New refugee ad campaign with sexualized model in must have life jacket.

I just can't get my head round the lack of judgement. I'm beginning to think all the adults have taken early redundancy and taken common sense with them.

The magazine Glamoria that Amnesty created for this campaign is available online (in dutch):

www.glamoria.nl/

They seem to have changed the online imagery to not use this picture, and google translate shows there is an apology of sorts.

Fallingirl · 18/12/2018 15:34

At least the responses on twitter are heartening. But honestly. Just FFS. How do you even come up with this in the first place?

VickyEadie · 18/12/2018 15:49

All grist to the mill for those of us who knew Amnesty was a deeply dodgy organisation years ago.

MrsTerryPratcett · 18/12/2018 15:55

Cool apology bro, not one mention of the word 'woman'.

starcrossedseahorse · 18/12/2018 16:01

I was speechless when I saw this this morning. Seriously no words for how utterly fucked up this is.

arranbubonicplague · 18/12/2018 16:19

Kayaker here - may I ask why the model in that refugee porn picture is wearing a Regatta 15-30Kg life jacket rather than the one that is appropriate for her height and weight (the 30-50kg given she's so unclothed) and that might actually stand a chance of saving her life (tbh, I doubt refugees are mostly concerned about needing rescue from relatively sheltered water and with rescue close at hand)? You might want an up-specc'd life jacket in rougher or more typically perilous conditions.

It couldn't possibly be the wrong size of jacket just so this woman can pose as if she's wearing something that exposes so much of her midriff? And that can't be cinched in to prevent slippage over your head?

There's nowhere near enough front-loaded flotation blocks to keep her floating in a supported position with her head/face out of the water.

MrsTerryPratcett · 18/12/2018 16:23

Supposedly the too small life jacket was to draw attention to the lack of decent life jackets endangering refugees in the Med, rather than to draw attention to her midriff.

MrsTerryPratcett · 18/12/2018 16:23

I mean that's clearly bullshit but that's their argument.

arranbubonicplague · 18/12/2018 16:29

Supposedly the too small life jacket

As a kayaker who is often taken aback by people's lack of basic water safety I take this opportunity to applaud the massive shift that has taken place in people's knowledge of this stuff even from Summer of this year.

I'm abashed that the huge public education programme behind this passed me by and that I obviously underestimated public awareness of Newtons, PFD, buoyancy aids, life jackets and their various nuances.

Either that, or that's one of the most ignorant lies that could possibly be fronted in this situation...

MrsTerryPratcett · 18/12/2018 16:30

Huh?

WallyTheWasher · 18/12/2018 16:32

Sick. Why hasn’t she got clothes on? I didn’t know you had to be semi/naked to wear a life jacket. It’s cold at sea and it’s winter at the moment durr

arranbubonicplague · 18/12/2018 16:34

Huh? - I meant Amnesty and the magazine who seem to have a much higher opinion of people's ability to spot an inadequate flotation and survival device than I do.

MrsTerryPratcett · 18/12/2018 16:44

I get it! I think the same point could have been made by a fully clothed person struggling to put on a life jacket.

But what do I know?
