It's a terrible time to be a woman at the moment. A friend of mine just spotted a load of these posters in the centre of Manchester. It seems it's fine to incite people to commit violent actions towards women....

Yep, same fella.

www.thestar.co.uk/our-towns-and-cities/sheffield/sheffield-councillor-involved-in-escorts-business-axed-from-committee-1-9531382

He started hounding The Harlequin pub for hosting a women's rights meeting.

Melanippe · 15/02/2019 10:46

Replace terfs with black people, Jews, Muslims, gay people, or the disabled. Now would you say that?

Nope? Why not, mr labour councillor?

Because they see those groups as monolithically male?

Putitdownnow · 15/02/2019 10:53

The hatred for women is palpable

NotTerfNorCis · 15/02/2019 10:54

Interesting stuff beag.

"Once your faith, sir, persuades you to believe what your intelligence declares to be absurd, beware lest you likewise sacrifice your reason in the conduct of your life. In days gone by, there were people who said to us: "You believe in incomprehensible, contradictory and impossible things because we have commanded you to; now then, commit unjust acts because we likewise order you to do so." Nothing could be more convincing. Certainly anyone who has the power to make you believe absurdities has the power to make you commit injustices. If you do not use the intelligence with which God endowed your mind to resist believing impossibilities, you will not be able to use the sense of injustice which God planted in your heart to resist a command to do evil. Once a single faculty of your soul has been tyrannized, all the other faculties will submit to the same fate. This has been the cause of all the religious crimes that have flooded the earth."
Voltaire.

Seems appropriate in the current context.

Meanwhile, the lies about GC stickers hiding razor blades still abounds.

AncientLights · 15/02/2019 11:16

That Labour councillor Neale Gibsons didn't actually say it's how he feels about 'T*S' but I think we know it is. Hopefully, this will be spread far and wide and he'll no longer be on the council next time round.

thatdamnwoman · 15/02/2019 11:40

This is my response from Neale Gibson:

^The last thing I am doing is condoning violence towards Women its utterley outrageous that anyone would suggest that I am doing that.

My stance is that I condem the actions of anyone who supports violence towards any other persons, but I'm shocked at the verbal attacks on people who are already going through a very difficutl transition in their lives. While I support the rights of people to express their views condem all views that support or suggest an act of violence towards anyone.

I have seen posters from TERF's proposing violent acts towards Trans Women and I woiuld condem those too.*

I've asked him to supply evidence of posters threatening violence and death against members of the transgender community. We'll see if he can come up with anything more than Woman: adult human female.

I've asked him the obvious question: why doesn't he condemn incitement to burn TERFS. You can see from the way he so casually uses the word TERF that he's entirely bought the trans narrative.

I know I shouldn't be shocked that an apparently senior member of the Labour party is so happy to label women he disagrees with terfs, I know we should take this as their default position, but it still distresses me. I've never know Labour sink so low and be so blind.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 15/02/2019 11:45

History is very much repeating, it won't end well.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 15/02/2019 11:46

I have seen posters from TERF's proposing violent acts towards Trans Women and I woiuld condem those too.

But he explicitly hasn't condemned the poster advocating violence against "terfs". The opposite in fact. It's not like he was even tagged into the tweet - he has found the tweet and decided to excuse it on the basis that they are "expressing their feelings".

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 15/02/2019 11:46

I know we should take this as their default position, but it still distresses me.

It is distressing, but this hasn't just happened over night has it, it's been building for over a decade.

Bowlofbabelfish · 15/02/2019 11:53

I don’t think this will end well either.

FlyingOink · 15/02/2019 11:55

I have seen posters from TERF's proposing violent acts towards Trans Women and I woiuld condem those too.
This is an outright lie, though. Those posters don't exist.

Popchyk · 15/02/2019 11:59

I am sure that there must be men who identify as women in Sheffield who Mr. Gibson could employ as strippers in his strip club.

Surely Mr. Gibson who has such empathy could offer employment to these people? Who are women of course.

And yet I suspect that Mr. Gibson only offers employment to a certain "type" of woman.

Perhaps Mr. Gibson could clarify his position in this regard. Simple question first: "How many men who identify as women do you employ as strippers in your club?"

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 15/02/2019 12:25

"My stance is that I condem the actions of anyone who supports violence towards any other persons, but I'm shocked at the verbal attacks on people"

= I condemn advocating violence^^ but

I wouldn't have thought that sentence should have a "but" on the end of it Hmm

littlbrowndog · 15/02/2019 12:31

What is burning a terf then NEale if not violent

And slurring women with the word terf Neale

WeRiseUp · 15/02/2019 12:40

Has anyone claimed responsibility yet?

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 15/02/2019 12:41

No. Women stickering Market Street was however mentioned the previous day in this group.

No it's not incitement but an indication of how people feel about terfs

Fucking hell. Angry

Misogyny may not be a hate crime, but homophobia most definitely is.

A homophobic hate crime is:

“Any criminal offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice based on a person’s sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation.”
report-it.org.uk/homophobic_and_transphobic_hate_crime

I perceive this poster to be homophobic because:

a) the term 'Terf' is widely used as hate speech against lesbians
b) it is therefore inciting violence against lesbians for 'excluding' male bodies.
b) the phrase 'protect trans lives' used on a poster inciting violence against lesbians is homophobic propaganda, suggesting that lesbians are physically attacking trans people.

I also perceive the misogynist Labour councillor's comments to be homophobic, and motivated by hostility towards lesbians. Instead of condemning verbal or physical attacks on lesbians, he has himself chosen to use a lesbophobic slur in his tweet, which certainly gives the impression that he agrees with (rather than condemns) those who believe that lesbians should be burned because their sexuality excludes men.

An offence needs to be committed before this counts as a hate crime. Under the Public Order Act 1986, the use of 'threatening, insulting or abusive' words or writing to another person whereby that person is likely to believe that such violence will be used or it is likely that such violence will be provoked or is within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress thereby is an offence under Part 1, sections 4 (Fear or Provocation of Violence) and 5 (Harassment, Alarm and Distress).

NotTerfNorCis wrote - "Is it just me or does that symbol in the picture, with its black lines and sharp angles, look a little like a swastika?"

I think it is probably one of these sex/gender symbols :

Bowlofbabelfish · 15/02/2019 13:32

A label for everything!

To someone who has spent the last forty odd years trying NOT to be labelled I find this all very odd.

Just be you. You dont need this kind of extreme taxonomy. Be you. Dress how you want, have sex with whomever enthusiastically agrees. You remain Male or female because that’s immutable, but the rest is just your personality.

I fear we will all end up barcoded. IDpol .

beeyourself · 15/02/2019 14:19

This is pretty bad. I'm heading into Manchester tonight & now having second thoughts

AncientLights · 15/02/2019 15:19

Popchyk the only transwoman I knew in Sheffield actively demonstrated against strip clubs. But had transitioned later in life when the career was secure, so would hardly expect to be in a position to need to earn money by such means as titillating men.

VickyEadie · 15/02/2019 17:53

I've seen a few tweets on this of the 'No trans person would do this' (and - of course - suggestions it's a 'false flag' op) variety.

Astonishes me how a fair few people would have us believe that anyone and everyone who declares themselves 'trans' is automatically a good, harmless person.

Ereshkigal · 15/02/2019 18:29

I'm not sure Vicky, I think plenty of trans allies don't care whether it's true or not, they just want to deny it.
