I spotted this and wanted to share another great article on why we women will keep fighting against erasure.

Fantastic article. It sums up the issues perfectly.
I do think it is undermined though by using an image of Caster Semenya to illustrate the issue with women's sports. Semenya isn't male. She's female with an intersex condition, if I understand correctly so it's not a case of a male competing against women.

StarsAndWater · 21/01/2019 18:33

I suspect Medium won't allow the article to stay up long. Not with an actual picture of the ballwaxer on show.

StarsAndWater · 21/01/2019 18:35

Just realised my two posts make it sound like the person in the first post is the same one referenced in the second, which I imagine most of you will know it's not!

AspieAndProud · 21/01/2019 18:43

Is JY the same person who demanded a ball waxing by a Muslim? I thought that was a second Canadian creep.

Also agree that Semenya shouldn’t be there. Intersex and transgender are two different things.

Bowlofbabelfish · 21/01/2019 18:51

Good article, with as noted above the case of Castor Semenya. Semenya has a defined intersex condition and I think conflating that with transgender is incorrect. Semenya has never intentionally cheated - whether she should compete against women is a separate question and would need medical scrutiny to see and quantify her possible advantages. I don’t think including her here is helpful.

Semenya is a one off case and should be handled as such - this isn’t the same thing as men cheating by entering women’s sports.

MeteorShower · 21/01/2019 18:53

Shame about Caster Semenya being used to illustrate an otherwise good point. Semenya is an intersex female isn't she? Not a man.

riotlady · 21/01/2019 18:58

To be honest as a rape victim (I don’t like the term survivor, rape is a crime not a natural disaster) I’m sick to the bloody gills of being used as an example in arguments against trans people.
I don’t speak for all rape survivors/victims but I wish people would let us speak for ourselves instead of putting words in our mouths.

FreezerBird · 21/01/2019 19:04

It's a real shame Semenya's picture is there as otherwise I think I'd share that. I really don't want to with that inaccuracy as I think it undermines the article a bit and I suspect would end up being the focus of discussion.

Great article though; very succinct.

Badstyley · 21/01/2019 19:11

I think the problem for lesbians is not so much unexpected penis, because ya know, we can tell what sex a person is, but the penis being expected, and refusal resulting in excommunication from the community, threats and abuse, or actual violence.

GrinitchSpinach · 21/01/2019 19:12

Well the author of the piece is a rape survivor, so she is speaking for herself.

The example used comes from a real incident. Nobody is speaking for you, they are speaking for the woman concerned who raised the issue herself.

AspieAndProud · 21/01/2019 19:19

I thought there were two creeps, JY, who has made a career of persecuting female waxers in general, and a second creep who tried the same, was offered a waxing and then turned it down because he specifically wanted a Muslim to do it.

The fact that social media protects these creeps makes it difficult to tell how many of them there are.

teawamutu · 21/01/2019 19:38

Really excellent article.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 21/01/2019 19:46

I think there are two, however, I think JY also targeted immigrant women (I think I read somewhere that the women were poor and immigrants, but I might be misremembering), and he is extremely racist against Muslims.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 21/01/2019 19:47

It is a real shame that the author made the Caster Semenya mistake. Great article otherwise.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 22/01/2019 08:31

Excellent article. The version I read had the mention of Caster Semanya edited out, which is right. There was no reason to drag Semanya into this mess.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/01/2019 09:47

She has now removed Caster Semenya from the article and apologised for her research error!

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 22/01/2019 10:16

Oh good!

Bowlofbabelfish · 22/01/2019 10:57

Excellent - important to be factual.

Also noting the ability to accept and remove an error in good faith. Not a virtue the other side has for sure ... Grin

Went to follow her on twitter, but looks like she's deleted her account. Or someone else has had it deleted.
