Warwick Lecturers write letters of condemnation

Some of the lecturers at Warwick University have written letters condemning the early reinstatement of the vile little scumbags who sent misogynistic and racist messages about women.

This is the first one, but apparently there are more to follow. Will post as I see them.

Imagine if a group of people would write similarly horrifying things about transgender students.

FlawedAmazon · 02/02/2019 01:34

Almost 31,000 signatures on the petition! Bloody fantastic!

It is so good to see men protesting as much as women because there are some men who think jokes about rape are a valid form of entertainment.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 02/02/2019 07:29

I signed the petition. Not that Warwick will stop throwing women under a bus but, hey.

Fuck you, Warwick.

Helmetbymidnight · 02/02/2019 07:38

The lecturers know this may will be a fight for their jobs - this is surely shattering warwicks reputation. It’s very very damaging.

OTOH, Warwick has many foreign students and this story might not reach their families/countries.

Helmetbymidnight · 02/02/2019 07:40

(Im Warwick grad too- and now really ashamed to be associated with the place)

Ifonlyus · 02/02/2019 09:15

Just for a moment I wondered whether Warwick might actually now be a safer place for young women to study, assuming they'd have put in place measures to create a culture shift at the University in light of what happened last year.

The links the VC provides in his statement Q and A lead to pathetic online courses on dignity and respect, with wooly text that seems to amount to 'be nice'

Popchyk · 02/02/2019 09:56

Did these young men face a police investigation?

Does anybody know?

Just feels like those words that those men posted were actually criminal (and this is in the week that Harry the Owl was warned by Humberside police about retweeting a limerick).

FlawedAmazon · 02/02/2019 10:03

There's no mention of a police investigation. I get the impression they were just going to quietly let the little gits go back to their lectures as if nothing had happened.

How much do you bet that the same ones who snigger about rape would be demanding people like Germaine Greer be no-platformed in order to keep a 'safe space' for students?

FlawedAmazon · 02/02/2019 10:55

I'd bet everything I have on it Juells

I was wondering re police investigation. The statement reads like they police themselves.

Dyrne · 02/02/2019 11:03

The police released a statement that they investigated at the time but “no criminal offences were found”. They specifically mention that they “considered the wishes of those affected by the communication” when deciding not to push further.

Given what has now come out about the university’s investigation/interrogation of the poor women, I wonder whether there wa an element of “come on now girls, it wasn’t that bad, only banter - you don’t want to ruin their lives over this, do you?”

Boyskeepswinging · 02/02/2019 11:08

Germaine Greer was a Professor at Warwick. I think she's retired now

FlawedAmazon · 02/02/2019 11:14

Thanks Dyrne

I guess they weren't Humberside police, then.

Also, if you were one of the girls involved you surely would want it to just go away? Not be dragged through more humiliating interviews questioning your sexual history, and having your name associated with such vile insults. If it happened to you, and you were put through the wringer, as the girl described, wouldn't you believe that the consequences for the men involved would be proportionate?

TheElementsSong · 02/02/2019 11:19

Oh, and signed the petition.

The extra bit I don't like is how the complainants report that 'they had to justify why they were upset', and then had to have their sexual history examined, as if they were the ones on trial.

Old story. Men threaten serious levels of violence, a specific set of behaviours almost uniquely used against women and girls. Attitude is 'put up and shut up, what are you complaining about and anyway you exist to be used'. The contrast with the trans movement would be unbelievable except that it demonstrates exactly the same attitude. Sick.

Whereas I totally agree this sort of "banter" should be punished, I fear it will not be long before someone transphobe or a "I fucking hate men" message sees a female student booted out. It's only a matter of time now. These were immature young men who posted absolutely vile stuff indicative of huge misogyny, but I don't personally believe they really were going to gang rape anyone, however that is obviously subjective. It has to be this and not "unacceptable opinions" that the ban focuses on.

FlawedAmazon · 02/02/2019 13:39

Their 'banter' was misogynistic and racist and targeted specific girls. Those girls should not have to live in fear of bumping into the perpetrators at their place of learning. And how do you know they weren't planning to rape? If these comments hadn't been addressed, who knows how far they were willing to push the boundaries?

There's a rally on campus at 12:30pm Wednesday (full details can be found by searching "Reclaim Our University Demo #ShameOnYouWarwick, on Facebook) if anyone is local/wants to travel to show their support. Open to all, not just current stundents/alumni
