Sex and gender are different but related things. Neither is binary. For an accessible introduction to why sex isn’t binary, Wikipedia is not a bad place to start.

Sadly, I have in the past had colleagues who were quite competent in their own area of science (physical sciences) who were biblical fundamentalists and believed God created the world in 6 days.

Out of interest, did any of them think that us non-believers should be coerced into saying we believe in the literal truth of the Bible?

Good point, nauticant, they didn't. They may have felt quietly sad at the thought we were all going to hell, but they didn't try to coerce our speech.

I know at least three biologists who are young Earth creationists (one of them in NZ) but they all come from very religious backgrounds, the NZ one is a Mormon, one has a West African Evangelical background and the third is a Wee Free.The latter admitted that she applied for the PhD studentship at a prestigious Scottish university to be able to argue pro-Creationisms with the authority the Doctor title would give her.
