Members attending this year’s RCN Congress in Liverpool will vote on a number of important resolutions that will look to improve health and life chances for many vulnerable people.
The resolutions proposed include lobbying governments across the UK to decriminalise prostitution, end period poverty and invest resources to deal with rising child poverty...

It could generate more money than the lottery. Nurses could then be paid 40k a year

yeah, cos the way forward is clearly to accept that men will always pay for sex with unwilling women, so we may as well profit from it. No point helping women to have autonomy over their bodies and choice of sexual partners. I mean YAWN - amirite?

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 04/02/2019 08:46

Sorry, is the person above claiming that these nurses either work as prostitutes or as maids for prostitutes while keeping up their professional registrations? In a 'cottage' in London? I call bullshit. They'd lose their pin for bringing the profession into disrepute for starters.

Also, hardly any nurses earn 23k. That's in your first year, and assuming you do no night shifts. Most nurses earn quite a bit more than that. Should definitely be paid more though.

Popchyk · 04/02/2019 08:55

I have another solution.

Male nurses, who seem apparently to be able to live on a nurse's salary without selling sex to sleazebags, could instruct their hapless female colleagues on budgeting.

Iolar · 04/02/2019 09:02

There is nothing in a nurse's contract of employment outlawing sex work. Teachers on the other hand have to sign up to an agreement that they will not undertake work in the sex trade.

Ifonlyus · 04/02/2019 09:07

NHS brothels could just be the way forward. Clean sterile, attach them to the sexual health services and offer screenings at the same time. It could generate more money than the lottery. Nurses could then be paid 40k a year.

Ugh, that's grim. Seriously? Is this suggestion fueled by some nurse fantasy or something?

You want there to be a job role where females work as nurses/prostitutes out of the same location. And not only that, the government will take most of the extra money but top up the salary of the nurses a little? Won't the male nurses be jealous or will they sell their bodies too to top up their salary?

birdsdestiny · 04/02/2019 09:08

Yes surely the male nurses will have a case for discrimination.

birdsdestiny · 04/02/2019 09:09

Or does your faux concern for the poverty of nurses only extend to female nurses.

And when she wants a fortnight in Japan? Hotels, flights, food and entertainment? She should do without rather than degrade herself?

Mycathatesme · 04/02/2019 12:29

So now they are not doing sex work 'just to survive', they are now doing it to pay for holidays in Japan. Can you make up your mind?

NothingOnTellyAgain · 04/02/2019 12:29

Hold on

What?

Fortnight in Japan? Where has that come from :/

Surely any woman who wants a fortnight in Japan can simply spend time at one of the many spa/cottage by women for women locations and earn £80squiftymillion quid by doing not much of anything?

It does beg the question of why any women in the UK are in any other types of employment really. Sounds like paradise.

Although I question "by women for women" when it's actually for men Grin

NothingOnTellyAgain · 04/02/2019 12:31

In your NHS brothel plan

Are the women who sell sex the same as the nurses
Or are they different groups of women?

Will men be allowed to request nurses / women in nuses uniforms?

What impact do you think it will have on the hospital generally, of having men who are there with the intention of buying sex, wandering around?

NothingOnTellyAgain · 04/02/2019 12:34

There was a case a few years back where a woman went to prison for failing to protect her children.

She was a prostitute and on the way in / out the men she was seeing were sexually abusing her kids.

Terrible story.

Thing that stood out for me:

There was no expression of surprise that the men who were seeing her were abusing her kids
There was no mention of trying to seek them and prosecute for child sexual abuse

Just adding this FWIW with PP thinking intriducing lots of men who are they to buy sex into hospitals which contain lots of vulnerable people including children and where there is likelihood of people being unconsious / drugged and not with it etc.

There is already a problem with patients and staff (usually female) being sexaully assaulted in hosps (usually by men).

I see no reason not to increase this risk?

I mean there are holdays in Japan at stake, after all.

Popchyk · 04/02/2019 12:39

Look, I mentioned the one stop shop for the NHS/brothel as an absolute piss-take of the arguments being put forward by the 'let's decriminalise pimps and punters' lobby.

I didn't for one second think that even Iolar would take it seriously.

Christ, what a time to be alive.

MagicMix · 04/02/2019 12:43

I smell a john on this thread. They usually turn up when someone mentions prostitution.

Iolar · 04/02/2019 12:43

The sexual health centres are most often detached from hospitals so no worry about children. I go to Dean Street Express. Very easy to get an appointment. Mostly gay men and gay nurses.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 04/02/2019 12:51

Is that the best business model though Iolar?

The beds are in the wards.

Mixing it up sounds by far the most efficient way.

Nurese can see punters during their breaks in free beds, just pull the curtains round.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 04/02/2019 12:53

"Mostly gay men and gay nurses."

This is nearly as good as the Japan comment Grin

Can you explain what you mean?
You mean the clients are mostly gay men and the nurses are also gay men?

Iolar · 04/02/2019 12:55

Verily. It is like a Carry On film. Gay men everywhere you look.

The sexual health centres are most often detached from hospitals so no worry about children.

As a sexual health and contraceptive nurse practitioner, I can tell you that a huge proportion of our patients are children. Many of whom are involved in sexual exploitation. Then there’s our other vulnerable patients, the ones attending after being sexually assaulted. The women in horrendous domestic abuse relationships needing contraception ( their partners quite like to keep them pregnant). The sex workers who suffer some of the worst health inequalities in the UK.
If you think we just sit and screen for infections all day long, you are hugely ill informed.
Maybe I’ll send them all into clinic room four, aka our pop up knock in shop after consultation.
