Has anyone else seen this? ‘It’s a man’s problem’: Patrick Stewart and the men fighting to end domestic violence

Guardian link

I thought this was well written and a refreshing perspective.

This is fantastic, men calling other men and acknowledging the problem.

So sad that David Challen has been called a man hater and snowflake for what he's doing

It stood out to me when they said they gave talks and found women were the majority audience and one man only came to ask "but what about the men too?"

It happens everywhere as though women don't acknowledge men have a problem too, whereas we do - we just know our problem is more severe currently rather than that it doesn't happen to them too

Was just coming on to post this. Very good article.

“We need men to speak out,”

Could you ask title to be altered to include this? I find threads sink if not really carefully titled.

Tackytriceratops · 04/12/2018 16:39

Or "it's a mans problem."

ILuvBirdsEye · 04/12/2018 17:02

Now this is whataboutery I like.... Smile

What about the men? What are they doing about this issue of male violence?

ILuvBirdsEye · 04/12/2018 17:05

I really think this will not get solved untill men are onboard - because it's not of our making.

We need to focus on boys and get them signed up before the testosterone gets to them.

JaneR0chester · 04/12/2018 17:29

Tackytriceratops I'll report to ask for a title change, thanks.

Blush I thought about trying to put it on the Chat or AIBU for greater exposure, but daren't...

Patrick Stewart has spoken out about this before - he is a brilliant ally.

DodoPatrol · 04/12/2018 18:01

DH actually asked me yesterday, 'But what am I supposed to do about it?' Might point him here.

indieshuffle · 04/12/2018 18:14

Brilliant and good for them. Men challenging men is so vital.

I saw Patrick Stewart's Who Do You Think You Are some years ago, and it was very moving and insightful. Always knew a man who played Picard like that had to be a goody. So glad he is still speaking up for women, and helping men sort their shit out.

Great to see that the brothers want to do something for other women out of the tragedy, when they could easily turn their backs. Great blokes :)

Jesus Christ the comments below the line on that article. "What about the men? What about men like me? Can we broaden the debate so that we don't have to think about domestic violence? WHAT ABOUT THE MEN?" Sad

But interesting article.

sawdustformypony · 04/12/2018 21:46

DH actually asked me yesterday, 'But what am I supposed to do about it?' Might point him here.

He should challenged any man he knows to be abusive; he should shun any friend he knows to be hitting any woman.

I certainly would do so if I thought any of my friends were like that - there would be no alternative and it would be good riddance.....then again, I'm fussy about those I call my friends and I don't know any that would touch a woman to hurt her.

Maybe listen to Jackson Katz's TED talk? Violence Against Women -- it's a men's issue

www.ted.com/talks/jackson_katz_violence_against_women_it_s_a_men_s_issue/transcript?language=en

And the excellent Patrick Stewart has many talks and interviews about domestic violence on YouTube:

SophoclesTheFox · 04/12/2018 21:59

that’s a really good article, thanks for sharing.

Babieseverywhere · 05/12/2018 07:46

Great to hear men talking that this, let's hope it becomes a proper movement.

ContessaHallelujahSparklehorse · 05/12/2018 09:01

Loving this :)

ChewyLouie · 05/12/2018 09:09

I’m showing this to my husband tonight and yes, we do need to get decent men (of which there are plenty) to fight against misogyny alongside women. Sometimes, I think women who are mindlessly vocal in their trans supportare thinking having men on board will help women in the longer term. The part they miss/ gloss over is that they are actually choosing wolves in sheep’s clothing, who will attempt to eradicate us at any opportunity.
