I hope they are better qualified to make that claim than the appalling Elizabeth Warren.

Yes a great step forward....

Elizabeth Warren is fantastic, a true campaigner for low-income people and a fair society and dedicated to making her country a better place for everyone. Yeah, she made a slip-up in claiming Native ancestry but I know a lot of Americans with a family legend of a Cherokee ancestor here or there. Hardly the crime of the century compared to the tool that is currently occupying the White House.

And yes, great to see two women from Native communities representing their people in Congress. Very emotional seeing this and sad to think it's taken this long.

Interesting stuff, thanks OP. I found this article for a bit more background about this historic event.

Native women have been standing for election since the early nineties but this is their first sucess, nice they got a double win. Quote from article by one of the winners,
“Seventy years ago, Native Americans right here in New Mexico couldn’t vote,” Haaland told supporters at a rally Tuesday night.

Land of the free hasn't always been as brilliant as it likes to think it is (nor us Diego Garcia anyone?) Last year I read "Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI" by David Grann which is an excellent if disturbing account of power, corruption and greed in early 1920s America.
