It's RAPE - huffpost

Is huffpost the only one to use the word rape for this case? It's the first one I've seen and good on them for staying the obvious - I hope other news outlets do the same.

I'm pleasantly surprised the CEO has resigned, at least someone has behaved with some honour.
I'm sure they'll find the rapist who fathered the child, but if there was more than one rapist how can they determine who else raped her? I'm inclined to believe there must have been some collusion, as the former caregiver said, how could they not have noticed she was pregnant?

Purplewithgreenspots · 10/01/2019 13:12

Why are they keeping it open ‘under close supervision’? What does a place have to do to its patients to get closed down?

FWRLurker · 10/01/2019 13:53

Finally, thank you Huffpo. NPR refused to use the word rape or even sexual assault on their coverage yesterday, I was disappointed.

Huffpo is annoyingly woke about gender issues but they got this one right.

FWRLurker · 10/01/2019 13:56

I’m also annoyed at how quickly the coverage changs from “a man raped an unconscious woman” to “how’d the center not notice she was pregnant”?

Obviously the latter is awful - but I think it’s shameful that in coverage that there was a rapist at all is only alluded to before quickly moving on to the failures of the institution.

Asking male staff for DNA is fine, except for the glaring problems: (1) what if it is a former staff member? Will they still be required to give a DNA sample? and (2) What if it wasn't a staff member?

Enigmam · 10/01/2019 17:29

I was quite upset at how it has been turned into a how the body support a pregnancy whilst the woman is in a coma fascination. A woman was violated in the worst way possible, focus on that FFS!

deepwatersolo · 10/01/2019 20:33

And there I was thinking Quentin Tarantino was a sick phantasist. Turns out reality is sicker - at least the comatose woman in Kill Bill was not impregnated by her rapist.

CmdrIvanova · 10/01/2019 22:08

deepwatersolo God help me for remembering this but that was only because her injuries and traumatic birth had left Uma Thurman's character wholly infertile. The character selling her off states this explicity to her rapist. So QT did consider it. Sick.

The tests are necessary for elimination purposes. If no employees have a match they are all cleared and the police can look elsewhere. But I suspect that one of the staff is shitting himself right now.

GrinitchSpinach · 10/01/2019 22:55

I don't know if this was mentioned before here, but the young woman has been confirmed to be an enrolled member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe. Native women and girls are already at such high risk for abuse, rape, and murder. This woman's case is depressing in the extreme.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 10/01/2019 23:00

It could have been a family member or 'friend' visiting, or even a man off the street.

And it's probably been going on a while, to numerous women.

nocoolnamesleft · 11/01/2019 01:51

Grinitch

Yes, I saw that today. Yet another layer of vulnerability. Each time you think it can't get any worse, more comes out.

Indigenous women are treated utterly horribly in the States and Canada. Multiple, generational trauma, compounded by abuse from everywhere. Speaking to some white people they behave as if FN and Indigenous people aren't human. Fucking awful.

SignMeUp · 11/01/2019 02:47

I can't stop raging internally about this. Every layer of atrocity untwists and illuminates what we fight for.

SignMeUp · 11/01/2019 02:49

Question to caregivers: Is there a better term for "vegetative state"?

EatCrisps · 11/01/2019 03:52

There are no words Thanks

How disgusting that we cannot protect our most vulnerable women

GlorianaCervixia · 11/01/2019 04:15

The other issue with asking for DNA is that it will only show the rapist who fathered this child. It’s horrible but I wouldn’t be surprised if their multiple men raping this poor woman.

GladAllOver · 12/01/2019 00:03

It sounds like you are objecting to the DNA testing.

It will catch the man responsible, and if it puts the fear of God in any other guilty men waiting for the results it will at least deter them from trying it with other patients.

GlorianaCervixia · 12/01/2019 05:25

No, not at all. I might have phrased it poorly. They should absolutely do DNA testing.

FlyingOink · 12/01/2019 07:02

I've heard of this in Canada, particularly the rape and sexual abuse of indigenous women. I hadn't heard of it in the US, do you think it might be linked to antipathy towards Mexicans? Mexico has the highest number of indigenous people according to wiki link so perhaps racists are conflating the two?

deepwatersolo · 12/01/2019 07:46

I think there are not even statistics about disappeared native women in the US (contrary to pretty much every other demographic).
The thriller ‚Wind River‘ picks the theme up, recommendable movie imo.
