Have just seen this on Twitter. If this happens it will be huge.

FFS, why do I have a job? I need to be zipped in a onesie and glued to JJ's twitter for the next few months.

Nephilim1964 · 02/03/2019 17:35

It's definitely going to get interesting. Might even invest in a onesie myself.

Breaking the law how? I can guess but is it ‘the boys’?

Nephilim1964 · 02/03/2019 17:40

By having non women on the lists.

Great news. Glad this is going ahead after last months setback.

Manderleyagain · 02/03/2019 17:47

I assume they will be trying to show that it's unlawful to have a shortlist if you include some legal men (self Id tw) but not others (men). So the shortlist as operated by Labour doesn't meet the requirement for what's allowed by the equality act, because that allows them to discriminate against men in favour of people with the protected characteristic of female, not in favour of females and some males. Just guessing at that.

Nephilim1964 · 02/03/2019 17:48

I'm not entirely sure which angle they're going for but if I find out I'll post it here.

Not bad going eh?

I absolutely think what Labour is doing needs challenging but I think we have to be prepared for the outcome being the end of AWS rather than them upholding the proper Equality Act definition.

I can live with that because I want to see them challenged regardless but it's a definite possibility particularly if the discrimination against any man argument is used.

MillytantForceit · 02/03/2019 17:55

Sex Discrimination in Employment, I'd guess.

Nephilim1964 · 02/03/2019 17:55

I'd like to be a fly on the wall if they get asked to define what a woman is. Cue lots of circular arguments, shifting constellations and talk of feelz..

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/03/2019 18:00

They will just repeat the chant ‘anyone who says they are’.

Gosh from her twitter ^Women Will Not prioritise any man's need for validation.
Women will Prioritise Keeping OUR RIGHTS to: safety; dignity; privacy; representation; and participation in public and sporting life.^😃

Datun · 02/03/2019 18:08

Interesting that it's hitting the Zeitgeist of the wheels coming off the Tavistock, the Martina effect and the Helen Islan debacle in court.

I agree it makes people question the need for AWS in the first place. But that need hasn't disappeared. And all parties would have to agree to it, otherwise it just looks like misogyny. And that's another, huge, hot potato.

Either way, it's more sunlight.

Bring it on.

And say what you like about Jennifer James, she is bloody doing it.

If this entire issue has taught me one thing, it's that women are normal people. Flawed, difficult, tricky, blind.

And bloody determined.

Yay.

PencilsInSpace · 02/03/2019 18:08

Very pleased to see this going ahead. I'll donate again once the papers have been filed.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/03/2019 18:11

I was in the gym today and having a shower.

Now I’m very blind as a bat and was wondering what I’d do if I realised there was a male bodied person in there too. I would feel humiliated, upset, scared. I can barely see without my glasses and am very shy about my body.

The males who have made a point of using ladies (and boast on twitter) have made an issue of strolling around the ladies, making sure they are noticed. Some have taken photos with women/girls in the background as if to ‘prove’ they are women.

I don’t want to be hiding naked in the shower whilst someone on a bloody ego trip struts around the changing room. What about my dignity and feelings? Why are they less than a male person who doesn’t need to use the facilities?

Sadly my gym is in a university so I worry that I will come across a man in the ladies (one of the colleges is Very Woke Central).

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/03/2019 18:12

I can scream really loudly though. And I would.

OhHolyJesus · 02/03/2019 19:05

I swear the thread about judicial review and following Miranda's success in court this is another great step forward. Backing you all the way JJ and will donate since I've been paid xx

OlennasWimple · 02/03/2019 19:31

Glad this is moving forward - and with great timing too

Meanwhile, while we've been looking at sports and rappers, L Madigan has been elected as the Labour Students National Women's Officer

I know Labour Students isn't the same as the Labour Party itself, but it's another example of how the Labour Party gives zero shits about the spaces and positions it had previously constructed for women
