Trans women and periods

I'm just going to throw it out there - few things make me more angry than reading about trans women and their 'periods'. Now I know I've had them my whole adolescent/adult life and I know plenty about how they work (and how they impact your life when they're not straightforward, god I know about that) but where does this trans period bollocks come from?

Without a uterus or ovaries or eggs or uterine lining or any of that stuff, where does any sort of cycle come from? Do they take oestrogen on an artificial cycle with progesterone or something? Or am I basically affording way too much time and thinking to something which makes zero sense in the first place and should just ignore it altogether? 🤨

Even if there is some element of truth in "sore breasts and dreadful moodswings" I'm still going to be angry anyway, I guess. That's not a period. That's sore boobs and a moodswing.

Help me o wise ones.

Transwomen are prescribed the contraceptive pill to provide them with female hormones. They take a monophasic (dose is the same in every tablet) type without a seven day break so there are no cyclic variations in hormones. Oestrogen does not cause cramping, prostaglandin does. I wish someone would buy the poor lambs a biology book. If they are losing blood they need to see a doctor!

Unlike most hormones, the prostaglandins are not secreted from a gland to be carried in the bloodstream and work on specific areas around the body. Instead, they are made by a chemical reaction at the site where they are needed and can be made in nearly all the organs in the body. Prostaglandins are part of the body’s way of dealing with injury and illness.

Fermat's and Jessica I empathise; 25 years to get my diagnosis of endo and then discovered adenomyosis (endo's evil cousin) as a bonus. Dismissed by numerous doctors when I told them I thought I had endo. Too much damage done, due to delay in diagnosis, for a hysterectomy, or at the surgery would be high risk. I now have morphine when I need it and will have to wait for the menopause to rid me of the pain. I'll just go and check my cis privilege. This kind of shit makes me rage.

adultFemaleElf · 08/03/2019 18:21

This is ridiculous.
Lots of men take female hormones for other reasons (prostate cancer for example) and they most definitely don’t start having periods with their non existent female reproductive organs.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 08/03/2019 18:23

They do know where menstrual blood comes from don’t they?

Why doesn’t someone give them a little female anatomical doll when they declare themselves a woman? It might clear up a few things.

NO THEY FUCKING DON'T.

That feels better.

viques · 08/03/2019 18:32

I will believe in transwo men (Thankyou for my new word) menstruation when I see that the Sanpro aisles in tescos and boots have shelves of scented penis pads (in three absorbencies of course) alongside nicely decorated boxes of arse tampons.

Until then I shall simply judge, smirk and raise my eyebrows.

MillytantForceit · 08/03/2019 18:34

Trans WUMming.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 08/03/2019 18:48

TurboTeddy I am so sorry for what you’ve experienced. I find it too upsetting to even repeat some of the things my doctor has said to me when I’ve asked for help, tests etc I really feel for you having to rely on such a heavy painkiller.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 08/03/2019 18:50

I mean, this person is just stupid. This isn’t complicated. You don’t just take hormones and experience menstruation without the blood you foolish fetishist. Their ignorance is an embarrassment.

Cyborgseadog · 08/03/2019 18:59

On my period atm, and this gives me the rage!

Those cockwombles are appropriating something they have no chance in hell of experiencing. Ever.

I had one of my ovaries (plus the corresponding fallopian tube) removed a few months ago, because a cyst the size of a FIFA ball developed in/on it, and completely obliterated it. Because of my monthly cycle. I looked 7 months pregnant.

Try and fetishise that.

Lymphy · 08/03/2019 19:03

This really pisses me off! They don’t have periods nor a frigging cycle. I dish out synthetic hormones in the form of contraception every sodding day, funny how they cease menstruation for the vast majority of women 😡. I suspect I’ve just peaked.

NeurotrashWarrior · 08/03/2019 19:09

I have the most innocuous cycle and have never had bloating or cramps (sorry) and have always fallen pregnant easily when I want to so it's a pile of bullshit.

I notice when I'm ovulating; I get a bit hot (in many ways) but that's the progesterone,

The pill made me put on weight and made me need more thyroxine and made me quite loony.

It's just synthetic hormones. Fucking up your systems.

EcclesThePeacock · 08/03/2019 19:11

They 'get everything else'? Confused they don't have a clue about dysmenorrhea, do they? It's simply not something you can imagine if you've never had a womb, in the same way that women have no idea what being kicked in the balls feels like.

TurboTeddy · 08/03/2019 19:16

Jessica they are falling over themselves to give me whatever I want now. It's piss poor compensation for the years of suffering but I dictated another gyn referral letter for my GP 😀 (and he let me!) a few weeks ago and have another appt in April. This time I will be asking why they haven't mentioned uterine artery embolization as a treatment option. My favourite dismissal was "everyone who reads the daily mail thinks they have endometriosis", so offended at being taken for a DM reader 😁.

I can recommend a tens machine though, not brilliant but does give some relief.

PiebaldHamster · 08/03/2019 19:18

Y chromosome = male
XX (or X0) = female

Blokes do not have periods. The end.

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 08/03/2019 19:41

betty Grin

Honestly though. I have the coil, I'm a person with a womb (you might remember when that was a woman) but I don't have periods. And the really funny thing is because I don't have womb lining to shed, I don't have any symptoms. Nothing. Nadda.

Crazy people

Ereshkigal · 08/03/2019 19:44

think ‘transwo men’ could catch on...

Seen that before Grin also happy with putting a space in "trans misogyny" as it's clear that "trans" is an adjective, and suggests the direction the misogyny is coming from.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 08/03/2019 19:58

My favourite dismissal was "everyone who reads the daily mail thinks they have endometriosis"

Are you serious? You should complain. That is fucking outrageous. Total bastards.

TurboTeddy · 08/03/2019 20:26

It was many years ago when I was easily intimidated by the medical profession, I'm sure they would find me easier to deal with if I was still.
I could write a book about the rubbish that's been said to me along the way and I'm quite sure I'm not alone.
Jessica I do hope things ease up for you soon so you can get back to having a life.
I'm assuming you were referring to gender neutral total bastards 😁 cos yes they really are sometimes.

AssassinatedBeauty · 08/03/2019 20:27

These fools know less than nothing about female reproductive biology. No womb, no ovaries, no Fallopian tubes, no vagina, no hormone cycle. Nothing about what they may or may not be experiencing is any kind of period.

It's embarrassing sad appropriation. And I really do believe that in a lot of cases it's fetishistic.

Scatobrain · 08/03/2019 20:29

There’s a fine line between a beer belly and a phantom pregnancy.

PreseaCombatir · 08/03/2019 20:33

‘hormones are what causes a period’

Yes, the hormones have an effect on your uterus.
You dont have a uterus.

Idiots 🤦‍♀️

MhairiV · 08/03/2019 20:35

The point about misinformation (and plain lies, I suppose) causing problems for young people who think they're trans seems really valid. I always thought of it as transwomen mostly performing what they believe to be feminine gender roles but makes sense if it's also about performing what they understand to be trans roles too. I can't accept that this much delusion is healthy.
