moral fibre.

Oldermum156 · 11/03/2019 22:04

They could clean up like tumblr did. Oh the tears!

I can always tell the hardcore pedophile lefties when they scream about any safeguarding of under 18s (those are children, for those of you who are confused) on the internet. Can the smart ones get around it? Sure. The immature ones cannot and they will be truly protected by it.

NotTerfNorCis · 11/03/2019 22:38

Twitter reflects the way you use it. I have two Twitter accounts, one quite large, and neither has anything to do with porn. It's a shame there's a lot of porn on Twitter, but that's a reflection of the internet as a whole.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 11/03/2019 22:45

Don't forget google. It pretends that it's just a search engine, but google images is awash with smut.

You are aware that those images aren't hosted by google?
It is just a search engine (well, apart from owning youtube and all that other stuff).
The content you find in searches is not google's.

SpeakUpXXWomen · 11/03/2019 22:53

Well having done some research on preserving women's single sex rights to sport over the last fortnight I can tell you without a doubt that a twitter search for "women sport" brings up some totally irrelevant ads trying to sell sex services in various forms. I can't see how it isn't a porn site when a child is unable to look up sportswomen without seeing ads for online prostitution.

DravenRainrix · 12/03/2019 00:17

I've never seen porn on twitter.

Just trans folk trying to replace women like me kind of freshly hatched pod species.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 12/03/2019 00:20

After typing my town's name in the search field, I found a prostitute plying her trade and retweeting explicit content from porn sites.

I reported her profile and Twitter failed to see anything wrong.....

evilkitten · 12/03/2019 07:22

Ah, an apologist for the pornographers. Google cache the images and catalogue them. They are certainly not innocent.

The government's proposals are a breath of fresh air. Verifying age by providing your credit card details to an independent third party, such as mindgeek (the owner of the major porn sites) is infallible. This will make access to porn on the Internet almost impossible. Look how well blocking p2p file sharing sites has worked.

Once the Internet is safe, we can turn our attention to the problem of local newsagents that sell smut and get them all shut down.

Thorphin · 12/03/2019 08:15

traceyracer - if you believe the government should ban things for the public good, such as drugs or guns, then yes banning porn for the public good is sensible. It is damaging for those who participate and those who consume. www.yourbrainonporn.com/research/

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 12/03/2019 08:29

I just find it really odd that a mainstream media, like Twitter, allows porn and prostitution. Rightly or wrongly surely that normalises it?
I first came upon it on Twitter when reading some (of the more unhinged) TRAs pages. Theres nothing to stop a kid seeing that, and as a society, is that what we want?

Light needs to be shone on this. Twitter is a mainstream media source. Tumblr banned them? Why not Twitter?
