So was just looking at NUS website to see if there was any news on Jess Bradley (nothing posted yet but their profile is still there) Wanted to see who was the LGBT+ Officer (Women’s Place) and saw it was someone called Eden Ladley. News on the site about a NUS Trans Conference this month so went over to their Twitter and saw that bursaries were available for Transwomen and transpeople of Colour to attend... but no mention of Transmen at all (although I suppose they are obviously entitled to bursaries if they’re not white) Someone has asked whether Transmen are entitled to a bursary but as of 23hrs later there hadn’t been a reply. Is it just a typo do you think?

Oh god is it bad that I really want to go to one of these things and tell them I identify as a transwoman? I'd dress in jeans and a top and no makeup, and just act normally – i.e. not make any effort to act overtly feminine at all and see if they suss me. (just to make it clear, I do look unmistakably female).

The beauty of it is that if they notice I'm not trans, they won't be able to say anything, because a person's self-declared identity is sacrosanct, and anyway, if they admitted that they could tell then it would blow apart their delusion that they all pass perfectly and the only way you can tell a person's sex is by inspecting their genitalia.

As others have said, go for femme presenting non-binary. You could turn up looking like Dita Von Teese and they wouldn't be able to even mutter a complaint. (If they were being consistent, which of course they probably wouldn't be.)

OlennasWimple · 16/01/2019 12:19

"Into men" - a refreshingly straightforward term

I don't know if I want to google "pancuddly" and "homoflexible"...

applestrudels · 16/01/2019 12:28

I love the non-binary idea, as it really shows up the ludicrousness of the whole ideology, but I also really want to know if they'd suss me as a natal female. It would answer the question of whether they are so catastrophically bad at reading people's sex that they actually believe they pass, or whether they are just pretending.

Maybe loads of us should go, all with different "identities" (throw in some not-even-bothering-to-pass transmen too) – they feel entitled to colonise our spaces, so why shouldn't we use their own logic to colonise theirs?

CallMeSirShotsFired · 16/01/2019 12:33

I think (think!) I could pass as a:

Non-binary agender transman femme presenting into men?

Although even I am not sure what blessed pronouns god how I have come to loathe that word it would call for.

ReflectentMonatomism · 16/01/2019 12:42

hat they actually believe they pass

I thought that the original use of "passing" was of black Americans in the era of Jim Crow who had managed to assimilate themselves into white society. So it's a multi-layered piece of appropriation, not least claiming that literal violence like lynching and state-sanctioned segregation enforced with violence is being overcome.

ArcheryAnnie · 16/01/2019 12:55

Isn't Eden the one who tweeted that women who work for reproductive justice, and abortion rights should always be assumed to be transphobic?

Wanker.

MrWriter · 16/01/2019 13:00

Ooh watching with interest for the 2019 edition of "Carry on Transwomen"

I see that whoever apologised on twitter on the 2018 conference used autism as their excuse? sound familiar?

Knicknackpaddyflak · 16/01/2019 13:42

It may mean they are non binary bisexual/lesbians who don't use the word lesbian. Younger women seem to use queer or gay more from what I've seen.

Ooh I wonder why young lesbians have learned never to admit out loud or write down anywhere that they're (shhh) homosexual

Very effective secret lesbian underground now runs in this country.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 16/01/2019 14:47

Actually you know - I am a member of the NUS and whilst all my identity documents do show me as Female, I am actually quite masculine looking and reckon I could pass for a trans woman with good paperwork pretty easily. Am quite tempted...

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/01/2019 15:02

I dare you.

Katvonbatshitmermaid · 16/01/2019 17:13

I double dare you!

applestrudels · 16/01/2019 17:29

Oh go on, please! Just say you got your gender recognition certificate years ago. Document it and report back Grin

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 16/01/2019 17:32

I think you should!

They're certainly effective at being secret, anyway Sad
+1 vote for WorkingItOutAsIGo to attend and record!

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 16/01/2019 17:53

If I was non binary but still acknowledged my biological sex could I be a trans woman?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/01/2019 17:55

I’d tick the lesbian box. I’m not (it would certainly be news to MrFekko) but I just soooooo would.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/01/2019 17:56

Can we bribe @workingitoutasigo? Offer biscuits and flat caps or something?

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 16/01/2019 18:11

Lol! I think today is the closing date and you need to be nominated...and as of course I am not out as trans on campus it would be hard....Wink

drspouse · 16/01/2019 18:41

I really think there's room for some Adult Human Female t-shirts in that bar in the evening.

BettyDuMonde · 16/01/2019 20:18

Can I come as your ‘enabler’ workingitout?

(Do nominators have to come from your own institution? Because if not, I bet we could rustle up some students to do the nominating pretty quick)

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/01/2019 20:29

I can be your safe ‘buddy’.

Like the personage on R4 who needed the Guest editor (the woman who wrote the book about not speaking to white about about race - I forget the title) to sit in on their interview (and speak for them). The guest needed a minder to feel safe because of the nasty R4 feminist massive. Apparently.
