BBC Radio 4 Today
@BBCr4today
Today: Labour MP Dame Margaret Hodge (0710) questions whether she was misled by Jeremy Corbyn, something his office strongly denies; Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt on the Yemen conflict (0810); and marathon great Paula Radcliffe on transgender athletics (0730) #r4Today

Interesting - I wonder what Paula thought she was talking about? Presumably it was to do with DSD rather than the trans issue. That would explain why her message didn't come across as clearly as she wanted.

Serena has narrated a dodgy Nike advert with a bit in that says "they told us we were nuts when we decided to compete against men".
I think she may be under contract/unable to speak as a result.

I really dislike the Nike advert as it exploits the Caster situation and Caster has enough complication in her life as it is.

placemats · 05/03/2019 10:44

Listened to it and I thought Paula Radcliffe had a calm and measured response. I salute her for it.

Obviously though she will be 'added to the list'.

Blueblueyellow · 05/03/2019 10:46

Off topic but about RMc, I've noticed on their twitter they keep pointing out the dictionary definition of the word transphobia, a woman can't use the dictionary definition of woman but they can use the dictionary definition of transphobia.Hmm
But actually maybe they can't actually understand dictionarys since they think everything is transphobic.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 05/03/2019 10:46

(Tonya Harding is, of course, not in it because she is the wrong kind of crazy)

Iused2BanOptimist · 05/03/2019 10:46

Begging for a rewrite. Grin

Given the way things are I don't think we should expect current athletes to speak up. I hope more and more legends of yesteryear join in. We also need properly qualified sports scientists to go on the media to state facts.

nauticant · 05/03/2019 12:02

we should expect current athletes to speak up

They'd be putting their sponsorship at significant risk.

AuntieCJ · 05/03/2019 12:04

Love it. More! More!

Jenny Meadows was a prominent critic of Russian doping. She was controversially not selected for the London Olympics where, it emerged, the Russians were so full of pills they rattled as they ran.

Going further back, Diane Mohdal was another anti-doping campaigner. She was fitted up with a bogus lab test and had to spend years and all her money clearing her name.

GiantKitten · 05/03/2019 12:20

NotBadConsidering
McKinnon tweeting furiously recently about how “NO TRANS OLYMPIANS” since the rule came in, while failing to acknowledge the women McKinnon has deprived with McKinnon’s victory and all the other amateur or school events like in Connecticut which matter JUST AS MUCH.

Prior to late 2015 (when presumably Olympic teams had already been selected) SRS was still a requirement. Interesting that the number of trans athletes has soared since then. They really want to hang on to their bits, don’t they?

MillytantForceit · 05/03/2019 12:23

The rules changed in 2015 and require a year of documented lowered testosterone, so none in 2016.

EweSurname · 05/03/2019 12:25

The was a good article about how women who spoke out about doping in the 80s were derided. It had something like “moaning Minnies” in the headline?

I can understand why those who are currently competing would be frightened of voicing their concerns. I am hopeful that if the furious cries of transphobes recede (or indeed, reach a “boy who cried TERF” crescendo) they may band together and speak up one day.

Yet female to male, FTM, go through the very painful chest binding and no MTF, male to female, has called this out as unnecessary.

There is no way a female high on testosterone can even begin to compete with the elite male athletes.

Males who go through puberty, and I've given birth to a male, are significantly different to females who go through puberty, and I've given birth to two females. Plus I watched two younger brothers go through puberty and I myself went through puberty.

I quite like this guy's twitter feed, he has definitely been peak transed Grin
There are plenty more like him out there, it is just the "woke" media - BBC, Guardian, Independent etc. all have their heads firmly where the sun doen't shine.

"Obviously though she will be 'added to the list'."

Substitute "Spartacus" with "Martina", because there are lots of us.

The Today Programme is just Take a Break for progressives.

The article Ewe is referring to is 'Surly Shirley' and the assault on women's sport - then and now.

It's really eye-opening and explains why female athletes aren't speaking up against this.

It's easy to forget that professional and globally popular women's sports hasn't always existed; in fact it's a very recent phenomenon that was created over the last few decades by very talented and determined women in the face of considerable obstacles. It's also much more institutionally fragile and disrespected than men's sports.

The author does an excellent job of articulating the sexist double standards that the media and sporting authorities apply to female athletes, so that they are continually reminded that their participation in elite sports is contingent on them remaining 'good girls' who don't rock the boat. The social sanctions reserved for those athletes who DID rock the boat, such as Shirley Babashoff, who called out the East German doping regime, were severe and often career-ending.

The other women athletes around Shirley Babashoff learned her lesson well. Speak out and get thumped in the press. Be labeled a “bad sport” or a “sore loser.” Get told you’re imagining things, or that you’re not seeing what’s right in front of your own eyes. Most important of all, don’t take yourself or your performance seriously. Give up your athletic dreams if they say you should, and do it with a smile on your face, like a good girl.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 05/03/2019 13:40

No trans Olympians? What about the ex eastern bloc countries with the state sponsored drugging of female competitors - this is now acknowledged and some have had permanent health problems due to the drugs they were given (that have then male bulk and strength as well of lowering their voices and giving some facial hair).

I guess they would count under the trans umbrella (trans-ed rather than trans as they didn’t consent).

LizzieSiddal · 05/03/2019 13:41

I very much doubt any conpeteing athlete will spark out. They all get funded/sponsorship and iirc it’s the Lotttery fund isn’t it?

MillytantForceit · 05/03/2019 13:52

Interesting

If the lobby is now transing the dead, and Caitlyn Jenner is now on IMDB as appearing in films such as:

www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=24728

...then shouldn't we trans the DDR athletes who were forcibly medicated by the Stalinists such as Heidi (now Ralph) Krieger:
