Some Americans are being denied 'life-saving' health care. It's because they are transgender

Yes, it is another story equating breast cancer with cosmetic surgery.

www.usatoday.com/story/news/2018/12/11/transgender-health-care-patients-advocates-call-improvements/1829307002/

"Grayson Russo desperately needs a surgery similar to a double mastectomy.

Although someone with a breast tumor is able to promptly schedule such a surgery, Russo fought more than three years simply for approval.

That's because Russo experiences gender dysphoria, a discomfort or distress caused by a discrepancy between a person’s gender identity and sex assigned at birth. "

"Russo, 23, of Agoura Hills near Los Angeles, did not get approval for their top surgery until November. A transgender non-binary person, someone who is not male or female, they still have to wait about six months for the procedure. "

I am not sure why non-binary persons should not have breasts, but there you go.

The small but real community of people who want other healthy parts of their body hacked off (body dysmorphia) will struggle to find a surgeon for any price

How bizarre Confused Surely that's like complaining that someone with penile cancer gets surgery much faster than someone wanting bottom surgery?

Badstyley · 11/12/2018 14:09

Selfish transphobic cancer sufferers eh? Won’t anybody think of the nonbinaries?

waxy1 · 11/12/2018 14:12

Madness-related surgery will always attract a bit of controversy.

QuietContraryMary · 11/12/2018 14:18

I'm not sure how these various surgeries are prioritised, e.g.. breast reduction. Perhaps a quicker route to surgery of you claimed non binary status to get your painfully large breasts reduced.

To get a reduction you would need to (presumably copay) for months of different specialists such as orthopedists dermatologists etc www.plasticsurgery.org/news/blog/is-breast-reduction-covered-by-health-insurance

Offensive shite.

Also

A transgender non-binary person, someone who is not male or female

Eh?

Doobigetta · 11/12/2018 22:49

Shouldn’t anyone who is really serious about being non-binary have one breast?

littlecabbage · 11/12/2018 23:08

Sleeplikeasloth · 11/12/2018 23:20

Isn't it a contradiction being non binary and transgender??

HestiaParthenos · 11/12/2018 23:20

Shouldn’t anyone who is really serious about being non-binary have one breast?

No, then they'd look like one of the Amazons of the myths, who allegedly removed one breast to be better able to use a bow and arrow.

And that wouldn't be non-binary at all. Amazons are clearly radfems.

So blue hair it is.

lydiamajora · 12/12/2018 01:26

Maybe we should bring back barber-surgeons - we're already regressing, what's a bit further back?

lydiamajora · 12/12/2018 01:28

You can kill two birds with one stone! A slick, asymmetrical undercut and a double mastectomy, all in one trip.

TinyRick · 12/12/2018 01:42

As someone who is needing a double mastectomy in about 6 months time after chemotherapy....the writer of that article can fuck off.

Fucking infuriating.

InSightMars · 12/12/2018 01:43

Maybe someone should talk to Russo in language they understand: women with breast cancer get priority for mastectomies because without them they can literally die!. And literally in this case means what it used to mean - fucking LITERALLY.

InSightMars · 12/12/2018 01:52

Actually HestiaParthenos I think if Amazons were a thing these days they'd definitely come under the Mermaid trans umbrella and would be on puberty blockers before they could string a bow. Think about it, all that gender non-conforming warrior spirit and aggression and playing with weapons and shit - yep, definitely transmen.

thewitchofwentworth · 12/12/2018 03:18

I recall someone on twitter complaining about something similar with the NHS. They wanted "top surgery" but it was being delayed because women with breast cancer were being prioritised. They also had to throw in a suicide threat as well, claiming that their elective surgery was life saving and that trans men would kill themselves if they didn't get it ahead of women who might actually die from cancer.

I have heard it suggested that there is a link with narcissistic personality disorders.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 12/12/2018 08:03

Oh, cry me a river, Russo. And then fuck off with your speshul snoflake transgender non-binary bullshit.

KindOfAGeek · 12/12/2018 09:11

LOTS of Americans are being denied life-saving health care.

AngryAttackKittens · 12/12/2018 09:51

This is what happens when self centered people with the emotional maturity of toddlers don't understand the difference between "this feeling of discomfort with the way my body looks is like totally killing me, by which I mean it's making me frustrated or unhappy" and "this cancer is actually going to kill me, in a way that cannot be avoided via therapy or antidepressents, if it is not surgically removed".

VickyEadie · 12/12/2018 09:57

Also (and you should sing this to the 'Ode to joy' music): Me, me, me, me, me, me, me....

BettyDuMonde · 12/12/2018 10:44

This person needs to go do some volunteering in a large teaching hospital or a small hospice, get themselves a perspective on what life-saving treatments actually save people from (clue - surgery is only life-saving if you actually have a life-threatening Illness).

Since my daughter got sick in September and I became one of the almost-invisible mole-like parents who live in the children’s hospital I’ve seen stuff I never even imagined.

This doesn’t mean I’m not sympathetic to those with gender dysphoria, it’s clearly very distressing and can lead to/be comorbid with depression - but a) not all trans people have gender dysphoria b) medical transition is not a guaranteed cure for gender dysphoria and c) gender dysphoria is not listed as anyone’s primary cause of death.

‘Life threatening’ is a specific term with a quantifiable meaning, ie - without medical intervention it directly leads to death.
Using the term ‘life saving ‘ in reference to surgery that makes only cosmetic differences to the patient’s body is appropriation and disrespectful to those who actually have life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses.

And if these terms are leveraged inappropriately to obtain costly services (either through insurance or state provision) I personally believe that crosses the boundary from inappropriate into fraudulent.

When one of my DC spent a week in hospital earlier in the year, I had a glimpse of parents living like this. Sending strength to you and yours, Betty Flowers
