How populist are you?

The Guardian, so I should warn you.

Anyway, it’s a quiz to find out how ‘populist’ you are. It’s only a bit of fun rather than ‘scientific’ but I’m still quite relieved to find the person I am most distant from is Donald Trump.

I’m closest to Pablo Iglesias, who I know little about, but fairly close to Bernie Saunders, so not too unhappy.

Anyone else want a go? I’d be interested in just how ‘populist’ we are here.

(NB There’s nothing about transgender politics in the quiz).

Depends how you interpret some of the questions.

‘Populism’ seems to equate with being mistrustful of politicians. That would make Noam Chomsky a populist.

It might be easier to interpret if there were a few more people on the non-populist side. The only person firmly on that side is Angela Merkel. Obama is pretty much on the center and Emmanuel Macron isn’t far off.

The Guardian clearly has a fear of populism but the fact that they think almost everyone but Angela Merkel is a ‘populist’ is telling.

I was relieved to find I was furthest from Trump. I was closest to Obama but quite far left and down of him, i.e left but non-populist. DH annoyingly even more so.

I wonder what transgender questions would have done to my score? I assume Guardian would interpret my responses as rightwing. They had ones concerning LGB rights and I think a Guardian quiz would see T as analogous. They sensibly stayed away from that controversy in the quiz!

I wonder if the demographic questions at the start counted towards the scoring.

If I was 25 and gave the same answers would that make me more or less populist? If I had answered something other than British or chosen Other for my gender would that have made a difference?

If the demographic questions don’t count toward the score why are they there?

AspieAnd Proud - I would expect that those questions are there only to see if answers to this follow the usual pattern, ie younger =lefter, and/or whether there are any differences between the sexes/age groups/country of origin.
