Trans murderer serving life will receive £80k gender reassignment on the NHS
A transgender murderer serving a life sentence has been given the green light for gender reassignment surgery on the NHS.
The £20,000 procedure has been described as a “security nightmare” by prison officers and will see Paris Green escorted from her maximum-security prison in Scotland to a hospital in Brighton.
The 1,000-mile-round-trip from Edinburgh will be followed by the life changing surgery and a two-week recovery period.
The whole process will take place under 24-hour guard and cost the taxpayer tens of thousands of pounds, with a potential extra £60,000 for further surgery if recommended.
The surgery, which is supported by transgender rights campaigners, was given the go-ahead last week and is scheduled to begin within weeks.
Green, 27, was found guilty of murder and jailed for life in 2013 after she tortured, sexually assaulted and beat a man to death with two accomplices.
Since being incarcerated, Green from Glenrothes, Fife, has been removed from a women’s prison for sexually assaulting other inmates.
She began her sentence in Cornton Vale women’s prison in Stirling, but is currently held in a women’s wing at HMP Edinburgh.
She has identified as a woman since 2011 and will become the first prisoner serving in Scotland to undergo the surgery.
However prison officers are unhappy about Green’s operation, branding it “not live saving” and not “vital”.
They have expressed deep concerns over the plans, saying the decision sends the wrong message to victims of serious crime and that they are worried about the transportation of a maximum-security prisoner.
One officer said: “Most of the people I’ve discussed this with think it’s outrageous.
“You can murder someone brutally but while you’re in prison you’re entitled to everything you ask for, no matter the burden you put on a stretched system, because it might breach your human rights to say no.
“What about the rights of the victim and his family? Is anyone thinking of them? Is it not another slap in the face they could do without?”
Another officer added: “This will be a logistical and security nightmare for the prison service and for the health service, and they have more important things to worry about.
“This is not a life-saving operation. It is not vital to keep Green healthy.
“If you’re serving life for murder, I think some things should be outside your reach and this is one of them.”
