Yes, really.

www.startribune.com/jury-s-award-to-transgender-woman-rejected-by-football-team-is-a-minnesota-first/503365442/

"This week, a Dakota County jury found that the team and the league discriminated against Ginther because she is transgender, a violation of the Minnesota Human Rights Act. Ginther was awarded $10,000 for emotional distress and $10,000 in punitive damages.

Ginther, 46, transitioned to being a woman from 2014 through 2015, losing her marriage and many friends in the process. Wanting to rebuild her life in 2016, she searched for a supportive social group to join. She turned to the pages of Lavender, a Minnesota LGBT magazine, and found that the Vixen team seemed to be a welcoming organization. "

"After her transition, Ginther legally changed her name and the gender marker on her birth certificate. What she didn’t know, she said, was that the IWFL had changed its eligibility policy in 2012, requiring players to certify that they are and always have been legally and medically female."

So Ginther was not allowed to play by league rules, but still got compensation against the amateur team.

Also American football is notorious for injuries, it's pretty much the prototypical 'no males for safety reasons' sport.

There's the inevitable 'towering over their female teammates' photo.

Without a caption to that photograph, it's impossible to know which one of those three people Ginther is.

CarolDanvers · 08/01/2019 07:12

Will that team even be able to carry on with having to make that kind of financial outlay? Doubtful.

owlonabike · 08/01/2019 09:18

I don’t understand why the team, rather than the league, had to pay damages.

userschmoozer · 08/01/2019 09:32

It seems obvious to me that contact sports need to consider safety, and that weight or strength differences can be dangerous, so they have categories.
A heavyweight boxer cannot claim discrimination if they are barred form entering featherweight matches, and if they did, no one would consider it fair.

Have any similar cases been brought in the UK? I think the Equality Act is whats preventing this happening here, and that we need to watch out for any attempt to replace it.

The financial award to this selfish creep is especially punitive to the women who play on this team & in this league because as a result of little/no commercial sponsorship, the players actually have to pay to play. Contrary to the thread title, this is not the mega-rich NFL, which is for professional male teams & players, it's the Independent Women's Football League, an amateur organization that operates on a shoestring budget financed by the players. What a sport - taking money out of the pockets (purses?) of women with whom he's supposedly dying to team up & play with. Prick.

Vegilante · 08/01/2019 11:50

owlonabike The team had to pay along with the league the team was in at the time because both are player-financed organizations that operate on a shoestring. This is not only amateur women's sports, it's amateur women's sports with no commercial sponsorship or other outside financial support.

Another version of going after women with baseball bats. Angry

This transwoman has no idea of the meaning of the word 'supportive'

If you click through to the article, the picture is captioned and Ginther is the one in the middle.

ChewyLouie · 08/01/2019 12:18

This transwoman has no understanding of the word woman. At 46 in a dress and asking ‘ does this make me look like a boy?’ A 46 year old biological man in women’s clothing worried about looking like a boy, not a man, a boy!
Ginther states ‘ it’s a terrifying feeling when you see your rights being taken away’ , using the appropriation of their victims feelings tactic there. What right does a man have to muscle in on a women’s only team - I missed the memo that bullying, misogyny and wilful deceit become rights.
This person wants to play in a contact sport with amateur women who are physically weaker and now poorer, having taken away their right to play on a level playing field. Who will the women this person injures be able to sue?

Thanks, Welsh. My tongue was firmly in my cheek when I wrote that post... Grin

welshgendercrit · 08/01/2019 16:26

I had a feeling it might be, DAF but the discrepancy in size wasn't quite on the Hannah Mouncey scale. Wink

This was the decision of a jury. Those of us outside the US bubble can only wonder what can possibly be going on.

“Losing her (sic) marriage and many friends in the process”. Are we supposed to feel sorry for this individual, who is flailing around, hurting everyone in reach while trying to attain the impossible sex fantasy?
