I thought this was just brilliant.

Love the fact that these ladies have formed their own climbing group - they're not young, skinny or wearing £100's worth of 'technical' clothing.

And climbing in their dresses! Fantastic achievements.

AnyOldPrion · 26/01/2019 21:55

How lovely. Thanks for sharing.

How wonderful to see those group of women looking so happy at their achievement. They stand with a long list of women in mountaineering, including this pioneer in New Zealand, Freda du Faur.
But Freda had advantages these women didn't, which makes their sucess all the more remarkable.

And also this on TradeMe. The photograph on the book cover is priceless!

I love that. I will recycle this article every time someone posts "but trousers are so much more practical"

Mner2019 · 27/01/2019 08:14

Awesome!

And it's always a man who says that, isn't it? Grin

No, not at all. I was referring to posters on here who say it.

Barracker · 27/01/2019 14:05

It's brilliant as an achievement.

But for goodness sake, it's a daft leap to make that climbing a mountain with a heft of fabric flapping around your shins is as safe as doing it in modern climbing garb.

This is why the women remove their skirts at the topmost, dangerous part of the climb - to prevent accidents caused by the impractical skirts.

There's no question that the skirts increase risk. They do. It's simply a choice the women have made during the less risky parts of the climb despite the safety implications.

"As they climb, the women wear thermal sweat suits under their traditional clothing. Only in the last part of the climb up to the top do the women remove their skirts, to prevent accidents."

Noone is arguing that running the London marathon wearing a foam rubber Mr Blobby suit is as safe or easy as running it in athletic kit, are they?
It can be done, and if it is done, the achievement is all the greater because the garb has disadvantaged the wearer.

MargueritaPink · 27/01/2019 14:53

Oh blah, blah, blah. I got about 3 words in to your lecture and gave up.

I shall use it every time there are silly comments like "you can't cycle wearing a skirt" or the equally silly one on here about cold knees.

Barracker · 27/01/2019 16:24

You carry on mate.
Bring back the crinoline, I say.

MargueritaPink · 27/01/2019 16:52

I'm not your mate - in any sense of that word. Although given "mate" is usually a word used to refer , often in a dismissive way, to a man your use of it here is interesting.

Purplewithgreenspots · 27/01/2019 17:27

I thought they were lovely. I don’t care if they took their skirts off at the top. They still wore them most of the way up. Also, they are neither young nor stick thin, which I found very encouraging. I see no way that I can be either young or stick thin, but I look forwards to being able to say ‘this girl can’. Grin

Barracker · 27/01/2019 17:31

I haven't the faintest idea who you are or why you are being so rude?
You're reading rather a lot into a casual use of the word mate. Perhaps don't project so much? I thought it was rather friendly of me given your 'blahblahblahlecture' rude post.

You can relax, I have absolutely no interest in your own personal skirt wearing choices.

I'm sorry if my explaining that the cholitas take their skirts off for safety reasons during the dangerous part of the climb has somehow put a spanner in your plans to recycle this article every time someone posts "but trousers are so much more practical"
Because the women do in fact whip off their skirts during the climb when it gets too dangerous and complete the climb in trousers. Because trousers are so much more practical. And they don't actually want to die climbing a mountain just for wearing a skirt, presumably.

Anyway. Probably best for you to stick to reading only the first three words of posts that contradict you.

Barracker · 27/01/2019 17:33

I think they're great too purplewithgreenspots

They've achieved a tremendous thing, AND done most of it in less than practical wear. I salute their achievements!
