2020 Democratic presidential candidates’ positions on sex-based rights

GrinitchSpinach · 19/01/2019 15:37

As the 2020 election circus gets underway (God help us) I wanted to make a thread to collect information on the declared or potential candidates’ positions on sex-based rights.

I am very concerned that uncritical support for the erasure of sex-based rights may have become the new Democratic orthodoxy while no one was paying much attention, and that this will be wielded as an effective wedge by the GOP to divide the left and center just when our entire democracy needs urgently to focus on expelling Trump and his enablers.

I hope it’s ok to put this here. There are other more US-heavy forums, but Mumsnet feels like my spiritual home, and I know there are at least a few other Americans here. Grin

“We wouldn’t need to talk about bathrooms at all if we acted like adults, washed our hands and minded our own business instead of trying to clock others. Going by track record, I’d feel safer in a bathroom with a trans woman than a powerful male executive any day of the week”. I would have immediately asked why should a woman have to share with either category (ignoring that no one has suggested that such powerful male executives should be in women’s bogs) but she gets a free reign and adoration from the left and if the right attack then they’re bigoted anyway.

I’m a bloke. Shouldn’t be so invested as it doesn’t impact me much in reality. Men have kids though. They have daughters. I don’t currently but still horrified about the state of affairs. It’s like we’ve went backwards and you ignored basic science. Like people who think the earth is less than 10 thousand years old or flat earthers who think we live on a coffee table with a lamp that moves across day to day

I don't like the name-calling, and I think AOC has several interesting things to say, actually (not on this topic).

But she's not really relevant to this thread, as she is ineligible to run for president this cycle.

It won’t go down well here but I’m probably more in favour of Trump than Clinton. Her Bill is seriously worse on the sexual assault front and whilst she’s not personally to blame she ferociously defended him and tried to ruin his victims. I’m not just talking about womanising either. Look up Jeffery Epstein. Our Prince Andrew was in deep too.

As for the abortion thing that always happens under a Republican government. It flips and flops continuously. I serIously doubt Trump cares on a personal level. He’s too selfish to give a shit. He was Democrat the majority of his life prior to running for Presidency

Caucho · 02/02/2019 23:55

We’re not name calling unless you believe repeating what someone has said verbatim is somehow wrong. It’s not a hatchet job. People are free to like her or not. Defend her if you wish but the reason why people are turning against the ‘lefties’ is that you consider someone reposting a tweet of someone they themselves made as being ‘name calling’.

OK Grinitch Sorry. Will stay on topic

SignMeUp · 03/02/2019 00:15

I reported myself asking to remove the bad word. Agree it was un-called for

GrinitchSpinach · 03/02/2019 00:34

Thanks, SignMeUp! I appreciate that.

Caucho it was SMU's characterization of AOC as a "Congresswoman dumbass" to which I objected.

It doesn't matter in the end because it's not on-topic. If you would like to create a thread about AOC or Hillary or Bill Clinton, I encourage you to do so. None of them is running for president in 2020.

DH and I do have young daughters, so this stuff is very personal for me. I am glad to see men taking an interest. Everyone's mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters will be affected by the proposed legislation in both the UK and the US.

Fair enough Grinch. I thought you were having a go at me. I have nothing against Cortez personally and it’s low if she’s attacked in that manner. I do disagree which much of her politics though and criticism seems to be off limits on the left which is worrying. She has obviously gets shit from republicans and Fox News but seems to be immune. I won’t personally criticise her. Don’t know her after all but absolutely reserve the right to disagree and take the piss out of anything she says in a political context. All politicians make a decision to be in the public eye and she doesn’t seem to refrain from telling people what to think. Massive media junkie but then that’s politics

Just getting back to this to clarify. I did not call AOC a "dumba...".

I was referring to the tweet by a trans...woman who called her a congress...woman. The correct term is Congresswoman. I thought it was ironic, given the policing of language amongst this crew.

I think it said" that's Congresswoman, (comma) dumba.."

I did not call her a name, but I asked MN to delete the bad word. They said they could only delete the whole post.
Now, back to the issue. Sorry for the derail

GrinitchSpinach · 07/02/2019 21:34

Sorry SMU, I must have misread. Can't go back to check now.

On topic, it looks like Amy Klobuchar is going to announce this weekend. I almost hesitate to go looking for what she's said on the topic. It's getting depressing to see candidate after candidate embrace gender identity ideology blithely, without regard to the effect on female people [and Monitors, I include female people who identify as trans in that number.]

Have we covered Ilhan Omar's thing this week yet? I'll have to go search.

Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota (declared):

A leader for LGBTQ equality in the U.S. Senate, Senator Klobuchar is an original cosponsor of the Equality Act, crucial federal legislation that would finally guarantee explicit, permanent protections for LGBTQ people under our nation's existing civil rights laws. She also recently spoke out against the Trump-Pence discriminatory ban on transgender troops.

Original cosponsor, eh?

I have also come to the sad conclusion that none of the dems will TRANS/gress. Who are the candidates who will do the least harm?

Certainly NOT Joe Biden. His foundation is now in collaboration with "Gender Spectrum". Doesn't he have a lesbian daughter? Too stupid to read the fine print probably.

I think the US is ready for a lesbian like Sharice Davids to run as vice prez. twitter.com/RepDavids
She'll be reading the fine print. She's keeping a very low profile and doing her job for Kansas. She's also a kick-boxing champ and wears comfortable clothes (sorry)

I also have a fair amount of trust in Elizabeth Warren

So Warren/Davids ticket?

GrinitchSpinach · 17/02/2019 13:06

Gillibrand going all in for genderism:

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) reportedly said she would support for federal recognition of a third gender Friday at a campaign event in New Hampshire.

The senator, who is running for president in 2020, told a room of LGBTQ activists that she would support a third designation of "X" at the federal level for those not identifying as a man or woman, according to CBS News.

"Yes," Gillibrand said when asked if she would support such a designation at the federal level, according to CBS, which noted that she received applause from activists for her quick answer.

BettyDuMonde · 17/02/2019 13:10

I wouldn’t object to ‘x’ as long as birth sex was also recorded for all statistical records (especially crime) and it didn’t allow XY people access to spaces for xx people.

GrinitchSpinach · 17/02/2019 13:20

SignMeUp I like Warren and think she is more sincere than most politicians. However she has very much swallowed the transactivist line that genderism is "the right side of history."

I think she feels very guilty for having dealt with the Native American heritage stuff in the wrong way in the past, and is determined to listen to others to find out what the "right way" is on this issue. Too bad, since she does actually have experience of living in our society as a woman (but not as a Native American), and as a reportedly brilliant law professor should be able to see the consequences of eliminating women and girls as a sex class for civil rights under the law.

T news sources were somewhat disappointed in Harris' response to their recent questions on gender identity ideology. I think she is most likely to try to walk the line between not pissing them off and not making their demands a priority. (Of course this won't work; they are professionally pissed-off, but this hasn't yet played out in the real national spotlight).

I never understood why Biden was so popular with many Dems. I was just a kid during the Thomas hearings and I still remember how awful he was to Anita Hill. Add in all the photos of him touching women who are clearly uncomfortable, and the general sort of slick politician manner...he would be near the bottom of my list. Shudder.

Looks like Pete Buttigieg will announce this week. He is gay and 37 and seems to be a fully onboard with current genderist orthodoxy.

More info on what Gillibrand said:

www.cbsnews.com/news/kirsten-gillibrand-2020-democratic-contender-backs-third-gender-classification-at-federal-level/

So the question was about birth certificates as well as driver's licenses, and the X would replace birth sex notation rather than supplement it.

"No Democratic candidate is going to break ranks on this."

^ We are lost here, lost. It's a horrible position to be in. You have the Democrats, who bow and scrape to the trans, and the Republicans, who just straight up hate women.

Feel sorry for the feminists of America who might have to join the MAGA gang to protect their sex-based rights but it's the only way.

Like my sex based right to abortion? or to not have my pussy grabbed by strangers, or my children shot at school? And I'm white. So I don't get to deal with all of that PLUS a racist administration and biased police force.

So no, thank you, will never vote Trump . The dems are playing by the same wanky side as all the "progressive" parties in the UK but the difference is as far as I know we still haven't had to deal with a Karen White situation.

Representative Beto O'Rourke of El Paso, TX.

Senate Candidate Beto O’Rourke received thunderous applause for his answer poised by a trans youth during the packed Dallas town hall held on March 29th.

Beto answered by specifically condemning SB6, one of many transgender bathroom bills introduced in 2017 by Republican Texas extremists targeting the most vulnerable, transgender children.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana.

www.out.com/news/2019/3/12/pete-buttigieg-calls-war-trans-americans-end

Pete Buttigieg has once again called on federal lawmakers to pass the Equality Act.

Speaking at one of the back-to-back town halls CNN organized at the South by Southwest festival in Austin on Sunday, the South Bend, Indiana mayor-turned-Democratic presidential hopeful reaffirmed his support for the Equality Act, which, if passed by Congress and signed into law, would extend existing federal nondiscrimination protections for women and people of color to LGBTQ+ people, as well. He also spoke out against what he calls “the war on trans Americans” that terrorizes trans children, even in their own schools.
