Just that really. He is retiring shortly and women's sport will miss someone who championed it.

Andy murray is a credit to dunblane and to scotland as well as the rest of the uk. He has had an amazing career and im sorry hes had to bow out due to his hip. His mum must be very proud of him indeed

macaroniandpizza · 11/01/2019 20:59

His mum was at the kings theatre in glasgow the same night we were for the panto, she got a very loud cheer when it was announced she was in attendance

FlagFish · 11/01/2019 21:00

I love Andy!

FloralBunting · 11/01/2019 21:03

As a mother to a son I am fairly desperate to raise as this kind of man, I have now gone from cool and standoffish to blubbering mumsy wreck.

AnyFucker · 11/01/2019 21:33

FB Smile (with you there)

MaryGubbins · 11/01/2019 21:39

I came to see if there was a thread here as I hoped we’d be appreciating andy’s “every-day feminism.” I think he is a very level headed man.

He is also a survivor of the dunblane school shooting and grew up in its shadow. I admire his dignified silence on this.

It contrasts with the way some celebs milk a broken nail. Andy is the antithesis of that phoney celeb, emotion overflow, “I’m so blessed” balls.

An actual real, decent man.

Pommes · 11/01/2019 21:57

Another Andy fan here.
Nothing to add.
Just best wishes and sadness.
By far my favourite sporting star.

teawamutu · 11/01/2019 22:23

Oh that pic from today with Judy

If I manage to raise two men like that I'll be SO proud. Flowers to Judy, too.

BettyDuMonde · 11/01/2019 22:38

Sad to hear this.

However, now that he is at a loose end, i’d like to encourage him to get in touch with Martina Navratilova - if anyone will be taken seriously by sporting bodies on the subject of preserving women[s sport it’s these two.

AmIthatbloodycold · 11/01/2019 23:15

Radio Scotland phone in this morning had me in tears. A journalist was on, who had travelled the world following tennis. She said that if her son grew up to be like Andy, then she would be happy. I've stupidly been emotional since last night. It's totally irrational but he's just such a decent, thoughtful person that I really feel for him. Tennis has been his life for the last (at least) 17 years, poor lad.

Notreallyhere2 · 11/01/2019 23:21

I love him. Was a bit teary earlier and I’m not that type of person at all! Dh said that I’ve never really had anyone in sport that I’ve followed and admired so much before so it’s understandable. He’s just great, his humour, his talent, his allyship (that’s probably not a word but you know).

SanFranBear · 11/01/2019 23:39

Nothing beats his 2012 Olympic win, for me.. losing to Federer at Wimbledon but coming back and claiming that Gold a few weeks later was something really very special.

I like that tweet in the article about his casual feminism... perfect; he doesn't have to think before pointing out sexism or inequality, it comes to him so naturally which makes it much more powerful.

A loss to the sport for sure (I cried at my desk this morning) but I believe he will continue to be an inspirational voice for tennis and women.

I love your idea, Betty - they would make a formidable team Smile

OlennasWimple · 12/01/2019 00:03

Feck, I seem to have something in my eye too....

Yes, I will be very pleased to raise a son like Andy. I hope he get given an even bigger platform now, to speak sense and spread quiet but powerful feminism

Iused2BanOptimist · 12/01/2019 00:10

Huge fan, I'm really going to miss him not being part of the action.
I'm worried though if he is going to try to push on for another six months. He's a young man and that hip has to last another sixty years. He needs to put his health first, it could really affect not just his ability to play tennis but his long term mobility.

Side issue Why do so many DM readers have such hate - the comments are appalling. Angry

FayFortune · 12/01/2019 00:21

I like Andy. He's a great guy.

FayFortune · 12/01/2019 00:22

There was a total misinterpretation of his humour I think.

FayFortune · 12/01/2019 00:24

He and Tim Henman were clearly mates but some comments were misinterpreted imo.

boatyardblues · 12/01/2019 00:32

I like Andy’s every day feminism too. If he was my son, I’d be bursting with pride. Whatever comes after the tennis, he strikes me as hard working and level-headed and I’m sure he’ll have further success in other areas. Thanks Andy. Flowers

Judy seems lovely too.

WSPU · 12/01/2019 00:51

Thanks Andy.

Cyborgseadog · 12/01/2019 01:27

He comes across as a really lovely, kind and fair man. It's a shame to see him retire. Andy Murray, I am raising my Wine to you dear chap!

(Andy and I are both the same age, I wish I could retire, wtf am I doing with my life Grin )

TinklyLittleLaugh · 12/01/2019 01:45

Judy should write a book, "How to raise a decent man." I'd buy it.

BlueAndWhiteTunica · 12/01/2019 02:53

Love him

Love him

Love him

I'm so sorry that his playing career is ending before he's ready. But I have no doubt that he'll go on to do great things, whether in the public eye or not.

Summerhillsquare · 12/01/2019 07:53

Another huge fan here. Hours of happiness watching him play. Love his straightforward approach to life. A man who hired a lesbian coach because she was a good coach, who isn't afraid to cry or have the piss taken out of him and who loves his mum too! Would there were more men like him.

Lottapianos · 12/01/2019 08:04

In terms of his support for women, it's so obvious that he genuinely gets it and means it, and doesn't make a big performance out of being woke etc. He doesn't bang on about being a father of daughters either. It's so very rare to come across a man in the public eye who seems to genuinely empathise with woman and is able to leave his ego to one side

Theswaggyotter · 12/01/2019 09:46

Thanks for linking those clips blueandwhite you can see it just comes naturally to him, I’m really going to miss him
