Womb transplant - I think we know where this will go don't we?

After claiming our pronouns and our genitals I suspect they'll be after our wombs next.

I hope medical rules prevent it and they only transplant them to women with fertility issues.

Would it even work in a male body?

Just supposing really...

ViragoKnows · 05/12/2018 07:42

They're not having mine!

calpop · 05/12/2018 07:44

I wouldn't worry about it, there's no way this would ever work in a genetically male body. They havent got the abdomen space, for a start.

BlytheSpiritsSpirit · 05/12/2018 07:44

Implant, not transplant.

Also, impossible. Pregnancy is more than just a womb, the woman's entire body works to maintain a healthy pregnancy. Men can't do it.

Luglio · 05/12/2018 07:47

Relax. It takes a whole woman's body to build a baby - not just a womb. A womb transplant in a man's body would be completely pointless. It'd be like tattooing gills on your neck and trying to breathe underwater.

Luglio · 05/12/2018 07:48

And yes - implant, not transplant.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 05/12/2018 07:51

I think it’s about as likely to work as sewing a pair of balls onto a woman and expecting a female body to be able to produce sperm.

HandsOffMyRights · 05/12/2018 07:54

Cherry on Twitter posted an interesting piece on Twitter about the placenta the other day.

It was a reminder that pregnancy is indeed more than a womb.

Floisme · 05/12/2018 07:56

I agree, a woman's body is an entire eco-system. Nevertheless if TRAs get their way, they will bankrupt the NHS trying to do it.

charis · 05/12/2018 07:59

That's quite reassuring. Also aren't women's pelvic bones / cavities differently shaped in order to carry to term?

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 05/12/2018 08:00

Has anyone heard the poem "Megatron ain't shit" by Hollie McNish? Megatron
I always think of it when I hear about womb implants into men. Pregnancy takes a woman's whole body, not just her womb.

Gronky · 05/12/2018 08:02

sewing a pair of balls onto a woman and expecting a female body to be able to produce sperm

Barring immunological reactions, that likely would work. Semen would be another matter and the sperm would be genetically that of the donor. The recipient would also benefit from a reduced risk of osteoporosis.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/12/2018 08:02

Crucially, the woman was able to become pregnant because she had ovaries that made eggs.

Because she was a woman. An adult human female.

Gronky · 05/12/2018 08:08

the woman was able to become pregnant because she had ovaries that made eggs

That allowed her to have a child genetically related to her but fertilisation was still in vitro. The biggest current challenge for successfully carrying a child to term in a womb implanted into an XY body is replicating the extragonadal hormones (both in terms of addition and suppression). Delivery would, naturally, be by c section.

NotANotMan · 05/12/2018 08:10

I imagine quite a few men will try this but the best case scenario will be that they get nasty infections and get really ill. Worst case scenario is that it will kill them. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 05/12/2018 08:19

Any man hoping for this really needs to do biology 101.

Terfing · 05/12/2018 08:22

I am very suspicious of this story. I'm sorry, but I don't think it's true.

ViragoKnows · 05/12/2018 08:28

Nevertheless if TRAs get their way, they will bankrupt the NHS trying to do it.

And the worst bit is the NHS will let them.

ICJump · 05/12/2018 08:31

Terfing yes there’s something not quite right.

Rattinghat · 05/12/2018 08:32

Those with donor cards who disagree with this, would need to change the consents.

Genevieva · 05/12/2018 08:33

The suggestion that there is a plentiful supply of dead young women with bodies health enough for a womb transplant is quite disturbing. Not only does it presuppose that there are a lot of women dying who could donate, but also that those women who do die would want to donate.

Many people have a donor card because they like the idea that if they die they might save or extend someone's life. Womb transplant is a completely different thing and should require explicit consent, but I doubt the donor in Brazil was ever asked to think about their opinion on it.

sashh · 05/12/2018 08:38

Relax. It takes a whole woman's body to build a baby - not just a womb. A womb transplant in a man's body would be completely pointless. It'd be like tattooing gills on your neck and trying to breathe underwater.

And that would stop the TRA's demanding it because...

BarbarianMum · 05/12/2018 08:39

I dont see wombs as different at all - its just another organ. Any woman who wants it could have mine if I die (not that they'd want it, it's a bit old). Dont feel nearly as squeamish about it as I do about my corneas.

It wouldnt work in a man so no worries about it being used as some "brave new trans world" experiment. We'll see babies grown in tanks long before any female to male womb transplants are successful.

hackmum · 05/12/2018 08:39

I imagine quite a few men will try this but the best case scenario will be that they get nasty infections and get really ill.

I don't think they will try it. They like to say they will because it's goady, but they won't want to put their own lives at risk in this way.

ImPreCis · 05/12/2018 08:41

It has been written up in The Lancet, although am I right in thinking they have not been immune to the Trans Fanz epidemic?

It has great potential to help with infertility in Adult Human Females, but listen to the poem linked by IToldYouIWasFreaky, a great reminder of what women’s bodies do to accommodate having a baby, and that’s just the physical stuff.

kaldefotter · 05/12/2018 08:45

I completely agree with Barbarianmum that there will be foetuses grown in incubators before it would become possible for males with womb transplants to be able to carry a foetus without killing it or themselves. And once those incubators exist, there will be no chance of a male getting an embryo implanted.

In any case, in the UK, I believe it's unlawful for an embryo to be implanted in a male.
