Blocked on twitter!

I rarely post on twitter although I do use my real nameon there. It has recently come to my attention though that I have been blocked by several posters tweeting on trans issues - weird, as I don't think I have even liked anything particularly controversial! Am I on a list? Should I not use my real name on twitter? I am a bit taken aback actually as I really seems so bizarre to ban someone who hasn't even said anything.

It's use of 'terfblocker' - even some trans allies are falling foul of it, often by simply liking an innocuous post by someone who is already blocked by the terfblocker.

I mostly tweet on GC issues - but also follow some people in other areas of interest to me. If they were to like any of my relatively innocuous (not GC-related) tweets, they'd be likely to get terfblocked too.

OnceUponAGiraffe · 03/01/2019 21:24

Me too. I’m easily identifiable and have liked a few gender critical posts.

We must be so scary to need to be blocked, us with our “likes”.

Vegilante · 03/01/2019 21:26

I have a Twitter account but have never tweeted, liked a tweet or responded to one. Still, I'm also blocked by many of the TRAs. I can only conclude that the mass-blocking tools the TRAs use operate partially or largely based on whom you follow as well.

birdsdestiny · 03/01/2019 21:27

People checking their lists. Right side of history my arse.

OhHolyJesus · 03/01/2019 21:32

I'm actually considering posting to see if I get blocked. I'm worried it will stand against me for work in the future though. I have never posted a thing GC, I've mostly been criticising sea world from several years ago.

Can I ask what you posted OP? If I just write that a transwoman is a transwoman will I get blocked?

userschmoozer · 03/01/2019 21:36

Being on a block list can't be used against you at work, and that comment is legally correct.
If you are concerned then delete any tweets you are worried about and start another account using a pseudonym like you do here.

Bittermints · 03/01/2019 21:38

Aimee Challenor boasted that the Challenors' terfblocker blocked 50000 accounts. One of the mass blocking tools, not sure which one, blocked a Brownie pack and (I think) a branch of Costa. Utter madness. They are tweeting into an echo chamber and think the general public agree with what they say.

Nothing on trans issues! In fact, nothing controversial at all. I suppose it must be because I follow GC feminists.

I think Jack Monroe is blocked by the Challenor list so... ¯\(ツ)

VickyEadie · 03/01/2019 22:04

Yes, Jack posted very recently her (@MNHQ - not sure about Jack's pronouns these days, but have seen her respond positively to being referred to as her, so...) bemusement about being blocked this week.

ScipioAfricanus · 03/01/2019 22:06

I was blocked before I’d tweeted anything - presumably on the blocking list because I follow GC accounts and/or had liked a GC tweet.

It does prove what a weird world some of them must be living in with no one disagreeing with anything they say.

SirVixofVixHall · 03/01/2019 22:21

I was blocked because of who I follow too. I follow all sorts of people, for varying reasons, many of whom are not GC , but the blocker is all part of the no debate tactic. People can’t challenge what they don’t see.

tubspreciousthings · 04/01/2019 00:03

You're in good company @recently - there used to be a way of checking which block lists you're on, but I can't remember how

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 04/01/2019 00:08

I don’t tweet at all but do follow all the ‘usual suspects’ regarding GC stuff so I’m amazed I don’t appear to be blocked yet... odd.

There is the option for some people using a mass 'terf' blocklist to block people who are simply following a designated number of people already on the list.
This would be automatic and determined by the settings available & then chosen.

R0wantrees · 05/01/2019 08:28

Isn't it Sprout who runs the 'what block lists am I on' bot?

People using it would also be giving up information / data.

autumnboys · 05/01/2019 11:38

I realised In the last week that I’ve been blocked by several people I’ve never interacted with. I’ve never liked or re-tweeted anything GC, mostly because I use my real name on Twitter & I am easy to find at both work & the school where I serve as Governor. So, it did seem to be based on who I follow. It’s a bit sinister really. The TRA dont want us to do or say certain things & now it seems that even thinking about it gets you blocked.

MargueritaPink · 05/01/2019 12:37

I've never tweeted or re-tweeted anything and I'm blocked by someone I've never heard of until I saw a link to their twitter feed on another thread and discovered I'm blocked.

hellandhairnets · 05/01/2019 13:04

I've only been blocked by anyone since commenting on the Rachel McKinnon/Martina stuff so that clearly put me on a list. Oh and got something 'liked' by Kathleen Stock so that could be it too. Certainly I'm blocked by that Dr Jo idiot academic person and have never interacted with her in my life. It really does only seem to be in the last couple of weeks or so.

Stardustinmyeyes · 05/01/2019 13:13

Marguerite Pink, i followed that link too and I'm blocked. Although I followed another link on the same thread and I'm not blocked on that one.
If it's possible to make a mass block on that particular link then maybe that's what has been done.

MargueritaPink · 05/01/2019 13:16

I'm blocked by Rachel McKinnon. Who is "Dr Jo"?

AnyFucker · 05/01/2019 13:19

Welcome to the club. It's not an exclusive one, I am afraid.

recently · 05/01/2019 13:20

Exactly. I actually follow a lot of people I don't normally agree with (including Trump!) as I don't want to live in a bubble. I want to hear differing opinions. It seems that if we even want to hear what GC people say we are deemed dangerous!

OP posts:
R0wantrees · 05/01/2019 13:24

If it's possible to make a mass block on that particular link then maybe that's what has been done.

It will more likely be the settings of the individual twitter accounts, which mass 'terf' block lists they are signed upto and also which settings they have used on the block list itself.

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 05/01/2019 13:28

It’s pathetic. Especially when people who are academics use it. I am blocked by Dr Jo Grady although I have never said anything remotely GC on twitter. She is in her mid-30s and behaves like she is circa 13 on there so no great loss, but she holds an elected union position yet blocks loads of colleagues, some of whom may have voted for her.
Think about it: there are lots of forms of abuse on twitter- homophobia, breathtaking misogyny, racism, classism- I could go on. But the one thing that these dimwits cannot tolerate is gender-critical feminism. They have no mass-blockings of any other type of people. And not just GC feminism, but anyone who ever followed an account that may or may not have said something. It’s staggering.
