Iain Macwhirter: Get over it - cis women are just on the wrong side of history

WHEN is a woman not a woman? When she’s being addressed by the Scottish Government. It is now “pejorative” to call a person with a uterus and XX hormones a “biological woman”, according to a spokesperson quoted in The Times. In future, the Government intends to use the term “cis-gender” instead.

This, apparently, is to educate heteronormative women about their “privilege” – the fact that they can use the toilets, sorry “washrooms”, of their choice and access healthcare.

I think he misuses 'heteronormative' there, but the piece is good overall and well worth a read.

I should be careful here because a number of TERFS have been banned from social media for saying that a person with a penis is a man. So I won’t say that.

First few comments I saw though contained two people determinedly tying themselves in knots with “sex is a spectrum” nonsense whilst also agreeing that trans women just might have some unfair advantages in sport. So much effort going into trying square a circle - how about we stay as we are, and women can compete against women and men against men. We could have a trans categoryif there were enough athletes to compete. Suspect that won’t be acceptable though

It does feel like we're going through some sort of cultural revolution - a la China. Complete with the public shaming and disgrace of anyone who publicly disagrees. Any minute now I'm expecting Julie Bindel to be paraded in the street with a sign saying "Transwomen are Women" around her neck.

I keep waiting for the madness to end... but it hasn't. Powerful forces are at play here.

I recently forced myself to re-read that OJ article the other day and discovered that he didn't use the phrase "wrong side of history".

It's quite funny that nonetheless, that's the phrase that will ever be indelibly associated with him. Bit like Humphrey Bogart and "Play it again, Sam." (OK, not very like Humphrey Bogart.)
