Would you believe that in 2019 this fact makes the front page of the Herald?:
www.heraldscotland.com/news/17414078.legal-bid-to-allow-scots-to-choose-gender-will-be-rejected/

Also in the Guardian:
www.theguardian.com/society/2019/feb/07/new-scottish-census-bill-conflates-sex-and-gender-report

and the Times www.thetimes.co.uk/article/non-binary-sex-option-will-not-appear-on-next-census-7d86dks72
I'm hoping some kind soul will provide a share token.

Thanks to the hard work of many women it looks very much like a non-binary option will NOT be added to the mandatory sex question in the 2021 Scottish census. Hurrah!

Brilliant!

And also fucking ridiculous that this was ever a fight, but every single millimetre of movement creates precedent and momentum. Saluting every single campaigner.

boatyardblues · 07/02/2019 08:18

I am glad the committee listened to the issues raised in their evidence sessions and have arrived at this position.

Sightreading · 07/02/2019 08:23

That's great news. I am thankful to whoever linked to the debates about this in Holyrood where both sides put forward their case about changing this section of the census. I've lost the link, I don't suppose someone can point me in its direction again?

I watched with great interest and hope in my heart that sanity would prevail and it was a very calm and measured debate. Thank Fuck is all I can say. I was beginning to feel quite hopeless about living in Scotland as a woman. I hope that no one scuppers it. I'm also reminded again why I can't vote for the Greens come election time which I am truly sad about.

WokeNotBloke · 07/02/2019 08:24

Hallelujah

I think today is a good day to write to Scottish Ministers and local authorities about the school’s guidance that allows a 14 year old boy to share the girls’ changing area. We need to keep pushing 😊

Sightreading · 07/02/2019 08:25

boatyardblues have just seen that they were 'evidence sessions' rather than 'debates'. Must get my terminology right Smile

MillytantForceit · 07/02/2019 08:30

"Scotland says there are only 2 sexes"

....and men can wear skirts if they want to.

boatyardblues · 07/02/2019 08:31

That’s my take, nothing official. Different groups attended to state their POV, with the MSPs asking questions. No one was pitched against another group to duke it out.

andyoldlabour · 07/02/2019 08:32

As a famous person once said "This isn't the end, it is not even the beginning of the end, but it may be the end of the beginning".
Let us hope that what is happening in Scotland will spread to the rest of the UK.

Allyg1185 · 07/02/2019 08:35

MillytantForceit it's a KILT not a skirt

OldCrone · 07/02/2019 08:39

Vic Valentine in the Scotsman last August:
Recognising that some people are trans is an important part of challenging gender stereotypes – which are all rooted in the idea that the body you are born with defines who you are and who you can be.

Perhaps someone should introduce Vic to feminism.

OldCrone · 07/02/2019 08:43

Link to Vic's article in the Scotsman. Vic seems a bit clueless.

RepealTheGRA · 07/02/2019 08:59

How old is Vic and what colour is their hair?

Do we think they will grow up one day?

would ask what sex but don’t want to be accused of literal violence

AngryAttackKittens · 07/02/2019 09:04

I'm also reminded again why I can't vote for the Greens come election time which I am truly sad about.

I'd always have voted Labour, but in the past I wouldn't have been unhappy to see a Green win instead in many elections in a sort of next best thing kind of way. Environmental issues are important to me. Finding myself in a position where I have to actively oppose the Green party is a bit of a mindfuck, and as much as most of that is down to entryism I also hold the sensible people who ought to have known better responsible.

Also, a kilt is in fact a type of skirt, and admitting that tough manly men can wear skirts without their balls falling off* is kind of key to resolving this whole mess.

*Unless it's from cold, which is a "that's nobody's fault, not even the Romans" kind of deal.

The first evidence session from 6th Dec 2018 included Prof Rosa Freedman and Susan Smith from forwomen.scot and the video is here

Mistress the bill will go back to parliament for the next stage debate later in the month with the committee's recommendations. I assume they'll have to have good cause to overturn the recommendations, but that doesn't mean it won't happen! So, as was said at the FWS meeting last week, we have to keep on to our MSPs.

Notevenmyrealname · 07/02/2019 09:24

Yeahnahyeah
I love that. I’m one of the women who came in recently saying WTF?

Sightreading · 07/02/2019 09:42

BetsyMOO thanks for posting the link to the video of the evidence session again - much appreciated!

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 07/02/2019 09:52

Hurrah!

Bloody hell! I know I didn't sleep much last night but... is this for real? Pinch me....

MillytantForceit · 07/02/2019 10:50

"A kilt (Scottish Gaelic: fèileadh [ˈfeːləɣ]) is a type of knee-length non-bifurcated skirt..."

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilt

Back on topic, what comes over is the stunning arrogance of the Transie lobbyists, presuming to tell clinicians and other professionals what raw data information is and isn't of value to them.

Supposing they get their way, all comparisons over time including pre-trans recognition figures will be instantly invalid.

BetsyM00 · 07/02/2019 10:59

Finally got a share token for the Times article:

’restricting the compulsory sex question to male and female answers “means that, once again, non-binary people like myself will not be able to answer the question correctly and honestly”’

It's astonishing that someone can even say this without being quietly escorted from the room.

What IS these people's answer to how do we supply sex-based provision of medical care, maternity care, etc, or monitor eg cancer rates, life expectancy, work based diseases, mental health problems etc. if you can't categorise by sex?

They're talking like a bloody child.
