Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

A cheerful thread for Christmas! Do you agree that women do have some natural advantages?

Apart from the obvious ability to continue the human race, of course.

I believe that the female sense of smell is pretty unbeatable. I can detect ridiculously faint traces of odours, damp etc. No fear of milk going off in this house. Blindfold, I could tell my children apart by their smell alone, even into adulthood. They smell nice, but different, to me. I think females have good survival skills, and this is one of them.

Anything else we should celebrate?

My massage therapist tells me her female clients as a group have a MUCH higher pain threshold than her male clients. She says the men can generally tolerate about 1/2-1/3 of the massage pressure of her female clients.

CrazyToast · 16/12/2018 15:49

Apparently redheads have a higher pain threshold too. And need more anaesthetic.

BigFarmer · 16/12/2018 15:54

One orgasm after another never has me complaining.

WallyTheWasher · 16/12/2018 16:05

I feel like women have better attention to detail in that they notice eg a bad atmosphere or a dodgy person or get an unspoken vibe from a place or person.
Also my OH can never ever find anything even if it’s somewhere obvious and even if he’s given explicit descriptions it’s so annoying

Needmoresleep · 16/12/2018 16:16

I'm worried. Is carving the turkey a male gender thing? Am I therefore transgender?

Squall · 16/12/2018 16:23

Nah. Anyone can carve a turkey Grin

FaFoutis · 16/12/2018 16:24

Living longer is an obvious one.

ChristmasWrappingTheWaitresses · 16/12/2018 16:26

Better social connections than men leading to a less lonely life I understand.

That was me when I fell pregnant - was told by someone that it was a survival thing to be able to sniff out bad food etc. I could smell stale cooking fat in closed kitchen cupboards from the other side of the house. Downside was I vomited through the whole pregnancy. And the smell of feet nearly knocked me out 🤢 And I still have the most acute sense of smell, currently being tested by a reluctant to wash teen🙄

So that's my super power too💪😁

CarolinePooter · 16/12/2018 16:32

Yes, can be both a blessing and a curse!

Wouldn't they need less anaesthetic if they had a higher threshold for pain?

Drookit · 16/12/2018 16:43

Redheads have a lower pain threshold.

Drookit · 16/12/2018 16:47

Women on the whole don't tend to go bald.
They can wear just about anything they want-skirts, dresses, trousers, trainers, heels.
They can wear make up, or not as it suits them.

Notevenmyrealname · 16/12/2018 16:48

I’m sorry wallythewasher, but I refute both your claims. They may be true for you but I don’t believe they are representative of inherent male / female differences.

I feel like women have better attention to detail in that they notice eg a bad atmosphere or a dodgy person or get an unspoken vibe from a place or person.

I think this is more an introvert / extrovert trait and there is no correlation between men and women in that regard. My DH is better at this sort of stuff than I am.

Also my OH can never ever find anything even if it’s somewhere obvious and even if he’s given explicit descriptions it’s so annoying

This is to do with socialisation and the idea that multitasking is a feminine trait and that home management is a woman’s job. My DH is exactly the same and yet is quite capable of holding down a very responsible project related job where he has to be able to instantly know where something is up to. He can do that but somehow can’t remember which cupboard the glasses and mugs go in - it’s not a lack of ability it’s a lack of willingness to use that same part of the brain for tasks that he doesn’t seem to be as important.

Drookit · 16/12/2018 16:48

Don't women keep warmer? And survive longer in the cold because of it?

Drookit · 16/12/2018 16:50

Agree Notevenmyrealname many of these advantages are actually socially engineered.

Badstyley · 16/12/2018 16:55

Orgasms, that is all.

Squall · 16/12/2018 17:01

Pssibly less for goving birth/ basic procedures, but if you need to be knocked out then more? Querying from a brunette perspective. Apart from the regular biological functions, I can’t think of anything myself. Happy to be alive though and pleased with the body that has survived everything that has brought this about.

BitOutOfPractice · 16/12/2018 17:13

Friends. Generally women have great nurturing supportive friendships that add a tremendous amount their lives. I know some men do too but in general I think friends are something that women do so so much better than men and it makes our lives so much richer

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 16/12/2018 17:16

I have read the redhead thing before. But basically it’s thought that they have a lower threshold not higher and someone with a lower threshold would need more anaesthetic. And I can’t see how you can have a high threshold for childbirth and other procedures but then suddenly need more anaesthetic if you’re being put under. I think the pp got the high/low threshold confused.

MrsTerryPratcett · 16/12/2018 17:40

I read a book about a group of people who survived in open boats. In famine/disaster situations the short, fat women live longest. In your face tall, muscly men. They die first of all.

Squall · 16/12/2018 17:48

[hands up for confusion] I’ve always been dead jealous of women who had friends for life from school. I have one from sixth form. Does that count? Other than that I have lots of temporary friends. Man I suck at bring an adult human female. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Squall · 16/12/2018 17:49

Being

Jackshouse · 16/12/2018 18:35

MrsTerryPratcett there is hope for me yet then.

MrsTerryPratcett · 16/12/2018 18:42

Yes Jacks we just have to find ourselves in open boats, fighting for survival. Or maybe the Zombie Apocalypse. Something to look forward to.
