Views that were beyond the pale are now commonplace. It is time to stop pretending that all opinions are equal

Contributors are presented as experts when, more often than not, they’re just another person with an opinion. We absorb their hot take on the day’s events often without questioning what lies behind them. Anyone with an opinion is invited on to TV or radio, without a hint of critical analysis

That’s why it’s important that we as consumers are critical of what we are hearing and watching, and are aware of where it’s coming from. We need to stop mindlessly accepting that everything we are fed is objective, be critical of the sources and who’s speaking. I constantly get contacted by media platforms to debate a range of topics related to trans issues — despite having no expertise in the specific topic being discussed — simply because I’m a trans person. Lived experience is important, but that doesn’t mean I can comment on the specific effects of testosterone on people’s bodies. For that you need a scientist.

Owl not fox.

NeurotrashWarrior · 08/03/2019 19:30

Bless.

Shoots own foot and leaves.

Owl not fox

Oops Blush - I will ask MNHQ to correct.

Easy mistake to make after world book day! (Gruffalo)

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/03/2019 19:35

Shoots own foot and leaves.

Indeed. That degree of cognitive dissonance is impressive. Unless of course they are actually coming out on the side of science.

Does that mean Owl and Fox are now married and that Owl took Fox’s surname? They are quite traditional at heart aren’t they?

truthisarevolutionaryact · 08/03/2019 19:43

Absolutely - the amount of born males now claiming to be women and to know more about being a woman is outrageous. So glad to have Owl Fisher on the side of biological women.

Ereshkigal · 08/03/2019 19:47

I hope Owl therefore enjoyed today's R4 discussion between scientists and Nick Robinson.

Thingybob · 08/03/2019 19:58

We need to demand that people with either relevant expertise or those directly affected are at the centre, and not just anyone

I guess that means that women are allowed to speak out about women's issues as they are directly affected?

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 08/03/2019 20:03

I suspect they wanted to express the opposite of what the article actually says, they wanted "centre transpeople" but have said the opposite due to limited expression and articulation.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 08/03/2019 20:03

I thought owl declared that they were non binary - so can only talk about... nothing?

Man marries woman... such days!

zanahoria · 08/03/2019 21:05

I always get Ox and Fowl mixed up

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 08/03/2019 21:11

Ferret and vile?

I felt sure that this would be ironic but I actually agree with every word of the article. I wonder whether * finds the bonkers claims of RMK a bit much? Surely some of the AWAs must realise that the recent days have caused irreparable harm to their cause?

I guess that means that women are allowed to speak out about women's issues as they are directly affected?

Oh no. I don't think * would go that far.

*I just can't be arsed to google which fucking wild animal goes with which made up pronoun today, insert your own. This is not transphobic, it is attention-seeking-twat-phobic.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/03/2019 21:42

It's an odd feeling isn't it...

I too was wondering if they were distancing themself from the unknown cyclist who's name I can't remember, but then they are a really prominent TRA so I don't know what to think.

I agree with every word they said though.

Did you click on the embedded links?

I agree with every word but not in the way owl intended.

youllhavehadyourtea · 08/03/2019 21:45

I can read this two ways.

The first ( which is how I initially read it) just because you're trans doesn't mean you are qualified to speak about testosterone levels in sport ( I assume they have been asked to do so)

Second ( which it could also be) just because you're a female athlete, it doeasn't mean you're qualifies to speak about testosterone levels in sport.

So I'm not sure which of the two they are saying, although I have no quibble with a cry for more critical thinking, please.

MilletSentToForceIt · 08/03/2019 21:49

Be careful what you wish for (and listen to R4 this morning, about 8.30).
Also, do you need us to try to get them back on, so that you can check whether, if you can’t change sex then you probably can’t change species either. Soz

I just did. The one about transwomen in sport illustrates Owls point beautifully, written by someone who is an anthropologist and a bioethicist, not someone who does something related to biology etc...

This is what they were going for.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 08/03/2019 21:59

We know that was their intention because it's the TRA line and they can't deviate from it. Women butt out, you don't know what you are doing.

youllhavehadyourtea · 08/03/2019 22:04

For a moment I thought there was a glimmer of hope it was the First.

CaptainMarvelBunting · 08/03/2019 22:59

Nah, don't be silly. This lot's schtick is pure "Will you women just shut up!" in lots of creative ways. There's not an ounce of humility or reflective practice in these two at all.

Barracker · 08/03/2019 23:19

Owl not fox

Ah.

But, what I think we'd all like to know, is
what does the Fox say?

CaptainMarvelBunting · 08/03/2019 23:33

Grin Barracker, thanks for insane earworm
