Essex Library transgender upset.

Essex County Council removes 'bigoted' transgender image www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-47064138

I agree that this isn’t an ideal picture at all, but in fairness I’m not sure what is.
My problem isn’t with people being upset about it but with this quote: Another said: "The depiction is not only awful but 'man, woman or transgender' is an extremely ignorant choice of genders."

Ffs.

Apparently the picture of the transgender person showed them removing a wig.

Somehow they forgot to consult the woke before printing.

I would have assumed the problem with the image is the fact they are scratching their head which signifies uncertainty; but I guess we all see it differently.

teawamutu · 30/01/2019 21:56

Damn, I suppose it'll be recalled now and they used the word 'woman' and everything.

VashtaNerada · 30/01/2019 22:01

Shock That is really awful though! Can’t believe no-one checked it before it was printed.

NoseringGirl · 30/01/2019 22:07

When I first looked at the image, I thought it was someone scratching their head in confusion rather than removing a wig Blush
Either way, I can understand why people wouldn't be happy with it. I do wonder what a better easy read image would be though. I can't imagine one that wouldn't cause offence? There's always the male/female symbol but not sure if that would be clear enough for easy read.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 30/01/2019 22:12

Its not possible to not cause offence.

ADropofReality · 30/01/2019 22:12

"It feels to me like Essex County Council is not as safe as it should be, because their own consultations are portraying a negative gender stereotype," she added.

That word "safe" does not mean what you think it means, Zoe.

A spokeswoman for the council said: "This image was specifically chosen to help communicate with people with learning disabilities.

"It was supplied by an organisation called Inspired Services, who work with people with learning disabilities to produce images for the Government and NHS England for easy read publications.

So amazingly enough, TRAs, not everything in this world is a calculated insult aimed at you.

This is the sort of thing Humberside Police need to investigate. I know Essex is "down south" and nowhere near Humberside, but when's that ever stopped them?

ChattyLion · 30/01/2019 22:13

I can’t believe the balance of outrage here.
What is more important to the public good out of these two issues:

A) Company who make easy read visual versions of official documents for people with low literacy, get a social media bollocking for showing a person removing a wig when they wanted to illustrate the word ‘transgender’. (What would have been an acceptable image btw..?)

Vs

B) Essex Council is very likely closing about half of its public Libraries.

FFS!!

*(The Wig pic is on the public consultation document about these closures.)

It could be someone knocking the top of their head, as a percussion instrument.

Why do they need to know anyway?

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 30/01/2019 22:27

I'm gender critical and I the images are offensive.

Are the views of any particular "gender" going to stop ESSEX CC closing the libraries I wonder?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 30/01/2019 22:28

I look more like the trans than the woman pic.

ChesterGreySideboard · 30/01/2019 22:47

As said above people are pissing and bitching about it not showing all possible gender options and missing that they are going to close the libraries.

What picture could they use?

Zoe O’Connell is indicative of wider issues in the Liberal Democrat Party.

VashtaNerada · 31/01/2019 02:23

I agree that the library closure is the important thing but I think it’s really indicative of the patronising attitude towards people who require an easy read version. As pp have said there is absolutely no way (without being ludicrously offensive) of clearly showing a trans person in a small drawing. The pictures don’t help anyone here. It also shows how clumsy they’re being with gender identity and that they don’t really know why they’re asking the question (presumably to see if trans people’s views are being heard as well as a good mix of male/female views but if they really want to know that they’d realise that the options don’t quite tally with how many trans people define so they’d be ticking the male/female boxes anyway. The ‘politically correct’ question which would tell them what they want to know would be more along the lines of “do you consider yourself to be trans or to have had a trans history?”).

Those images are idiotic and I can see the offence taken. Everyone can work out which box they tick without being shown some stupid image next to it. Every other single form I have filled in doesn't have a picture next to the boxes.

Bittermints · 31/01/2019 06:38

You are presumably aware that Aspie is specifically referring to the selfie placed online by Liz the Glitch in response to having spent time in the same room as some gender critical women. Said selfie was greeted with enthusiasm in some quarters as empowering.

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 31/01/2019 06:42

Company who make easy read visual versions of official documents for people with low literacy

This is an admirable aim, but low literacy is normally not to the extent that you cannot read at all. And there is little chance that someone with no reading comprehension would work out that this was meant to represent a transgender person. And how do they use pictures for other questions? What if someone has low numerical literacy? Will they have a picture of people representing various age brackets?
I think it is unlikely that someone with zero reading skills would be filling in a non-essential form in the first place.

Datun · 31/01/2019 07:06

Its not possible to not cause offence

Agree. As evidenced by someone taking exception to the suggestion of a transwoman's own 'empowering selfie.'

There is no way to accurately portray a trans person in pictures without offending.
