Just that really. He is retiring shortly and women's sport will miss someone who championed it.

He has raised the bar for feminist allyship from somewhere around 'not yet outed as a rapist' to genuine respect and advocacy

teawamutu · 11/01/2019 19:24

I'm gutted for him, a great competitor and decent man.

Tiredismymiddlename85 · 11/01/2019 19:24

Love Andy Murray!!!

Lottapianos · 11/01/2019 19:26

Felt very sad for him, he looks exhausted and heartbroken

powershowerforanhour · 11/01/2019 19:27

Good luck to him whatever he does next.

UnnecessaryFennel · 11/01/2019 19:28

Very sad to hear the news this morning about his retirement. Will never forget watching him win Wimbledon in 2013.

He is definitely one of the good guys, using his platform to challenge lazy stereotypes and sexist bullshit. A quietly funny and marvellously talented man.

'Mon Andy!

ProfessoressWoland · 11/01/2019 19:37

Love him.
Flowers to Judy Murray who has had to put up with so much misogyny during her son's career.

MrsTerryPratcett · 11/01/2019 19:42

I fancy him as well

There is something attractive about a man who walks the walk, rather than leftie, woke, dudebro cookie-seeking.

The dour way he corrects people as well. "Male player" when the interviewer was laughing it off and being an arse. Andy just looks at him, stoney-faced. No attempt to soften the comment. Women are so trained to minimise and make other people feel better. He clearly couldn't give a tiny fuck about the interviewer's discomfort.

MrsTerryPratcett · 11/01/2019 19:44

Lovely...

Ok. Hardarse I may be, but looking at that picture, I may have something in my eye...

Rememory · 11/01/2019 19:49

He's just magic isn't he! I felt so sorry for him this morning, he's a decent young man who deserves success.

userschmoozer · 11/01/2019 19:55

I'm not saying who this is for, I would not want to out them. No names, no pack drill. You know who you are.

Glad so many of you feel as I do. I watched clips of him busting a gut training after his op to get fit. He left no stone unturned. If anyone could have done it he could. It's so sad to hear that he cannot even put his shoes and socks on without pain. How the hell he manages to even get on the court goodness only knows. Looks as if he faces more surgery as well.

Was so sorry to hear about his retirement, such a gentleman & advocate for women very sad day.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 11/01/2019 20:31

That "male player" is one of my favourite putdowns of all time.

And the fact that he corrected John Inverdale (the guy who elsewhere covered himself in glory by this remark about Marion Bartoli: "I just wonder if her dad did say to her when she was 12, 13, 14: 'Listen, you're never going to be a looker, you are never going to be somebody like a Sharapova, you're never going to be 5ft 11, you're never going to be somebody with long legs, so you have to compensate for that...'") when Inverdale was gushing over Murray being the first player to win two Olympic golds - "I think Venus and Serena have won about four each..."

FlamingJuno · 11/01/2019 20:34

I love him too. He's a proper grownup man. So sad that his glory days on court are behind him now, but what a year he had in 2016. We haven't heard the last of him, I'm sure, but i think he lie low for a year or so until that hip is sorted and he decides his next move.
The world needs more Andys, and more ordinary families doing extraordinary things powered by extraordinary women.

DisposableNN · 11/01/2019 20:34

Love him. Had tears watching his press conference. A truly good man.
Loved Billie Jeans tweet!

Helmetbymidnight · 11/01/2019 20:37

V sad for him- but I expect whatever he does next he will excel at.
A thoughtful and passionate man.

His relationship with his mother makes me smile. I heard her on the radio talking about her decision to do strictly dancing:.
‘Jamie was delighted!’
‘And Andy?’
‘Ah, Andy said noo, really? sigh’

littlbrowndog · 11/01/2019 20:42

Andy ☹️😢
The best
So sad for you Andy
You always gave us your best

Very pleased to see this thread. I’ve been a fan of Andy Murray for many years and have been lucky enough to see him play in a few tournaments, even the Australian Open two years ago.

I’ve always got annoyed with people who dismiss him as having no personality or as being dour. He was castigated in the press for a joke that Tim Henman set him up with years ago and after that kept his mouth shut so that nothing he said could be misconstrued.

I’ve been so pleased whenever he’s championed women tennis players and women role models. He seems like a thoroughly normal, decent, down to earth guy. This is a sad day!

littlbrowndog · 11/01/2019 20:43

When He won Wimbledon I couldn’t watch the last set
Then I had to

NotafanofmySIL · 11/01/2019 20:46

He posted this on Facebook earlier. Love him!

Aw bless him. It’s so sad that he’s had to retire. Such an amazing career and a real inspiration to so many - men and women.

MakeItAmazing · 11/01/2019 20:54

I watched him win Olympic gold in silence as dh had gone to sleep but no way was I missing it. I've got an awful feeling I deleted his first Wimbledon win from the tv having had it saved for years Sad.

Just so sad for him but what a star.

Sexnotgender · 11/01/2019 20:56

LOVE Andy Murray.

Crazy talented, hard working and a genuinely nice guy. Being a fellow Scot is a bonus.
