Good source/article on why being trans critical is not homophobic?

Long time poster, recent name change following data breach last week.

Please can anyone direct me to a good article explaining why being trans critical is not homophobic? I am having a debate with a friend who is conflating the two, and I’d like to provide her with a reasoned explanation of the difference, and of why promoting trans ideology can actually be disguised homophobia.

I’ve been looking online but can’t find anything that’s compelling and accessible to someone who isn’t already ensconced in feminist theory (which my friend definitely isn’t).

🙏

Tbh, I think probably one of those testimonies from conservative Christian families in the US with little boys who liked dresses, dolls and frills and their parents tried to smack it out of them because of their homophobia but when they discovered transing, they allowed the boy to do the frilly thing because they could call him 'her' and save their blushes. I haven't got time to search one up now, but someone else may, and it does illustrate the overt homophobia in the ideology very well.

Sorry... I'm no good at this linking business Blush

Anything at all on the cotton ceiling.

Homosexual people are not homogenderal. The whole trans ideology refuses people the right to identify themselves and others by their biology and actively attempts to stigmatise and end the right of women to have sexual preferences that exclude men. Women defining themselves as 'lesbians' are now automatically being derided as t**fs at the extreme end, and many young lesbians don't use the word, using other terms to avoid harassment.

While at the same time, heterosexual men are proudly insisting that their straight sexual preference is lesbianism. So the only 'right' lesbians now are straight men, insisting that gay women 'get over' their gayness (although its absolutely not ok to suggest they do any 'getting over' themselves) in order to provide the sex these men feel entitled to.

It gets no more hideously homophobic than that.

Thanks Ignatius, I like the Jane Clare Jones blog but I think the tone may be a bit too militant for my friend - I’m trying to ease her in 🙂.

I have already given her the example of non gender conforming children being pushed into transing, rather than come out as gay.

Manikoutai I had a similar discussion with a gay friend recently. He has always been gender critical, but couldn't get past the idea that our (his and my) refusal to accept transgender ideology was exactly the same as the refusal to accept homosexuality in the old days. He is very concerned and confused as he doesn't want to be "oppressing" anybody.

I sent him the Jane Clare Jones article but he didn't respond so I'm guessing it didn't help!

I thought this one was good - it is quite a long read but an accessible one, and addresses (among other points) the conflation with homophobia.

Thanks HouseofMouse, I really enjoyed the Quillette article and will be sending it to a few friends. I kept thinking it had an Economist feel - until I realised it’s written by an Economist finance editor. It’s a good round up of all the recent issues.

Thanks Manikoutai. It’s particularly good for “beginners” to the issue I think, as it doesn’t assume you already know the arguments on either side.
