I'm paraphrasing but I bloody love this article : link.medium.com/kYNzydhGkU

Fucking marvellous! And what wonderful timing given what has been going on for the last few weeks.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 15/02/2019 18:21

That's fantastic, thanks for posting it!

thatdamnwoman · 15/02/2019 18:21

Yes, she's absolutely right. Clinging ideologically to the left is a cage for women. I've heard Labour women whispering to each other for years, horrified at what they see happening yet too loyal to make a fuss.

The left is no less misogynistic than the right. Why should we be so scrupulous about not appearing on a platform with someone who believes abortion should be banned — someone with whom we can argue — when on the left we have Jeremy Corbyn declaring TWAW and threatening to erase women as a sex class.

You only have to look at the Neale Gibson debate earlier, with Gibson throwing TERF around as if it wasn't and insult and refusing to criticise those who posted the Burn a TERF poster to see how little Labour really cares for women. I write this as someone who has always voted Labour but probably won't again — or not until the wheel has turned.

Threewheeler1 · 15/02/2019 18:32

Thanks Orchid
I'm in total agreement. I'm waiting now for a woman/ women to enter the political arena from the sidelines and give us something to work with. Had enough of men and their politics.
That Neale Gibson response to those Manchester posters was confirmation of how much Labour dislikes women who won't fall in line.

User10fuckingmillion · 15/02/2019 18:32

I’m a proper socialist and I agree wholeheartedly with that article. It’s a different kind of misogyny, and less overt, but it’s still misogyny.
(Sort of) Beyond the trans debate, I’ve been reading The Second Sex recently and it’s only just occurred to me the extent to which men (even the nice, decent, respectful ones) still regard me as “Other”. It’s really starting to get to me- I feel angry a lot and can’t explain why to them because it sounds unreasonable.

Floisme · 15/02/2019 19:11

I'm another lifelong Labour voter who's beginning to despise the left. Not only are they throwing women to the wolves but they think they have the right to lecture us while they do it. That article sums it up my feelings very well.

Ereshkigal · 15/02/2019 19:19

Likewise, Tucker Carlson and co may be homophobic in the old Christian bible-basher sense, but every Tom, Dick, and Harry on the left is busy calling lesbians transphobic for declining to have sex with transwomen. I don’t care if your homophobia is cloaked in religious bigotry or a rainbow flag, you are not a friend to me.

Bloody brilliant.

Women will not be told who we can and cannot talk to. No man-beard on this planet controls who we work with. Make no mistake we know men outside of the left are not allies; they are resources and don’t you dare judge us for exploiting them.

THIS.

GGMummy3 · 15/02/2019 19:25

Feminism is virtually meaningless because it is required to tick every other box on the planet before it can address its true purpose of the liberation of women and girls.

Feminism...
It is the only movement in the world not allowed to centre itself in its activism, to accurately name its oppressors, and to accurately name itself.

I knew from the title this would be the magnificent Ani O'Brien.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 15/02/2019 19:34

Brilliant! I wished I was brave enough to post this on Facebook.

Ereshkigal · 15/02/2019 19:38

If you read this thread, Ani, Brava. Wine

Yeahnahyeah · 15/02/2019 19:41

Go Ani!!!

She's bang on.

welshgendercrit · 15/02/2019 19:57

Brilliant!

mammoon · 15/02/2019 20:06

Brilliant. Love this article and it's given me a lot to think about.

feministfairy · 15/02/2019 20:41

Well that was a great read! Well said Ani.

AdultHumanFemale2019 · 15/02/2019 21:01

Very thought provoking essay which has definitely captured some of my feelings on the subject. I'm absolutely sick of political tribalism. I'm currently still hanging on to my labour membership but I don't want to be confined by it. I want to be free to say what I think and talk/listen to & read anyone I'm interested in (including those I disagree with) without judgment from those on the left. When it comes to women's rights I am happy to support/work with anyone willing to fight for them (we may not agree on other issues but I can cope with that).

pachyderm · 15/02/2019 21:39

Great stuff. We have the most loathsome beardy shits in Ireland; self-righteous bullying misogynists calling women terfs and thinking they can dictate the terms of feminism to women. I'm aghast at the inability of young women to see through these arseholes.

PersonaNonGarter · 15/02/2019 21:48

The Left has always been more misogynistic than the Right. It’s all about jobs for men. Entitlement for men. Who cares about retail jobs? Caring jobs? Not Corbyn’s Labour. Their concern is manufacturing...

The Right expects cream to rise. Whatever shortfalls that may have, it is no surprise there have been two female prime ministers from the Right.

Illyria47 · 15/02/2019 21:52

Brilliant article Ani, I have posted this to my Facebook but I do have a small number of friends who would be sympathetic to her point of view anyway.

Racecardriver · 15/02/2019 21:57

There is a lot of truth in this. Feminism has failed to liberalise women. Yes women have more rights than they did fifty or a hundred years ago but that hasn’t translated into more freedom for the majority of them sadly.

MsMcWoodle · 15/02/2019 22:11

Yes. At least you can argue with men on the right. And you know where you are. And I'm an ex Green party member.
I think the sly manipulation is worse than anything. The left doesn't care about women. Never has. We've been used.

OlennasWimple · 15/02/2019 22:12

I'd love to know whether the Labour transwomen women's officers are expected to make the coffee and stuff the envelopes in the same way that other women's officers are

OtepotiLilliane42 · 15/02/2019 22:14

Just been talking to someone about the Women's Liberation Movement in 1970s New Zealand, and what a furious struggle it was to get men, and some women, to get what the hell it was all about.

Well Ani, you couldn't have made it more clear what the hell women are on about now, so bravo!

Barracker · 15/02/2019 22:17

Wow, that's magnificent.
It says everything I fail to put into words.

Superb.
