Apparently a woman spent 8 hours in a cell/being interviewed by the police for a "transphobic" Tweet along the lines of TWAW. Can't bring myself to buy the Mail tomorrow to check the details, but it may be taken up by other papers.

I can just picture SH now, writing a list.

Stepho is making a list
And checking it twice
Gonna find out
Who's naughty and nice.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 11/02/2019 13:23

"Would boris date a transwoman if he believes they are women ?*

Boris would shag a badger if it wore lipstick.

FloralBunting · 11/02/2019 13:25

MhairiV, stick around. Having your arse handed to you is a rite of passage on MN, and this one has been particularly velvet-gloved in comparison to some Grin

MhairiV · 11/02/2019 13:31

Thanks @Datun. I didn't expect to be the first to struggle with it but I was very interested to hear how others approach it and I guess I got my answers. I know my own views on this stuff, what I don't yet have is the armoury required to defend it with the force required. I want to discuss it with others but I've seen enough to know that if you're not well prepared, you just drown.

I'll not be changing my mind on the insidious and poisonous nature of the Mail anytime soon but as much as it pains me to admit, it's interesting having to confront one way in which it might actually be a useful tool. It's putting these stories before the eyes of those who might normally scream blue murder and run at speed from anything labelled as feminism - of any sort. I can grudgingly admit that's not bad.

Third result on Google when you type Daily Mail.

Sticking within a bubble of 'purity' as to opinions/sources is what has created this mess.

I've never shared the hatred shown on here for the DM and the weasley apologies of 'sorry for the link' just made me roll my eyes. If an article or point of view is interesting or relevant I couldn't give a stuff which paper/media source it is in.

The DM has a massive, varied readership, they get stories out which are then spoken about and debated, that is surely what the press are supposed to do?

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 11/02/2019 13:35

It's not actually 'just' feminism anymore.
It's rights and safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults, rights of homosexuals and rights of free speech.
The effects of this go beyond feminism and we are now seeing people speaking out because of it.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 11/02/2019 13:38

MhairiV when it was all fields round here I came into this section talking about cis privilege.. It went as well as might be expected. Grin

littlbrowndog · 11/02/2019 13:38

I read daily mail everyday on line

Still here 😂😂

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 11/02/2019 13:43

When I fist joined the site I was taken right down a notch and had my ego stripped right away.
I needed it though, you learn from it. Never enter an argument you only know basic details about😂.
Looking back I must have come across as a right arrogant Idiot.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 11/02/2019 13:43

Though they seem pleased with the donations they receive. I wonder where the money is coming from.

I haven’t cancelled my monthly donation to the guardian. I’m furious with them for choosing the appearance of being progressive over women’s rights but I still think they do other valuable work and have role to play in tackling other injustices.

MhairiV · 11/02/2019 13:44

It's more the framing of the stories I take issue with @RedDogsBeg. While there might be value in putting these stories before eyes of those who wouldn't otherwise see them, and in generating discussion, there's also the headline effect of dramatising for effect, and the demonisation and vilification of minorities and vulnerable groups, disingenuous wording, misinformation, and of course the actual barefaced lies. That too. The Mail might well do us a turn on this issue but it's a blimmin monster on most other subjects.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 11/02/2019 13:44

It's how I know people will join up to set the world to rights, but then stick around for years learning.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 11/02/2019 13:46

The Mail might well do us a turn on this issue but it's a blimmin monster on most other subjects

You are right, they might, but what are they going to say?
We are doing nothing wrong.

Needmoresleep · 11/02/2019 13:46

I'm not worried about you! More about the big American foundations who are in many ways responsible for this shit-show.

If they become too beholden, they run the risk of losing independence. At least the DM remains anchored to its readers.

hackmum · 11/02/2019 13:47

Boris would shag a badger if it wore lipstick.

Well, that's an image I won't get out of my head in a hurry. Grin

littlbrowndog · 11/02/2019 13:52

Mhairi
Not everyon3 who reads the mail are thickos
They can understand when the mail is writing shite
No one can tell you what to read same as you can’t tell me what to read

MhairiV · 11/02/2019 13:54

I think that's a dangerous way to see it @CaptainKirksSpookyghost. Discussions here have a wider audience than just the people who contribute and post. There may well be others like me who have the same questions and would like answers, but won't dip a toe in. "Taking people down a notch or two" and "stripping egos" is hostile and adversarial language. I can't see how that's helpful to anyone if what you want is greater awareness and understanding of the issues.

It's not a case of not having basic understanding of an argument, many people will have a perfectly reasonable grasp of it, they just might not be tuned in to the conventions and norms of this particular corner of the internet. If I learn anything from this it won't be that I made a mistake, I'll just remember those who took the time to set out their views in a patient and reasonable way and will endeavour to do the same.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 11/02/2019 13:59

I can't see how that's helpful to anyone if what you want is greater awareness and understanding of the issues.

But this site isn't for that, this site is for discussing anything.
People are doing their own research and thinking and finding their own way here, it's not my job to pander to hypothetical people.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 11/02/2019 14:01

We are not asking people to join us, we aren't some kind of cult.

We are also not a central hub for a movement.

People are seeing things with their own eyes and coming here off their own backs.

There is no "we".

TimeLady · 11/02/2019 14:02

The Daily Mail updates its website far more frequently than the other papers, which is the main reason I look at it throughout the day.

It's not hard to corroborate information elsewhere from other sources, but quite often you have to wait until the following day. The BBC's reporting of transgender issues has shocked me this last year - I used to scoff at people commenting on their biased reporting, but it's so true, as much by omission as anything. I don't even bother with them now as a reliable source.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 11/02/2019 14:05

needmoresleep ah fair enough! I was rather hoping I could be the new murdoch/soros/mercer/Bezos though with my fiver a month

Datun · 11/02/2019 14:05

That's the beauty of mumsnet membership being fairly diverse.

You will get people showing you sources that you would not normally look at. It's a real eye-opener.

(And actually makes you hate them all, equally!)

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 11/02/2019 14:07

So many people are here because TRAs closed down discussion on other sites. It has, quite accidently, created a place full of brilliant people that's packed with threads and resources.
It's created quite a force of different people in one place.
The idea to close discussion elsewhere sort of backfired, because it's now ALL here.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 11/02/2019 14:11

And every time the TRA's post about it, it sends more people here, everything a troll thread is linked to, more and more people come.
