The Pool?

Has anybody seen that The Pool have been called out for not paying their freelancers on twitter?

I struggle with a lot of their content but seems a tad hypocritical on their part. Any thoughts?

I haven’t read The Pool since the emailed me a patronising reply about their TWAW stance. I’ll be checking out the twitter storm now.

poppletop · 09/01/2019 13:47

One of the eds has written a chain of tweets of saying it's not that simple to just pay people and that they're a small business. People are utterly fuming.

Ova
I had no response to my request to unsubscribe due to their stance on TWAW. Have now unsubscribed five times, still getting emails from them.
Falling revenues?

namechangedforanon · 09/01/2019 13:58

^ I'd report them for that alone ;)

poppletop · 09/01/2019 13:59

The media chatter suggests there's been a move to a coworking space rather than their own office and there's a lot of anger over the way they've reported some ongoing court cases recently.

The Editor's Circle subscription option has been suspended as well - I got an email about it this week.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 11/01/2019 14:41

‘It’s not that simple to just pay people’

Hmm

Cheeky fuckers

hackmum · 11/01/2019 14:42

It seems that the Pool is in a lot of financial trouble.

A lot of journalists I know are very angry about the way they're still commissioning freelancers to write article even though it seems unlikely that they're going to be able to pay them.

hackmum · 11/01/2019 14:46

You can see the financials here - they owe quite a lot of money:

GlasgowWorrier · 11/01/2019 14:53

So all the directors bar one have resigned?

Celeriacacaca · 11/01/2019 15:00

I've been trying to unsubscribe for six months now but they still keep emailing me. I'm so annoyed I've reported it to the ICO as their link to their data controller email doesn't work.

poppletop · 11/01/2019 15:01

Yes. In August all directorship was handed some guy who runs this period box company.

They've moved to a coworking space from their latest office (3rd move in a year?) and apparently Lauren laverne has removed her "founding" bit from her twitter bio.

That financial info is from 10 months ago as well, so probably a lot worse since then. Not looking very positive!

2 directors

Lauren Laverne (yes that one)
Simon Hill

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 11/01/2019 15:03

Lauren Laverne is still listed as a director on that link from Hackmum

The Pool?
poppletop · 11/01/2019 15:07

Think that's a filed document from several months ago. Lauren Fisher (I assume her married name) was removed in August.

The Pool?

Ahh, thanks Popple

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 11/01/2019 15:26

I wanted to like the Pool but never got into it. It always felt a bit full of its own self importance.

snoutandab0ut · 11/01/2019 15:39

Freelancers not getting paid on time is all too common in the media, but in most cases the money does turn up eventually. The Pool appears not to have any money to pay those owed, and there is also talk of it being a very toxic environment to work in

poppletop · 11/01/2019 15:46

I read somewhere that some people just gave up trying to get paid. The irony when the published an article in December about freelancing with a big emphasis on chasing invoices-and getting paid. Hmm

DonDraper, I thought exactly the same, actually.

There was just something about it that gets on my tits, but you’ve hit the nail on the head, there.

Daffodil2018 · 17/01/2019 10:41

What’s TWAW?

hackmum · 17/01/2019 10:47

Trans women are women, Daffodil.

Daffodil2018 · 17/01/2019 10:50

Ah I see - thanks hackmum.

ribbonseller · 01/02/2019 08:41

Announced yesterday that they have gone into administration and it doesn't look like it can be saved. Real shame as although some of their content was a little bit Hmm they were trying to do something completely different.

Definitely looks like it was a knock on effect of poor management decisions, then being passed to another company to put money in who then had their own financial fall out and it ended up not receiving the investment and overhaul it needed.

It's been a bit of a horrendous few weeks for digital media as Buzzfeed, Huffpost and a few other outlets have had huge lay offs and financial setbacks. Does make me wonder if the media is just going to end up as a load of people with enough money to do it as a hobby than actual career, profession or business model now.
