I've never started a thread in feminism chat before but I am an avid follower and occasional poster.

I often post about farming related stuff on other parts of Mumsnet and its rare that my 'farming world' and my 'Mumsnet world' collide but I've found the following discussion on The Farming Forum really interesting do thought I would share.

thatdamnwoman ive no doubt the assumption is annoying, but I don't think letting people know your partner is a woman is on a par in conversation is the same as announcing one is a pan demi asexual femme-boi.

That farming thread is wonderfully laid back and sanguine. A whole lot of “eh? why is this even relevant?”

To most farmers, the biggest question is, will the work get done? How you dress, communicate, shag etc is totally irrelevant.

as a lesbian I'd love to never have to come out again, but most weeks I encounter people who assume I'm straight and I have to go through the whole tedious 'Actually, my partner is female' number yet again.
thatdammwoman Personally I try never to assume sexuality, but that's because I have non-existent gaydar and have made some seriously embarrassing mistakes in the past!
Having said that, I'msurpised that people still automatically think that everyone is straight like them. What narrow views of the world they must have.
