Self id Routine in NHS Womens' Wards

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/01/10/nhs-trans-row-men-get-access-womens-wards-identify-female/

"Despite official guidance intended to eliminate mixed sex wards, none of the NHS trusts in England require a patient to have begun transition for them to be treated as their preferred sex, according to responses to more than 100 Freedom of Information requests.

One trust even advises staff to consult with the transgender patient if a female victim of sexual assault objects to sharing facilities with someone who may be biologically and legally male."

I would have no problem being in a ward with a fully transitioned transwoman. But no way do I want to be overnight with the door shut and a paper curtain between me and a non-transitioned man identifying as a woman.

Jesus Christ Sad

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 10/01/2019 22:56

Its fucking ludicrous

userschmoozer · 10/01/2019 22:58

Some wards are locked, and you have to get a member of staff to buzz you out. Also, many of the meds you are given while on a psychiatric ward have a sedative effect.
Obviously this is all incompatible with safeguarding.

Sexual assault and rape in hospitals is a long term problem thats been well documented. Its one reason why single sex wards were promoted.

An abuse survivor is worth less than a fully functioning man because he feelz like a woman?

Wow. Just, wow.

Angryresister · 10/01/2019 23:07

Not even transitioned men should have acces to vulnerable women.

ProfessoressWoland · 10/01/2019 23:12

Does the article mention that this is how the government intended it? It was always "single-gender" but sold to the public as single-sex wards. See r0wan's links in the other thread.

Purplewithgreenspots · 10/01/2019 23:46

According to the guidance the hospital is quoted as having, despite the EA clearly stating there are occasions where trans rights have to be limited, the right of trans people to self-id is primary.

With legal advice like that, what hope is there? Should women just stay at home if they want privacy from men while ill?

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 11/01/2019 07:45

I know someone who works for the NHS. They received training that made it very clear that if a female patients objects to sharing a ward with a trans woman, that is bigotry and should be treated the same as racism. They even used an example of a very elderly woman in the training and joked about how times have moved on and how people need to get over themselves. So don’t expect any understanding basically. Nice.

PipGoesPop · 11/01/2019 07:48

But this is breaking the law no? FFS

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 11/01/2019 07:53

Not really because the law is poorly worded. It gives service providers, eg the NHS an excuse if they wish to exclude trans women from some services provide it is proportionate. BUT it does not place any requirement to provide single sex services. None at all.

This is where I think the law should be reformed. Much more so than self-ID. In fact self-ID debate becomes unimportant if you give women the legal right to single sex services in certain circumstances.

I know someone who had the same experience. However half the room felt it was wrong and challenged it. Apparently the trainer got quite exasperated by the group!

on Jeremy Vine now

papayasareyum · 11/01/2019 10:45

I’m watching Vine now. Yet again the two male guests sympathise with women and can understand why they don’t want male bodied people on wards and the female guest doesn’t see the problem with having men on women’s wards Hmm

papayasareyum · 11/01/2019 10:46

women doing everything to be nice, accommodating and uncomplaining as per usual
